Feng Yulu noticed something was off and furrowed her brows, patiently saying, "Husband, what's wrong? I just wanted to keep you company..."
Fu Yihang tossed aside the book in his hand, his face tense, and lifted his eyelids to say, "Did you not understand what I said? I don't need anyone to accompany me while I read!"
"What are you doing?" Feng Yulu changed her previously gentle demeanor, smiling sweetly but now angry, "I kindly wanted to keep you company, what's wrong with that—"
"I appreciate your kindness, Madam!" Fu Yihang replied flatly, "But I have told you multiple times, I do not need anyone by my side."
Feng Yulu's face turned pale with anger. At night, he treated her like a treasure in bed but dismissed her like grass during the day. Was Fu Yihang sick or something? It felt like he was a different person at night compared to the daytime. She had sensed his coldness over the past few nights and had been trying to get closer to him. If he were truly tired, she would understand, but his constant attitude made it impossible for her to approach him, which pushed her to her limits.
In truth, Feng Yulu never realized that she was merely one of the tools Fu Yihang used to retaliate against Yun Ran. His "enthusiasm" in bed was just a means to an end and not out of love for his legitimate wife. On the other hand, forcing her to "call out" was also a way for him to humiliate her!
Ever since Zhuo Min was elevated to the position of the Duke's wife in the Yan State and her children enjoyed newfound status and recognition, Feng Yulu had never experienced such neglect. Her anger surged as all the pent-up frustration and grievances from recent days came flooding back. Just as she was about to confront him fiercely, a maid appeared at the door and said:
"Reporting to the Heir Apparent and Consort Heir, the Young Lord of the Yan State Duke's residence and Consort Jun have arrived."
Both Fu Yihang and Feng Yulu were taken aback: they didn't immediately react. After a moment, Fu Yihang slowly stood up.
"Where are they?" His rigid face showed uncertainty mixed with a hint of joy.
"They are in Renhe Residence, Zheng Hall. The prince and princess are receiving them," the maid said. "She asked me to inform the Heir Apparent and Consort Heir that you should go immediately."
"Alright, this Heir Apparent will be there shortly." Fu Yihang returned to his usual demeanor.
"How strange that elder brother and Sister-in-law suddenly came to the palace," Feng Yulu glanced at Fu Yihang with suspicion and sarcasm, "they really are rare guests."
"Enough of that; let's go see them." Fu Yihang ignored Feng Yulu's comment and walked ahead. "It's not every day they come; we shouldn't keep them waiting. There might really be something important."
Fu Yihang and Feng Yulu entered Renhe Residence, Zheng Hall, where Fu Yueze and Wang Ling were smiling and chatting with the couple Feng Yinxiao. Upon seeing the two enter, they smiled and said, "Hang Er, Yulu, look who has arrived!"
Fu Yihang glanced at Yun Kexin, who was sitting in the guest seat on the left side, next to Feng Yinxiao. She looked gentle and pure, like a flower swaying in the wind. His heart couldn't help but flutter, but due to Feng Yinxiao's presence, he quickly shifted his gaze away and took Feng Yulu's hand to walk over to them, smiling lightly, "Elder Brother, Sister-in-law, what brings you here today? It's a rare visit!"
"Greetings to Elder Brother and Sister-in-law," Feng Yulu said with a slight smile.
However, she was pondering the purpose of their visit—she was well aware of the relationship between the two families; it hadn't reached the point of being "intimately close" or "freely visiting each other."
Yun Kexin politely smiled and said, "Ever since I married into Duke of Yan's Residence, I haven't had the chance to visit Uncle and Aunt's home. Also," Yun Kexin paused slightly before calmly continuing, "the wedding of the Heir Apparent and my sister Yulu, as well as my sister Yun Ran entering the residence, we both haven't had the opportunity to visit and congratulate you. It's truly regrettable; we came specifically to pay our respects today."
Fu Yihang's gaze flickered as he glanced at Yun Ran, who quickly lowered her head.
"Yun Kexin, don't say that," Wang Ling said, feeling that there was something odd about Yun Kexin's words but unable to pinpoint what was wrong. She could only smile and probe gently, "After all, we're all married now. There are many people and matters in your in-laws' family that you need to get to know and manage. It's understandable that you can't attend to everything right away. Don't take it to heart." She then turned to Han Wang Yanran with a smile and said, "Prince, isn't that right?"
Fu Yueze nodded calmly and said, "Yes, after the princess enters the royal residence, aside from returning home occasionally, there are indeed few opportunities to visit her family because there are many matters to manage in the royal residence. Similarly, one should empathize with others; how could we not understand your situation?"
Feng Yinxiao smiled lightly and replied for Yun Kexin, "She is truly a rare virtuous king and virtuous princess."
However, Fu Yihang coldly interjected, "Elder Brother, feel free to speak your mind; there's no need for all this circumlocution."
Wang Ling's expression changed slightly as she shot him a glare and said, "Hang Er..."
Feng Yulu looked at Fu Yihang in surprise, wondering if he had noticed something.
Feng Yinxiao calmly smiled and said, "May I have a private conversation with the Heir Apparent?"
Fu Yihang was stunned: he knew that Feng Yinxiao and his wife had come here not just for a casual visit, but there must be a reason behind it. However, he did not expect them to want to talk privately. What did this mean? Was it possible that the incident in the kitchen last time was not over? Were they warning him not to harbor any inappropriate thoughts about Yun Yun Kexin? His face darkened instantly, and he clenched his hands tightly in his sleeves.
"Why not!" Fu Yihang sneered, "But I wonder if it's just my brother or if Sister-in-law is also—"
"Of course," Yun Yun Kexin replied calmly, "Wherever my husband is, Consort will be there too."
What seemed like a casual remark ignited Fu Yihang's jealousy; Feng Yulu could sense the fiery anger radiating from him, as if he were about to burst into flames.
"In that case, please let my brother and Sister-in-law speak in the backyard," Fu Yihang said with a forced smile, quickly regaining his composure. He turned to King Han and the queen, saying, "Father, Mother, my brother and Sister-in-law have traveled a long way; they must have some private matters to discuss with me. I hope you can understand."
Fu Yueze and Wang Ling were displeased; why couldn't they speak openly? Was there something shameful about it? Feng Yulu was also unhappy; since they hadn't mentioned her, did that mean she wasn't even qualified to listen in? With resentment, she glanced at Feng Yinxiao and his wife but saw no sign of tension or fear on their faces. Fu Yihang also didn't take her along, leaving her behind in the Main Hall.
After Feng Yinxiao and Yun Yun Kexin apologized to King Han and the queen, they followed Fu Yihang to the backyard. Once they were far away, Wang Ling called over a maid and a servant to follow them and find out what was going on, so they could report back later. In the pavilion of the backyard of Renhe Residence, Fu Yihang invited Feng Yinxiao and Yun Yun Kexin to sit down and had the maid serve tea and snacks before asking her to leave.
"Brother, there are no outsiders here; feel free to speak," Fu Yihang said expressionlessly as he poured tea for all three of them and took a sip himself.
"Yun Kexin, you," Feng Yinxiao said calmly on the surface but was very alert inside.
"Heir Apparent, I see that Yun Concubine is in the royal residence," Yun Yun Kexin tried to remain calm. "It seems she is not doing well?"
The teacup that Fu Yihang brought to his lips paused as he looked at Yun Yun Kexin in disbelief before suddenly laughing:
"I must have misheard; did Cousin Kexin just ask this question?"
Privately, he still couldn't change or didn't want to change how he addressed her. It was as if he only pretended to act differently in front of others while reverting back to his old self when alone! Feng Yinxiao frowned but seeing Yun Yun Kexin's composed demeanor calmed him down instantly.
"Can't ask?" Yun Kexin replied lightly.
"No, just curious," Fu Yihang shook his head, putting down his teacup, narrowing his eyes as he probed, "Did Yun Ran go to Duke of Yan's Residence to find you?"
Yun Kexin nodded slightly in response. She didn't mention that Fu Yihang suddenly burst into laughter, leaving Feng Yinxiao and Yun Kexin puzzled.
"So your cousin is here to seek justice for Yun Ran?" As he laughed, his expression suddenly changed, looking at Yun Kexin with mockery, "I can imagine countless people coming to Yun Ran's aid, but I never expected you."
"There's nothing to talk about," Yun Kexin cut straight to the point, "It's just that since she came to Duke of Yan's Residence because of me—"
"She should be kicked out!" Fu Yihang nearly dropped his cup, growling, "It's ridiculous that Cousin Kexin would even listen to her complaints! She deserves everything that's happening to her; it's retribution!"
"It seems everything is true," Yun Kexin blinked her eyelashes lightly, murmuring expressionlessly, "Heir Apparent, since you have taken Yun Ran as your consort, even if you don't want to treat her well, why torture her like this?"
"Why should I torture her? Don't you already know?" Fu Yihang's eyes turned red, his nostrils flaring as he struggled to suppress heavy breaths. Thinking that Yun Ran might have relayed her grievances to Yun Kexin, Fu Yihang's heart raced uncontrollably. In a panic, he shifted his gaze to a spot on the stone table, "What did she tell you?"
"Nothing much," Yun Kexin replied coldly. "Fu Shizi, what should be done has already been done. It's not that I want to take Yun Ran's side; it's just that your actions will make her blame everything on me and then come crying to Duke of Yan's Residence. Is that appropriate?"
Fu Yihang answered swiftly and coldly: "I'll have someone break one of her legs and see where she can go gossiping after that!"
Yun Kexin stood up in shock, her face pale as she exclaimed, "Heir Apparent, are you really going to do that?"
Fu Yihang glanced at her and said calmly: "I was joking," pausing for emphasis, "Don't worry; I won't lay a finger on her. I find her disgusting! I won't allow her to bother you anymore."
Only then did Yun Kexin slowly sit back down in her chair and softly say, "Thank you, Heir Apparent."
Fu Yihang glanced at her, and for a moment, he truly wanted to reach out and tightly grasp her delicate hand in his palm... but he quickly averted his gaze.
He heard Yun Kexin say, "Feng Yinxiao, let's go say goodbye to Han Wang and the princess; it's time to take our leave..."
Fu Yihang stood there watching the couple gradually walk away from him, feeling an indescribable pain—she actually left just like that, not even giving him a glance back! What did he do wrong that made her treat him so coldly and disdainfully? He stood there in a daze for a long time before hastily catching up, saying, "Wait, let me see you off."
After leaving Han Wangfu, Feng Yinxiao and Yun Kexin did not immediately take the carriage back to Duke of Yan's Residence. Instead, they let the carriage driver return first; he wanted to take her around for a while.
In the outskirts' forest, as the couple moved through the trees, sunlight filtered through the dense leaves, casting beloved shadows that danced around them.
"Yun Kexin, I have always felt that Fu Shizi is genuinely sincere towards you." Feng Yinxiao hesitated for a moment, his emotions complex as he broke the silence first. "It seems he listens to everything you say."
"And what of genuine feelings?" Yun Kexin replied indifferently. "In the end, it still gets buried in a cup of parting wine."
Feng Yinxiao felt a pang in his heart. "I am conflicted; could there have been some misunderstanding in our past lives—"
"Misunderstanding?!" Yun Kexin suddenly widened her eyes and sneered. "Feng Yinxiao, don't tell me that if you have a misunderstanding with me in the future, you'll also poison me with a cup of wine."
"How could Yun Kexin have such foolish thoughts?" Feng Yinxiao hurriedly pulled Yun Kexin into his embrace. "I was thinking that if there really was a misunderstanding, then once it dissipates, you might leave me..."
