"Fu Family," Yun Yang stood in the center of the hall, thunderously angry, showing no respect to King Han and the Queen. With a fierce expression, he said, "To this day, you still do not know how to repent and continue to speak such words. It is a waste of Xin'er's repeated efforts on your behalf. I am truly disappointed in you!"
Fu Lianyin was taken aback: Yun Kexin spoke well of her? How could that be possible! Wasn't she supposed to hate her to the bone? Why was she acting like a good person... Unintentionally, she caught a glimpse of King Han and the Queen desperately signaling her with their eyes. Suddenly recalling that she had just tried to win back Yun Yang's trust yesterday, Fu Lianyin secretly blamed herself for becoming increasingly impatient. Without further ado, she knelt before Yun Yang and said:
"Master, please forgive me. It was my foolishness; I should not have been so suspicious. Master, Consort retracts her previous words and apologizes to Seventh Young Lady."
Yun Yang stood with his hands behind his back, coldly mocking her, " Fu Family, if I remember correctly, your foolishness has not been just once or twice. Once spilled, water cannot be retrieved; can it?"
"Master, Consort truly regrets it; I am filled with remorse," Fu Lianyin moved a little closer to Yun Yang, covering her face with a handkerchief. "But I know your temper well and thought I would wait until you calmed down before speaking. Who would have thought that today you would leave Consort behind and return to the capital alone? In my desperation, I spoke without thinking... Master, Consort truly knows her mistake."
"Filled with remorse?" Yun Yang glared at Fu Lianyin fiercely and laughed in anger, "Xin'er has been unable to eat or sleep since the beginning; as her mother, have you ever bothered to check on her in her room?! Let’s take a step back—did you even ask the maids or servants in the royal residence about Xin'er’s situation?!" Yun Yang's voice suddenly rose as he paced heavily in the hall. "No! Fu Family, you didn’t even bother to ask me once! My heart is already completely cold; do you understand?"
Fu Lianyin finally realized that she had become complacent due to her family background and had forgotten Yun Yang's temperament. If she had even made an effort to "visit" Yun Kexin during these past two days, things would not have reached this point. It was all due to her own cleverness backfiring; she had been waiting for Yun Kexin to reach her breaking point before coming to apologize and seek forgiveness. However, as things developed, she would ultimately have to compromise with Seventh Young Lady. Just thinking about it made her furious and unwilling—Yun Yang's affection for Yun Kexin far exceeded Fu Lianyin's imagination. Given the situation, if she did not make a compromise now and continued to resist, there was no way she could pass this hurdle with Yun Yang. He might not divorce her but could treat her like a living widow left at her family home.
Fu Lianyin suddenly "came to her senses" and quickly responded, "Master, please calm your anger; allow Consort to say something. Consort admits that I was a bit angry with Xin'er these past two days because I believe a girl should not have such a big temper. To refuse food out of anger while being a guest in the royal residence is unacceptable; it is not her own home in the capital." She paused slightly, secretly observing Yun Yang's reaction from beneath her brows. "This behavior is truly disrespectful; Consort only wanted to teach Seventh Young Lady a lesson but did not expect this child to be so stubborn..."
"A lesson?" This time, Yun Yang was unwilling to listen any longer to Fu Lianyin's smooth talk. Impatiently waving his hand, he retorted, "It has been three days; isn’t your lesson enough? If I hadn’t decided to return to the capital today, would your lesson never stop? Would you just let Seventh Young Lady fend for herself without caring?!" After taking a breath and swallowing hard, he continued his relentless reprimand, "When Xin'er gets angry and refuses food without understanding etiquette, does that mean you bear no responsibility as her mother? If it weren’t for you setting such traps at King Han’s banquet and treating her reputation as if it were nothing, would she have come to this point? She never intended to blame you; she simply cannot understand why her mother treats her this way! Fu Family, where has your heart gone?!"
Yun Yang nearly gritted his teeth as he finished his last sentence before sweeping away angrily. Fu Lianyin was startled and inwardly cursed herself for trying to defend herself with clever words when she should have gone straight to Yun Kexin’s room.
"Master, wait for me," Fu Lianyin got up and rushed out the door. "Consort wants to see Xin'er."
Seeing this scene unfold, King Han sighed and shook his head: What happened to his sister? She used to be quite perceptive and able to weigh pros and cons; when did she become so "blunt"? Just now he had desperately urged her to keep quiet while she kept babbling on—wasn’t that just adding fuel to the fire? Wang Ling couldn't help but chuckle at Fu Lianyin's foolishness; he felt that if this sister-in-law continued like this, she might very well become another Dai Chun Ni. He hoped she would take care of herself.
Fu Lianyin hurriedly walked along while waving at the maidservants coming toward her. She quickly instructed them to bring a bowl of lotus seed and white fungus soup into Seventh Young Lady’s room. The maidservants complied immediately.
Yun Yang walked quickly and soon entered Yun Kexin's boudoir. Seeing his weak daughter made his heart ache.
"Xin'er, get up and eat something okay? Eat something and Father will take you back to the capital."
Yun Kexin smiled faintly at the corners of her lips and softly replied, "Thank you, Father."
Just as she finished speaking, they heard Fu Lianyin's anxious voice breaking through the door—
"Xiner, Xiner, Mother sees you have come, are you feeling better?"
Yun Yang frowned but reluctantly answered on behalf of Yun Kexin, "Come in."
As he spoke, Fu Lianyin had already appeared at the door, stepping in with light steps. The white handkerchief with green grass patterns in her hand swayed as she approached and directly sat down at the edge of the bed.
"Mother, I am unwell and unable to rise to greet you, please forgive me..." Yun Kexin restrained a cold smile as she spoke.
Yun Kexin's level of "weakness" surprised Fu Lianyin. She had thought that being hungry would only mean a lack of strength, but she did not expect her eyes to be sunken, her small face even thinner, pale as if she were dead. Her voice was so faint that it was barely audible; at a glance, she looked like someone on the verge of death, which was alarming. No wonder Yun Yang was eager to take her back to the capital.
"Seventh Young Lady is still angry with Mother," Fu Lianyin said with a faint smile, reaching out to lightly touch Yun Kexin's forehead like a dragonfly touching water before retracting her hand. "I came to apologize to Xiner; I shouldn't have been so focused on trying to match you with Yi Hang without considering your feelings. Mother was wrong."
"Daughter does not dare," Yun Kexin gently shook her head and said earnestly, "I just don't understand why Mother did this. You have always been 'considerate' of me before; what has changed this time?"
"It is Mother's fault for being foolish," Fu Lianyin thought bitterly about how Yun Kexin forced her to apologize again, but her expression remained gentle and kind, filled with regret. "I promise there will not be a next time," she said. "Please get up and eat something; look at your face and hands," Fu Lianyin's voice choked as she pinched her nose with the handkerchief and said, "You have become so thin. Xiner, I had the maid prepare a bowl of lotus seed and white fungus soup for you. Will you get up and eat a little?"
Yun Kexin thought: It is impossible for Fu Lianyin to admit that her true intention in setting the trap was different. Moreover, if she were to act "unresponsive" in such a situation, it would only make Yun Yang sympathize with Fu Lianyin, which would be troublesome. The current plan is to grasp her weakness and make her submit.
"Thank you, Mother," a faint smile appeared on Yun Kexin's lips as she apologized for Fu Lianyin's kindness. "But I really have no appetite; my heart is hurt, my anger has not subsided, and my feelings are hard to recover."
Upon hearing this, Fu Lianyin took a deep breath and instantly turned furious: I came personally to apologize and show my face; what more do you want? How come I've never seen such an attitude before!
"Seventh Young Lady, Mother knows your heart is hurt, but please also consider how much it pains me," Fu Lianyin covered half of her face with the handkerchief and began to sob softly, shaking slightly as she spoke. "You have become so thin; how can Father and I dare take you back to the capital? How will we face your Uncle and Second Uncle when we return to the Duke's residence? They will think that your father and mother did not take good care of you or even believe that your maternal family has mistreated you. What should we do?"
Yes, this point! What Fu Lianyin fears most is bringing back someone who looks half-dead from hunger! Dying in the Han Wang residence would be even worse; there would be no way to silence gossip! Yun Kexin felt a cold thrill reminiscent of competing with Fu Lianyin in her childhood.
"It's alright, Mother. Just now Father mentioned taking me back to the capital; I also want to go back," Yun Kexin blinked lightly and moved her lips slightly. "This place is where Xiner feels sorrowful; I do not wish to stay long. Uncle has excellent medical skills and will help me recover soon; please rest assured."
Fu Lianyin suddenly tightened the handkerchief in her hand, nearly biting it in frustration. She suppressed the growing anger within her and turned to Yun Yang with a smile.
"Sir, Consort wishes to speak privately with Xiner for a moment; it has been a long time since we last talked."
Yun Yang looked at Fu Lianyin with suspicion, his gaze filled with wariness. This made Fu Lianyin both angry and helpless: if only he could close his eyes and quickly strangle Yun Kexin!
“Father, you should go out first,” Yun Kexin noticed Yun Yang's distrust towards Fu Lianyin and felt relieved. She was confident that Fu Lianyin would not dare to act against her in her maternal home. With no fear on her face, she said, “Don’t worry, this is Han Wangfu; Kexin won’t throw a tantrum and upset Mother.”
Yun Yang understood the implication behind Yun Kexin's words, nodded, and said to Fu Lianyin indifferently:
“Then you two can talk; I’ll be outside. Call me if anything happens.”
He walked straight out of the room and closed the door. Fu Lianyin, ignoring her cold heart, pleaded with Yun Kexin:
“Kexin, there are no outsiders here. Mother begs you to forgive me this once. Can you get up and eat? You’ve lost weight, and it pains Mother and Father.”
“Mother, I really miss the Duke's Residence in the capital. I want to go home…” Yun Kexin stubbornly shook her head, like a child throwing a tantrum after feeling wronged.
Fu Lianyin truly had no other options left. She stepped back a few paces and suddenly knelt down with a thud:
“Seventh Young Lady, Mother is kneeling for you; can’t you just agree?” Her voice was filled with suppressed resentment and unwillingness as she squeezed out a sentence through gritted teeth, “Mother is truly wrong…”
