Yun Kexin pushed Feng Yinxiao away with all her might, crying, "Feng Yinxiao, why don't you scold me a few times? You clearly blame me in your heart, yet you pretend to be unconcerned and comfort me?" The more emotional she became, the more she struck his chest with her hands. "You liar, bad person, I never want to see you again..."
Just as she was about to walk away, Feng Yinxiao reached out his long arm and pulled Yun Kexin into his embrace, refusing to let go no matter how much she twisted and struggled.
"Let go of me, you—"
He suddenly grasped the back of her head, sealing her incessant chatter with his lips as he kissed her forcefully. She raised her hands and randomly hit his shoulders and back until she ran out of strength, then hugged him tightly, unable to cry out loud. Only tears streamed down her cheeks, some mingling with their lips. After a moment, Feng Yinxiao gently released Yun Kexin, noticing her rare tear-streaked face filled him with heartache. He lowered his head and kissed away the tears from her face, cheeks, and the corners of her lips. The salty taste on his tongue made his heart ache even more.
"Yun Kexin, I regret it so much; I shouldn't have let you meet the Emperor," Feng Yinxiao continued to kiss her softly, murmuring, "I hate it; I hate that as a subject I have to obey orders. Fortunately, this time there were no dangers; otherwise, even if I had to risk my life and fortune—"
Yun Kexin quickly pressed her finger against his lips and looked up at him, shaking her head gently. Feng Yinxiao raised an eyebrow with a smile: "Are you not angry anymore?"
Yun Kexin sniffled and carefully examined Feng Yinxiao. His clear and handsome face was calm and composed; the depths of his obsidian-like eyes reflected her pouting and spoiled expression. Suddenly, a faint blush appeared on her face. Unable to withstand his intense gaze, Yun Kexin seemed to be burned and lowered her eyelids.
"I'm angry at myself," she said softly.
"I was asking if Yun Kexin is still angry at herself?" Feng Yinxiao's smile was as elegant as a chrysanthemum.
Yun Kexin was taken aback and quickly looked up again into his teasing eyes. She suddenly felt an impulse to laugh through her tears but held it back seriously and asked, "Feng Yinxiao, answer me honestly: when you learned that I was willing to sacrifice our child to save Fourth Uncle, did you really not blame me at all? Not even for a moment?"
Feng Yinxiao replied firmly: "Yun Kexin, to be honest with you, when I heard that, I also felt guilty."
"Guilty?" Yun Kexin's clear eyes showed confusion. "Why?"
"I thought at that moment," Feng Yinxiao pursed his lips and hesitated before continuing, "as long as Yun Kexin is still here and hasn't left me, then even if we lost the child now, there will still be more in the future." He noticed her eyes were red and beginning to water. "But now thinking about it makes me feel sorry for the child; I don't deserve to be a father."
Yun Kexin couldn't hold back her tears any longer and cried in Feng Yinxiao's arms. Soon after, it turned into gentle sobs: "Feng Yinxiao, you're so foolish."
Feng Yinxiao naturally embraced her, one hand gently stroking Yun Kexin's hair while murmuring softly:
“Yun Kexin, if I didn't have to be the Palace Front Commander, how wonderful it would be to take you far away, as far as we can go.”
“How can that be?” She sighed deeply in his arms. “A man shouldn't hide away like this. I still hope Feng Yinxiao can achieve great things, with a prosperous wife by his side.”
Feng Yinxiao's thin lips curved into a beautiful arc as he horizontally picked up Yun Kexin and walked toward the big bed.
“Feng Yinxiao, don’t do this,” she said, seeing his long fingers skillfully unfastening her clothes, her face flushed with embarrassment. “We can’t right now…”
But he had already squeezed between her legs, using both hands and mouth, entangled in a passionate embrace. His warm palms roamed restlessly over her delicate body, igniting flames all over her. Just when she didn’t know how to respond, Feng Yinxiao had already leaned down to kiss her abdomen tenderly, saying, “Child, I’m sorry.”
Yun Kexin was taken aback: Feng Yinxiao was apologizing to the child that almost didn’t make it! A mix of sweetness and bitterness filled her heart. The coolness of her abdomen trembled slightly from his hot masculine breath, and his heated lips and tongue alternated between gentle touches and fervent kisses, making her breath quicken and sigh repeatedly.
Seeing her slightly twisting body unable to bear it any longer, he ultimately let her go, carefully lying beside her and kissing her flushed cheek. “Yun Kexin, all I hope for now is that the child is born safely, and that our family lives happily together.”
Yun Kexin reached out to caress his face and smiled. “Surviving great difficulties brings blessings. Feng Yinxiao, we will achieve our wishes.”
Feng Yinxiao frowned and explained, “What I mean is not just about today’s events; there are some strange people and matters in the Duke of Yan's Residence that won’t be settled until they are cleared out. I won’t find peace until then.”
She gently smoothed the frown on his broad forehead and still smiled optimistically. “For a Consort, the most dangerous moment has already passed today. Since we’ve made it through safely, there’s nothing left for me to fear or worry about,” Yun Kexin paused for a moment, her eyes filled with laughter. “Because with you as my husband, I fear nothing.”
Feng Yinxiao was moved and kissed her tenderly before pulling her into his embrace. He leaned close to her ear with concern and said, “Yun Kexin, didn’t you promise the Emperor to do three things? Who knows what strange ideas he might have by then? He refuses to make them clear; the Emperor is becoming more and more unpredictable.”
“Feng Yinxiao, just remember that wherever my husband is, the Consort will be there too, through life and death.”
In that moment, Feng Yinxiao felt his vision blur and his heart ripple with emotion. He tightened his hold on her and fell into a secure sleep.
In late September, the Duke of Yan's Residence was bustling with activity. Nursemaids, maids, and servants were busy inside and outside: today was Consort Jun's delivery day. Some were heating water, some were killing chickens, while others waited outside the Delivery Room for instructions; among them was Feng Yinxiao.
He anxiously paced back and forth in front of the room, listening to Yun Kexin's cries from the Delivery Room, his heart breaking as if it were being sliced with a knife, filled with regret that he could not bear this pain for her.
The maid brought him a chair to sit for a while, but he kicked it away in anger, saying, "The lady is suffering inside; how can I sit here calmly? This is outrageous!"
Shan Yue was startled and quickly withdrew the tea she was about to serve. Shanling dismissed the previous maid and approached to comfort him: "Young Lord, I have heard from Mother since childhood that giving birth is a pain every woman must endure. A woman who has never given birth cannot be considered a complete woman."
Though that was true, it was still too painful. Feng Yinxiao had never known that childbirth could be so torturous. Shanling's words were soon drowned out by the cries coming from the Delivery Room. Unable to bear it any longer, Feng Yinxiao stretched his neck and shouted inside, "Granny Zhang, if you can't deliver the baby, get out! If anything happens to my wife, I will take your life!"
An old woman's head poked out from the Delivery Room, looking anxious. "Young Lord, please don't worry. I have delivered countless babies without any issues. This is her first child, so the process is long and painful, but it will be over soon."
Feng Yinxiao only wanted to intimidate Granny Zhang into coming out for clarification to ease his mind. He did not expect her to finish speaking and hurriedly retreat back inside. The intermittent cries of Yun Kexin continued from within, pushing Feng Yinxiao to the brink of collapse.
"Feng Yinxiao, quiet down," Feng Hongrui arrived at some point and saw the usually calm Feng Yinxiao in such a state of agitation. Surprised, he spoke soothingly, "Your jumping around like this will affect the midwife's work."
"Father, if giving birth is such agony for women, I would rather not be a father."
"Nonsense!" Zhuo Min interjected. On one hand, she envied and resented Feng Yinxiao for being so protective of his beloved wife; on the other hand, she found his words absurd. "Continuing the family line is a woman's duty; no woman can escape it. I know you care for Yun Kexin, but this is an important matter and cannot be driven by emotions."
Feng Yinxiao shot Zhuo Min a cold glance, wanting to pull off her facade to see what she was really like inside. Previously forced to call her "Mother," he now even wanted to drop "Concubine." Suddenly realizing that doing so might provoke Zhuo Min's resentment or jealousy was no trivial matter.
Thinking this over, Feng Yinxiao nodded slightly and said stiffly yet respectfully, "Mother is right; I will remember this."
Zhuo Min was not entirely pleased with his cold demeanor but smiled at his compliance.
“Feng Yinxiao understands, as long as he endures this pain, the future will be filled with children and grandchildren.”
Feng Yinxiao did not respond further, only directing his gaze towards the Delivery Room, hoping that someone would come out to report the situation. As time passed, from midday to sunset, the sounds from the Delivery Room grew louder and then suddenly fell silent. Feng Yinxiao felt a chill in his heart; unable to wait any longer, he was about to rush in when an old woman emerged, her face glistening with sweat and excitement. “It’s done, it’s done! A chubby baby boy has been born!”
Feng Yinxiao’s dark eyes brightened, and he let out a long breath, but the question that came out was, “Is my wife okay?”
“Mother and child are safe.” Midwife Granny Zhang said with a smile, as if she had completed a significant task.
“Can I go in and see?” Feng Yinxiao asked, his hands and feet trembling with excitement.
“Of course, the child has been taken to Grandma Gui for washing,” Granny Zhang replied cheerfully. “Young Lord, you can go in shortly.”
Finally, after waiting for the child to be cleaned up and receiving permission to visit, Feng Yinxiao was the first to lift the curtain and enter. However, he did not look at the baby being held by Grandma Gui, but instead went around to sit by Yun Kexin’s bedside, wanting to check on his beloved wife. Seeing her asleep due to exhaustion made his heart ache.
“Granny Zhang, Grandma Gui, my wife won’t have any issues, will she?” Feng Yinxiao asked anxiously, his eyes welling up.
“Young Lord, don’t worry. Your wife just expended too much energy and is weak from fatigue; she will wake up later tonight.”
“That’s good, that’s good,” Feng Yinxiao said without taking his eyes off the person lying on the bed, feeling greatly relieved. He turned without looking back and instructed, “You all have worked hard too; go rest. I’ll stay here with my wife.”
