Autumn Wind was originally waiting at the entrance of the café for Liu Jian, but after more than ten minutes, Liu Jian had not appeared.
Autumn Wind forced herself to look into the distance and noticed that the intersection ahead was chaotic, as if a major accident had occurred. Taking a few steps forward, she began to feel anxious; could something really have happened to Liu Jian?
Qiu Mowen naturally noticed Autumn Wind's actions. He followed her a few steps forward and quickly stood in front of her.
Seeing the vehicles congested at the nearby intersection, he muttered, "It seems like something has happened!" Then he turned to look at Autumn Wind.
Wait, where is Autumn Wind? She was not within his line of sight. As he shifted his gaze, he found that Autumn Wind was crouched on the ground, her face pale and lips white. The bag she had been holding was roughly shoved into her arms.
Her physical weakness left her with no strength to hold onto the bag. Her body leaned forward, her hands supporting herself on the ground, and the bag fell with a thud.
Qiu Mowen bent down to help Autumn Wind pick it up. He brushed off the dust from the bag and spoke with a hint of urgency, "Are you okay? Let me take you to the hospital!"
Even though Qiu Mowen's tone was filled with concern, it still sounded light to Autumn Wind. Weakly lifting her head, she couldn't muster any words. She slightly nodded towards the bag, indicating for Qiu Mowen to take out his phone.
Qiu Mowen obediently followed Autumn Wind's instructions. He took out his phone and held it out in front of her.
Autumn Wind propped her eyelids open, lifted her hand from her stomach, and reached for the phone.
Just then, chaos erupted around them as an ambulance with flashing lights rushed past Autumn Wind. She vaguely sensed something; instead of grabbing the phone, her hand brushed against it and instinctively grabbed Qiu Mowen's arm. Using his strength, she struggled to get up from the ground.
Ignoring the pain in her abdomen, Autumn Wind stumbled after the ambulance. This was normally a crowded road, and even though the ambulance was in a hurry, it couldn't go fast; its speed was barely faster than a snail's.
However, after only a few steps following the ambulance, pain forced Autumn Wind to lean against a nearby vehicle. The ambulance indeed stopped at the intersection ahead. One hand pressed against her stomach while the other supported herself on the car as she scanned the area in disarray. She hoped yet dreaded finding a familiar figure. Suddenly, her gaze fell upon a black car that had been wrecked beyond recognition.
In an instant, everything went dark; this was what Autumn Wind least wanted to face—the car involved in the accident was indeed Liu Jian's!
With disheveled hair, Autumn Wind dashed into the middle of the road. The entire world began to spin around her; it felt as if ten thousand war drums were pounding in her ears—she could hear nothing but a deafening roar.
Just as she took two steps forward, suddenly a child's cry pierced through like a knife into Autumn Wind's eardrum, causing all other sounds to vanish instantly.
The source of the crying was Phoebe.
A few steps away, Qiu Feng was crouched on the ground, holding the crying Phoebe. Autumn Wind wanted to step forward, but her feet felt as heavy as lead and wouldn’t move. She hurriedly scanned her surroundings, but was suddenly struck by a flash of lightning. In the ambulance that had just arrived, Autumn Wind spotted Liu Jian; his white shirt was already stained red with blood. Blood trickled from his temples to his mouth.
Autumn Wind wanted to call out Liu Jian's name, but her throat felt as if it were clogged with sand. No sound came out. At that moment, she noticed Qiu Mowen standing beside her again. She wanted to turn around and ask Qiu Mowen to help Liu Jian, but her body wouldn’t obey; she couldn’t do anything.
Suddenly, Autumn Wind's legs went weak again, and her eyes filled with an unknown liquid—tears? Or perhaps sweat? In her dazed vision, she suddenly saw Liu Jian smiling at her, his smile so radiant that it shattered Autumn Wind's heart. But the ambulance doors finally closed, and it sped away with a whoosh.
Her eyes could no longer bear the weight of the liquid; tears streamed down uncontrollably. Her body suddenly broke free from its restraints and began to surge forward, while everything around her fell silent, all sounds becoming ethereal.
Standing behind Autumn Wind, Qiu Mowen grasped her tightly as she tried to rush forward. Autumn Wind glanced back at Qiu Mowen, her eyes reflecting helplessness and pain. But after a few seconds of meeting his gaze, that expression suddenly turned into one of sorrow.
Suddenly, a “click” sound echoed around them. Autumn Wind looked around and saw a reporter not far away taking pictures with a camera. She recognized that reporter and wanted to think about something else, but the world around her dimmed again.
Autumn Wind's entire body began to lean back until she lay in Qiu Mowen's arms. Whether it was due to exhaustion or pain, she didn’t struggle and pressed against his solid chest.
In that moment, Autumn Wind could hear his heartbeat, like being pressed against a vast and deep valley. The sadness within her gradually began to resonate with the rhythm of his heartbeat.
But soon she thought of Liu Jian, covered in blood, and her heart became chaotic once more.
She slightly lifted her gaze and felt her throat tremble; she wanted to say something, but before any sound could escape her lips, she completely lost consciousness.
When Autumn Wind woke up, it was already afternoon. She opened her eyes and found herself lying in a stark white hospital room.
The sunlight streamed in brilliantly through the window. The phone that should have been in Qiu Mowen's hands lay quietly beside her pillow. In front of her stood a worried-looking Liu Jian, his head wrapped in bandages. Upon seeing Autumn Wind awake, he smiled like a child.
Seeing Liu Jian smile so brightly made Autumn Wind relax completely. She reached out gently to touch the bandage around his head and asked, “Does it hurt?”
Liu Jian seemed to want to shake his head, but perhaps the injury prevented him from doing so; instead, he softly replied, “It doesn’t hurt…” Then he turned slightly and pointed towards the door.
Autumn Wind lifted her head slightly and followed Liu Jian’s finger with her gaze; surprisingly, Qiu Mowen was standing at the door of the room.
Just moments ago, she had been lying in Qiu Mowen’s embrace and had seemingly been photographed by a reporter… The scene before she fainted suddenly flashed through Autumn Wind’s mind, and her previously relaxed heart was instantly replaced by anxiety and tension.
Autumn Wind had her mouth slightly open, her entire body completely stiff. Her eyes immediately drooped, and she began to feel drowsy. Seeing Autumn Wind like this, Liu Jian mistakenly thought she was frightened and said, "Don't worry, the doctor is fine..."
As Liu Jian spoke, Qiu Mowen's phone rang at the door, startling both Autumn Wind and Liu Jian. They both instinctively looked toward the door and saw Qiu Mowen whispering a few words into the receiver. When he hung up and raised his head, his expression had changed. He rubbed his forehead as if deep in thought.
Then he turned around and waved at Liu Jian.
To this, Liu Jian immediately displayed a humble demeanor and obediently walked toward the door. Qiu Mowen whispered a few words to Liu Jian, whose expression changed as well.
Next, Liu Jian walked toward Autumn Wind, while Qiu Mowen turned and headed for the stairs.
"Darling, the doctor is fine; let's leave quickly, shall we..." Liu Jian hurriedly said as he rushed to Autumn Wind's bedside.
Autumn Wind looked at Liu Jian in confusion, her mind filled with countless questions. Despite her many doubts, she nodded obediently and got out of bed.
Liu Jian was about to bend down to help her tie her shoelaces but was stopped by Autumn Wind. "No, I'll do it myself..."
Autumn Wind bent down herself, put on her shoes, and after confirming everything was in order, followed Liu Jian out of the ward. She actually wanted to go forward and support Liu Jian, who was wrapped in bandages, but he seemed deliberately to keep a certain distance from her.
Moreover, instead of leading Autumn Wind toward the nearest staircase, Liu Jian took a winding path to a staff-only elevator.
This elevator had a dedicated attendant who seemed to recognize Liu Jian. Upon seeing them arrive, he opened the elevator door without hesitation.
As the elevator descended slowly, Autumn Wind's questions grew more pressing. The strange scene of Liu Jian's conversation with Qiu Mowen gradually resurfaced in her mind. She leaned closer to Liu Jian, wrapping her arm around his sturdy arm. "You just talked with Ervin..."
Before she could finish, Liu Jian interrupted, "Wow, this elevator is pretty fast; we're already at the underground parking lot..."
Upon hearing this, Autumn Wind immediately understood that Liu Jian was intentionally cutting off her question; in other words, he did not want her to inquire about anything related to Qiu Mowen.
"Yeah, it is quite fast..." Autumn Wind replied dismissively as she turned her face toward the elevator doors. With a "ding," the doors opened.
As she stepped out of the elevator quickly, she was firmly pulled back by Liu Jian.
Liu Jian cautiously poked his head out of the elevator, looking left and right. After confirming that nothing was amiss, he quickly pulled Autumn Wind along toward the car.
Due to Liu Jian's strange behavior, Autumn Wind also looked around but found nothing unusual. She hurried after him, and a few seconds later, they reached the car. Liu Jian, ever the gentleman, opened the door for Autumn Wind. Once she was seated and buckled in, he walked to the driver's seat and quickly started the engine.
The car soon left the underground parking lot. As they passed the main entrance of the hospital, Autumn Wind noticed some people with various photography equipment excitedly surrounding a vehicle.
Autumn Wind pressed down the window, trying to get a better look, but as soon as she cracked it open, Liu Jian pressed it back up again. Autumn Wind turned to look at Liu Jian.
Liu Jian's lips twitched slightly as he said in a low voice, "I plan to turn on the air conditioning; let's not open the window for now!"
However, Autumn Wind didn't believe him at all. She pressed her head against the window to see what was happening around the car.
Inside the vehicle, shadows moved, and Autumn Wind vaguely saw Qiu Mowen's figure.
She silently withdrew her gaze and looked back at Liu Jian. His face was filled with anxiety, and when Autumn Wind looked at him, he didn't dare meet her eyes.
Autumn Wind was certain that Liu Jian was hiding something from her or that he knew something related to Qiu Mowen.
But a voice in her head warned her: do not act rashly until Liu Jian voluntarily breaks the silence.
