Bai Tang followed the crowd out of the airport, looking at the bustling vehicles in front of the airport square and the various pedestrians. She couldn't help but sigh, truly the first gateway of Huaxia. After glancing at the crowded taxi stand, Bai Tang turned around; she might as well take the airport express! After all, there was no rush, so it would be better to find a hotel in the city first.
"Bai Tang!" Hearing her name called, Bai Tang stopped and turned around to see Tian Yuan running over, panting, with a tall man in his thirties following behind him. The man had long legs and arms and exuded a strong presence.
"Glad I made it in time," Tian Yuan said, catching his breath and apologizing. "Sorry, I just got back from a mission. Luckily, you haven't left yet."
"Do you want to grab a coffee and rest for a bit?" Bai Tang suggested, noticing that both of them looked exhausted.
"No thanks, the Director is still waiting for us. Let's head to the office first!" Tian Yuan took the two suitcases from Bai Tang's hands, handed one to his companion, and introduced him to Bai Tang. "This is my colleague, Zhu Xu."
"Hello!" Bai Tang smiled and greeted the man.
Zhu Xu nodded slightly and replied with two words, "Hello."
"Zhu Xu is a bit of a closed book; don't mind him," Tian Yuan said as he divided the suitcases with Zhu Xu and led Bai Tang toward the parking station.
"I don't mind; someone like him is reliable!"
"Am I not reliable?" Tian Yuan feigned a look of grievance.
"If you were reliable, you wouldn't have been caught by the target," Zhu Xu jabbed.
Tian Yuan glanced at the "target," Bai Tang, and said to Zhu Xu, "Trust me, even if your skills are better than mine, you'll still be easily discovered by Bai Tang."
Zhu Xu looked deeply at Bai Tang and nodded. "You seem impressive!"
The girl before him appeared no different from an ordinary person on the surface, but in Zhu Xu's eyes, she seemed to blend seamlessly with her natural surroundings, without any flaws. And how could he conquer someone who had no flaws?
“Bai Tang, is your cargo being shipped? Should I find a large truck to pick it up?” Tian Yuan asked tentatively. “I thought you would come over in an Aircraft!”
“I don’t want to get shot down by a missile,” Bai Tang replied. “The cargo is in your hands, no need for a large truck to load it.”
“What?” Tian Yuan and Zhu Xu exclaimed, their eyes wide as they stared at the small box in their hands, which was only about a foot square. “A box this size can hold a car and a Spaceship? You’re not bringing a model, are you?”
Bai Tang rolled her eyes. “You really lack knowledge. With both Hover Cars and Spaceships around, having a space box isn’t surprising, is it?”
It’s surprising indeed! Tian Yuan felt frustrated. Both Hover Cars and Spaceships were things from science fiction; their sudden appearance in this world had already shocked him. Forgive his limited imagination; he couldn’t fathom what other futuristic products might appear around him.
Zhu Xu took another deep look at Bai Tang. Is this girl really not an alien?
Tian Yuan was driving a Passat, which was quite ordinary in the bustling city of Beijing. However, Bai Tang noticed that the car had been modified; the windows were made of tempered bulletproof glass. The car didn’t enter the city but instead took the ring road toward the western mountains. The tall buildings were left behind, and the surroundings became increasingly desolate.
“Your headquarters isn’t in the mountains, is it?” Bai Tang asked, looking out the window.
“It is indeed in the mountains, but it’s not our headquarters,” Tian Yuan said as he flicked the cigarette butt out of the window. “For the two items you have, Nation specifically established a research department. We’re heading there now.”
After about two hours of driving, the car stopped in front of a large iron gate. A sign above the gate read: Environmental Testing Research Institute. Entering through the Main Gate, they found a spacious yard with only a three-story red brick building that looked extremely simple.
“Let’s go!” Tian Yuan parked the car and led Bai Tang into the building.
Bai Tang leisurely followed behind them, her Divine Sense having scanned the entire building already. The building appeared ordinary, but it was loose on the outside and tight on the inside, concealing no fewer than fifty armed guards.
In the lobby, there was a reception desk like that of an ordinary company, and a young woman had been fixated on the three of them since they entered.
“Identities confirmed!” Tian Yuan and Zhu Xu each took out an identity card and handed it to the receptionist. She swiped one of them on a machine on the desk to verify their identities. After confirming, she returned their cards while handing over another card.
"Thank you!" Tian Yuan took the card and handed it to Bai Tang. "This is a temporary pass, only one is valid."
"You can't get in without a pass, right?"
"That's right, the security level here is top-notch."
You also need to swipe the card to use the elevator. Tian Yuan placed the card on the sensor next to the elevator buttons, and another row of buttons immediately appeared. Tian Yuan pressed the button for Level -5.
"If you don't have a pass, this elevator can only operate between Levels -1 and -3," Tian Yuan boasted to Bai Tang, but he didn't treat Bai Tang as an outsider. He was determined to win Bai Tang over.
"Pretty impressive," Bai Tang said without much sincerity. Having browsed through the underground black market of Gait Star, Bai Tang felt that all of this was child's play.
The elevator doors opened, and the two stood at the entrance waiting for Bai Tang and the others.
"Director!" Tian Yuan and Zhu Xu called out to a tall old man. Although he was referred to as an old man, he was only in his fifties and looked more spirited than many men in their thirties.
"This must be Comrade Bai! Hello, hello!" O Haosheng enthusiastically shook Bai Tang's hands. "Truly young and promising! Thank you for your support of our nation's technological development!"
"Comrade Bai?" For the first time, Bai Tang felt that his surname wasn't very good.
"Director Ou, I’d prefer if you could drop the 'Comrade' part."
O Haosheng was taken aback for a moment but soon realized there was an issue with his address. He chuckled and said, "Comrade Bai, Comrade Bai. Let me introduce you; this is Manager Zhao Nan from the research institute."
Zhao Nan was a refined man wearing glasses, around forty-five or fifty years old, smiling as he shook hands with Bai Tang.
"Comrade Bai, I've been looking forward to your arrival!"
"Should be the things I've brought, right?"
Zhao Nan smiled, "Everyone is looking forward to it! By the way, where are the things? Should we send a car to pick them up?"
"No need, I've brought them all." Bai Tang pointed to the boxes in Zhu Xu and Tian Yuan's hands.
"Just these two boxes? You didn't bring models, did you?" Zhao Nan and O Haosheng reacted just like Zhu Tian.
Bai Tang smiled, "Don't underestimate these two boxes; they are spatial boxes. They are only one foot big, but the space inside is equivalent to that of a whole building."
"Spatial boxes?" Zhao Nan and O Haosheng exclaimed in unison.
"Comrade Bai, are you selling this box?" Realizing what it was, Zhao Nan immediately had his eye on the spatial boxes. He definitely wanted to get his hands on both of them. Although he didn't understand much about spatial science, they could study and learn as they went along.
"I'm not selling them." Bai Tang smiled, "I'll give you both boxes!"
"Good comrade!" O Haosheng happily patted Bai Tang on the shoulder. His strength was considerable; if it were an ordinary girl, she would have been knocked down by his slap.
"Let's find a place to take out the two items!" Bai Tang suggested with a smile.
"Yes, yes, yes! I've been wanting to see those treasures for a long time." O Haosheng excitedly agreed, and the other three men also looked eager. As men, Mecha was an irresistible temptation for them.
"We need to find a spacious and confidential place."
"Follow me!" Zhao Nan led everyone onto an electric vehicle and drove deeper inside.
"The underground space is quite large! It wasn't built recently, was it?" Bai Tang looked out the car window at the scenery. Below him was an avenue about twenty meters wide, with rooms on both sides resembling a beehive.
"After being built for three to four years, it has never been used. It was only given to Old Zhao's research institute by the Nation to prevent the leakage of data regarding Hover Cars and Mechas," O Haosheng said.
"Why build such a large underground facility if it won't be used? It must have cost a lot of resources and finances," Bai Tang questioned.
"Wasn't it prepared for the year 01? But now that 01 has passed, nothing major has happened!" O Haosheng scratched his head.
"Does the Nation still believe in the rumors of an 'apocalypse'?" Bai Tang was puzzled.
"It's not exactly a rumor," O Haosheng replied, suppressing a laugh. "Literary scholars have discovered that since the year 01, the Earth has been shifting off its original orbit by a fraction each year. This shift is imperceptible to humans, but it has a huge impact on the Earth's environment. As you've seen, in recent years there have been frequent earthquakes, snow disasters, and tsunamis; all these are caused by changes in the Earth's magnetic field. Not only that, but summers are getting hotter and winters colder. If this continues, we might end up with only summer and winter seasons left, with huge temperature differences between them... The Nation is taking precautions. Every harvest season, the Nation systematically purchases and stores food supplies. Even if an apocalypse does come, the Nation's reserves could support everyone for five to six years..."
Zhao Nan interjected, "A friend of mine is researching soilless cultivation."
"So much has already been done by the Nation without ordinary people knowing!" Bai Tang exclaimed. "Are there many such bases?"
"If such a large project were built in bulk, it would be hard for the public not to notice," O Haosheng replied. "There aren't many of these Underground Bases; there are only six across the country, located in major mountainous cities in the north, south, northwest, and southwest. Each base can accommodate five million people."
"Five million? There are over a billion people in the country! What will happen to most people if there really is an apocalypse?" A sense of anger rose within Bai Tang. The slots for the Underground Bases were limited; only those with power or wealth would be able to enter. If she remained an ordinary citizen without any capabilities, she would be one of those abandoned.
