Chuwen Chong's voice was deep and powerful, suggesting he was a steady person.
"Master Uncle, have the child's parents been found? Have those who harmed him been identified?"
"They have!" Chuwen Chong's voice was filled with anger, clearly furious. "That child is from City D; his father works in the Provincial Capital."
"What about his mother?" Yuan Mingyi instinctively felt there was something wrong with the child's mother.
Chuwen Chong snorted coldly. "The child's injuries were caused by his so-called mother. This woman took advantage of her husband being away to be with another man. Disliking the child for making noise, they both beat him to silence him. This time, they did the same to the child but went too far, leaving him in a state of apparent death. Fearing the consequences, they dumped the child into the deep mountains to bury him. The woman even deliberately reported to the local police that the child had been abducted."
"This shameless woman!" Yuan Mingyi exploded. How could a mother be so cruel? That was her own son, a piece of flesh from her body. She actually abused her son and even killed him for being with another man.
"I want to teach this pair of scoundrels a harsh lesson."
"Don't act rashly yet; I've already asked a friend to handle this case. Later, you will take the child down the mountain to the hospital for an injury assessment. My friend will go to the hospital to pick up the child. Don't worry; with his involvement, this couple will definitely face severe punishment!"
"Severe punishment? A few years? Isn't that too lenient for them?" Yuan Mingyi remained indignant.
"Don't worry; I will ensure they are 'well taken care of'!" Chuwen Chong then asked, "How is the child now?"
"Bai Tang has come; she gave the child a healing pill, and now his injuries have improved significantly."
Chuwen Chong had heard Lin Wenbin mention Bai Tang and was somewhat curious about her, especially after hearing that the pills she concocted had enhanced his nephew's and senior brother's abilities. Chuwen Chong began to consider: if he could befriend Bai Tang, perhaps she could help him make a few similar pills. Although finding medicinal materials was difficult for Bai Tang, as a member of a special national unit, he was confident he could procure good materials.
"I'll return to the sect after I finish my business; at that time, invite Sister Bai to the sect; I would like to meet her."
"Okay, Master Uncle, when do you think you'll be back?"
"During the New Year! I'll return to the sect for the New Year!"
Hearing the busy tone from her phone, Bai Tang regained her focus. After half a minute, Yuan Mingyi walked into the room.
"Bai Tang, Master Chu asked me to take this child to the hospital!"
"I'll go with you."
Since Dongshan Sect only had Yuan Mingyi there, he was about to leave, and Bai Tang naturally couldn't stay behind. She had nothing else to do anyway, so it was better to accompany Yuan Mingyi to the hospital and keep an eye on the subsequent developments. Along the way, Yuan Mingyi recounted Chu Wenchong's words to Bai Tang. Although Bai Tang already knew the content of their conversation, she couldn't reveal that and pretended to listen with curiosity, occasionally expressing outrage and disgust towards the child's mother and her accomplice. This wasn't an act; Bai Tang genuinely felt that these two were worse than animals.
Although the child's injuries had been treated, the remaining scars were still shocking, causing the responsible doctor to glare at Yuan Mingyi and Bai Tang, scolding them for a while. It wasn't until Chu Wenchong's friend arrived with a group of subordinates that the doctor realized he had blamed the wrong people; these two were not the abusers but rather kind-hearted individuals trying to save the child. The doctor quickly apologized to them, and Bai Tang waved her hand, urging Yuan Mingyi to deal with the doctor and Chu Wenchong's friend. She was just there as an observer.
"You must be Yuan, right? I'm your uncle's friend, Chen Ping." Chen Ping was a middle-aged man in his forties with a sharp aura about him, definitely not someone who had been raised in a peaceful environment.
"Hello, Chen..."
"Call me Uncle Chen!"
"Uncle Chen!" Yuan Mingyi readily complied. "Thank you for your help!"
"How could it be a bother? This is our duty; instead, we should thank you for saving this child..."
Bai Tang stepped aside as Yuan Mingyi chatted with Chen Ping about what had happened. One of the young police officers who came with Chen Ping approached him.
"Bai Tang?"
Bai Tang looked at the man in surprise. "Who are you?"
The young police officer smiled. "Don't you remember me? I'm Peng Jun!"
With that reminder, Bai Tang recalled that Peng Jun was her middle school classmate; they had been desk mates for a year. In high school, they both got into the same school but were in different classes. She heard that his college entrance exam scores weren't very high, but due to his good physical condition, he eventually entered a police academy.
“Peng Jun, it's been a long time!” Bai Tang greeted her old classmate with a smile. It had been nearly ten years since she last saw her middle school classmates. During the first year after graduating from middle school, there was a reunion that Bai Tang attended. Six years later, although another reunion was held, Bai Tang had already graduated from university and moved to a southern city, missing the gathering and losing contact with her middle school friends.
“I heard you went south after graduating from university. Are you back for vacation or are you staying for good?” Peng Jun sat down next to Bai Tang. Some of his companions were gathering evidence with the Doctor, while others followed Chen Ping to listen to Yuan Mingyi recount how they discovered the child.
“I’m not leaving anymore.” Bai Tang squeezed her fingers. “My parents are getting older, and I need to stay and take care of them.”
That was her initial thought when she returned to her hometown. Now, however, Bai Dad and Bai Ma were in excellent health, looking as fit as people in their forties despite being in their fifties or sixties.
“Are you still living in the same place?”
“No, I’ve moved to a new home.”
“Where is it? I’ll come visit you when I have time. Are you welcoming guests?” Peng Jun asked jokingly.
“Of course, you’re welcome.” Bai Tang replied with a smile.
“Peng, come here for a moment.” The female police officer called Peng Jun over.
Peng Jun stood up. “Give me your phone number. Once I’m done here, I’ll call you so we can grab a meal together.”
After exchanging numbers, Peng Jun went to assist the female police officer, while Yuan Mingyi and Chen Ping approached.
“Bai Tang, let me introduce you. This is Chen Ping, Uncle Chen.” Yuan Mingyi introduced the two, and only then did Bai Tang realize that Chen Ping was the director of the Public Security Bureau of City D. His position was hard-earned; he was a comrade of Chu Wenchong, who had been injured during an operation and retired from the front lines to become the director of public security in City D. He embodied the phrase "iron-blooded yet tender," being strict with his subordinates and unyielding towards criminals while showing immense kindness towards unfortunate children.
“I’ve already sent someone to apprehend the child’s mother and notify the father, but he won’t be back for three days,” Chen Ping said.
“The child is hurt like this, and he’s only concerned about making money? A father like that is better off not being one!” Yuan Mingyi exclaimed with wide eyes.
Chen Ping patted Yuan Mingyi on the shoulder. “He has no choice; if he doesn’t clarify things before leaving, his company will deduct his pay. This family relies on his salary to survive.”
"Can't they make an exception in this special situation?" Yuan Mingyi expressed dissatisfaction with both the child's father and his company.
"Does the child not have any other relatives?" Bai Tang asked.
"The child's grandparents have already passed away. Although the maternal grandparents are still alive, you must understand that to raise a daughter like that indicates there are inherent issues. It's better not to let them come," Chen Ping replied.
Bai Tang nodded, agreeing with Chen Ping's decision.
Yuan Mingyi also concurred, "Once this child recovers, I will take him to the mountains. After all, his father can't take care of him. I can teach him martial arts so he won't be bullied in the future."
Chen Ping, having learned about the existence of martial arts and sects from Chu Wenchong, chuckled, "You want to take on a disciple at such a young age?"
Yuan Mingyi smiled, "I have already graduated; naturally, I can take on disciples now."
"The child's father won't let you take him away, will he?" Bai Tang poured cold water on Yuan Mingyi's enthusiasm.
"Well..." Yuan Mingyi frowned.
"Our plans are pointless until the child's father arrives. I'll help you!" Chen Ping's words were not meant to comfort Yuan Mingyi; he believed that a man who couldn't properly care for a child while also trying to earn money would likely want someone to help him raise the child.
Bai Tang, feeling bored while running errands, decided to take her leave. Before leaving the hospital, she went to see the child. This poor child had suffered so much; she hoped he could escape his nightmares and have a smooth and prosperous life from now on.
"Master, Aunt!" Upon seeing Bai Tang enter, Ai Wanxi ran over, holding a plate of kiwis above her head. "Kiwis are delicious; eat!"
"You eat it; Aunt won't," Bai Tang said as she patted the child's head. "Did you have fun playing with Grandpa and your brother today?"
"It was fun!" The child exclaimed excitedly, raising his head. "Grandpa took my brother and me on a thrilling ride! It was so exciting! We also rode on a Ferris wheel and looked down from high up; the people below looked so..."
The lively child reminded Bai Tang of the one lying in the hospital room, and she couldn't help but let out a gentle sigh.
"What's wrong? Did something unpleasant happen?" Bai Ma asked with concern as she noticed her daughter's unusual expression.
Bai Tang picked up Child and sat on the sofa. "I met a child today, about the same age as Xi Er, who was almost killed by her biological mother and her mother's partner."
"What happened?" Bai Ma inquired.
Bai Tang recounted the incident, and both Bai Ma and Bai Dad were filled with righteous indignation, starting to curse the woman and her partner.
"Which hospital room is that child in? Your dad and I will go see her!" Bai Ma said, feeling pity for the child and thinking about making a pot of chicken soup to nourish her.
"I'll go to the store later to buy some nutritional supplements," Bai Dad agreed with Bai Ma's decision.
"I want to go too!" Xing Xiaokang raised his hand, wanting to visit the poor child after hearing about his brother's unfortunate experience.
