We try to maintain normal living habits at home. Every day before going out, we tidy up the house and hide supplies in discreet places, while also putting newly purchased items away in the rooms. During this time, Zhao Gang frequently comes over to visit, intentionally or unintentionally inquiring about our situation. My parents are honest people and have no sense of vigilance, but fortunately, Zhao Gang hasn't managed to extract any useful information.
My wariness towards Zhao Gang has grown stronger. Whenever he comes over, I always find an excuse to leave and avoid engaging with him too much. One day, Zhao Gang came to my house again while I was sitting in the living room drinking tea. He smiled and sat down next to me, offering me a cigarette. I didn't take it, and he lit it for himself, exhaling a puff of smoke.
"Lin Hao, I've noticed you've bought quite a few things recently. Are you planning to open a supermarket?" he asked with a half-smile.
"No, I just suddenly had a strong urge to shop. These things won't go bad sitting at home; I can consume them slowly," I replied dismissively.
"Oh? That's interesting. Is there some hidden reason why someone would want to stockpile food?" Zhao Gang pressed on.
"What hidden reason? It's just a new hobby," I laughed it off.
Zhao Gang stared at me for a while without saying anything further. I felt uneasy under his gaze, as if he was scrutinizing me closely. Although he had begun to suspect my actions, he lacked concrete evidence and could only speculate.
That night, while no one was paying attention, he hid in a corner and accidentally overheard my dad and me discussing the relocation of our supplies. The next day at work, he heard his colleagues talking about strange incidents they had encountered, which made him start plotting. As a corporate executive, Zhao Gang had abundant resources and connections.
He took advantage of this situation and began to operate in secret, hoping to gain an edge in the competition for resources. I found it increasingly difficult to obtain supplies, as many supermarket shelves started to empty. Even when supplies were occasionally delivered, they would be snatched up within a short time.
During the ongoing procurement process, I noticed that the prices of many essential goods began to rise, which was illogical. After all, these basic survival supplies are necessities, and their prices typically do not fluctuate significantly. This made me realize that someone was secretly competing with me, and that this person must have substantial financial power; otherwise, they wouldn't be able to support such large-scale purchases.
The figure of Zhao Gang appeared in my mind. As my neighbor, his recent attention towards my family had been quite unusual. Meanwhile, Zhao Gang was negotiating with suppliers.
"Mr. Zhao, the quantity you want this time is too large; our company can't provide that much stock at the moment," the supplier said with a troubled expression.
"You can give me everything you have," Zhao Gang replied decisively.
"But... that's against the rules," the supplier hesitated.
"Rules?" Zhao Gang scoffed. "Is there a rule about having money and not using it?"
The supplier fell silent; he knew Zhao Gang's background and strength were not something he could afford to offend.
"I'll give you three days to consider it. After that, you won't be able to make this money," Zhao Gang said before turning to leave.
As Zhao Gang stepped out of the supplier's office, he looked up at the sky and silently thought, "Lin Hao, whether it's true or not, I will make you waste your money and see if you can still be so happy!"
