The morning dew had dissipated, and sunlight streamed in! A gentle breeze brushed against the wind chimes by the window, producing a crisp sound. The doorbell rang.
Leaders from the street and community had arrived. The aunties who loved to gossip about family matters were here. The uncles who enjoyed nitpicking were also present. Parents of Haohao's kindergarten classmates had come. The friendly aunt who was usually kind to us was here too. Young people who liked to scroll through Douyin and Kuaishou had also arrived.
Dr. Jiang not only came but also brought along a psychologist, a family intervention therapist, and a behavioral analyst. The room was filled with people. To prevent Haohao from feeling anxious due to the crowd, I did not disturb him as he quietly played on the side, allowing him to remain "blind" to all the visitors. He was immersed in his own world, like a fish in the deep sea, quiet and free.
"Thank you all for attending this gathering organized by our family!" My partner Weicong and I expressed our gratitude with deep bows.
"Dear neighbors, we all live in this community together, and Haohao will continue to live here. We do not wish for our family to bring confusion or discomfort to anyone. As parents, we hope for Haohao to grow up happily. Therefore, today our family sincerely requests your help; we truly need your support."
Before Weicong could finish speaking, everyone had quieted down and was looking at us.
"Some of you may already know about Haohao's situation, while others may not be clear about it yet. Today, I would like to share with you..." My voice flowed gently through the air.
"I have also invited Dr. Jiang today; I would like him to talk about Autism."
Dr. Jiang looked around the room and slowly said:
"Autism is a complex developmental disorder primarily characterized by abnormalities in social interaction, communication abilities, and behavior patterns. Due to a lack of security, they often avoid eye contact. They struggle to establish and maintain friendships with peers; even with a favored companion, they do not know how to engage."
They lack responses to the emotions and feelings of others, not because they are indifferent, but because they do not know how to react or what to do! They have delayed language development, making it difficult for them to initiate or maintain conversations, and they struggle with understanding language. Therefore, sometimes they are not disobedient; they simply do not understand!
They exhibit some stereotypical behaviors, such as repeating certain actions and engaging in activities they are interested in repeatedly, which makes them feel safe. Their sensory integration is often disordered, leading to heightened sensitivity to certain sounds, lights, touches, and environments, which can cause fear or discomfort. However, due to their difficulty in expressing or understanding their emotions, they often display these feelings through behaviors like crying or screaming. Their learning styles may not align with traditional educational methods, which is related to their different cognitive approaches!
They experience difficulties in emotional regulation, with significant mood swings that may lead to sudden outbursts or challenges in calming down. This is something they find hard to control on their own and requires improvement through growth and intervention!
"This is some material I prepared; everyone can take a look!" Weicong timely shared the materials with everyone.
"Haohao is not mentally ill, nor does he have... an intelligence issue; he simply... simply cannot understand our world..."
I had promised myself that I would not cry. But thinking about the injustices and harm Haohao has endured since his symptoms appeared, especially after those video incidents, my tears became uncontrollable, and my voice trailed off.
Weicong walked over and hugged my shoulder, indicating that Haohao had just been watching me. I quickly wiped away my tears!
