After coming out of the washroom, Autumn Wind went straight back to her room to change clothes. Her clothes were all soaked, which would definitely raise Qiu Ruolan's suspicions.
Looking at the wardrobe for a moment, Autumn Wind felt a bit overwhelmed. The wardrobe was filled with new clothes that Qiu Ruolan had prepared for her. She slapped her forehead and remembered that her own clothes were in her suitcase, but it seemed like something was still missing. What could it be?
Autumn Wind crossed her arms and thought carefully, but she couldn't recall what exactly was missing. The sound of Qiu Ruolan calling for dinner came again, and in a panic, Autumn Wind randomly chose a pink outfit.
After quickly changing, she looked at herself in the mirror and felt like something was still lacking. She pondered for a while and then slightly loosened two buttons at the front before walking out of the room.
Qiu Ruolan was taken aback by Autumn Wind suddenly wearing the clothes she had bought for her. She immediately changed her usual rhythm, saying, "Autumn Wind, sit on my left... Come on, Ervin, you sit too, sit on my left... Hey, Qiu Ervin, I told you to sit here; why are you sitting on my left instead? You sit there, and Autumn Wind sits here."
Qiu Mowen had just finished bathing and changed into a clean suit. His tie was still neatly tied as if he were attending an important meeting. He raised his eyebrows slightly, shrugged helplessly, and sat down on Qiu Ruolan's right.
Thousands of colorful lights lit up along the road; looking out from the window, every building outside was wrapped in vibrant lights. The three of them finally sat together to start their so-called New Year's Eve dinner.
The atmosphere was so warm that all their previous indifference and gaps seemed to disappear. Everything felt as peaceful and happy as if Grandma were still alive.
After dinner, Qiu Mowen consciously began to clear the dishes. Autumn Wind and Qiu Ruolan took on a queenly demeanor and immediately moved from the dining table to the sofa, deliberately avoiding each other's gaze while staring blankly at the dark screen of the TV without saying a word.
At that moment, Qiu Mowen had already washed the dishes and appeared in the living room. He rolled up his shirt sleeves to reveal his strong arms, chuckled a few times, then went to the bathroom to wash his hands. After drying them off, he lowered his sleeves and said, "Hey, are you watching TV? It seems like it's not on!" He reached out to turn on the TV.
"Let's have some wine to celebrate our reunion!" Qiu Mowen then walked over to the wine cabinet and immediately picked up the bottle of wine that Qiu Ruolan had treasured for years. He cautiously poured it into glasses for both women.
At this time, Autumn Wind and Qiu Ruolan were curled up at opposite ends of the sofa. Qiu Ruolan rested her arm on her knees while occasionally glancing sideways at Autumn Wind. The sounds of laughter and music related to the holiday from the TV filled the room with a cozy atmosphere. From outside the window, they looked no different from countless ordinary families in Taipei.
But this sense of comfort was soon shattered.
Autumn Wind let her hair fall over the sofa and reached for the wine that Qiu Mowen had poured, shaking it continuously. Outside the window, the distant and ethereal cheers of young people occasionally drifted in, evoking memories of her past with Qiu Ruolan.
Autumn Wind had to admit that during these days, she had been missing her. Although she was unwilling to acknowledge it, Qiu Ruolan had gradually seeped into every part of her being. It was a misplaced feeling; her emotions towards Qiu Ruolan were akin to a mother's feelings for her disappointing daughter. Autumn Wind could humiliate, scold, or mock her, but only she was allowed to do so.
Yet she was acutely aware that Qiu Ruolan's work constantly faced external scrutiny and ridicule. Autumn Wind dreaded seeing any negative news related to her and was perpetually worried that her own mistakes would implicate Qiu Ruolan.
Autumn Wind feared that Qiu Ruolan would be mocked and looked down upon. Every time news about her broke, it was the most nerve-wracking moment for Autumn Wind.
She had long forgotten when exactly things changed or what specific events occurred. The attitudes of both parties felt abstract, like two close friends who once shared everything but gradually drifted apart when one started dating someone else. There were no arguments or misunderstandings; it simply happened because one person's affections shifted focus.
Qiu Ruolan's "boyfriend" was her career.
However, what truly troubled Autumn Wind was not Qiu Ruolan's busyness but the disappointment of having once promised to always take care of her yet failing to do so. Autumn Wind understood deep down that no matter how much they stirred things up or how icy their relationship became, there would always be a chance for reconciliation.
What truly prevented Autumn Wind from mending things with her was the wild growth within her heart, an overwhelming presence that threatened to suffocate her—Qiu Mowen.
It seemed that Qiu Ruolan sensed Autumn Wind's thoughts. She propped herself up, her eyes still enchanting as she smiled and picked up a grape, gently placing it in her mouth. Her lips were crystal clear and moist, reminiscent of a sultry model in a television commercial: "Have you had any romantic encounters in the mainland, Autumn Wind?" Her voice was soft and lazy, exuding a magnetic charm.
Autumn Wind sat up, deliberately scanning Qiu Mowen with an air of nonchalance as she replied casually, "Do you hope I have romantic encounters…"
Before Autumn Wind could finish her sentence, Qiu Mowen interrupted in a hurried tone, "Do you really want Autumn Wind to have romantic encounters?" His gaze revealed complex and contradictory emotions—somewhat flustered yet terrified, a bit lost but also showing a hint of boldness. His brows furrowed deeply, instantly reflecting all the emotions that Autumn Wind had hoped for.
Qiu Ruolan completely turned her body towards Autumn Wind, her eyes radiating infinite tenderness. With a half-smile, she looked at Autumn Wind and said, "When did you two become so close?" Her gaze dropped again, as if she could see through what Autumn Wind was thinking.
Autumn Wind turned his head to the side, avoiding the topic.
Qiu Mowen let out an exaggerated laugh beside Autumn Wind, his hand awkwardly resting on Autumn Wind's shoulder. Autumn Wind took a deep breath and noticed that he had the same tense expression he was trying to suppress. Autumn Wind guessed that he was just as worried as he was about Qiu Ruolan finding out about their situation.
His throat moved slightly as he tugged at his tie. He gently touched his nose, and his face finally relaxed. "Why don't you ask me if I've had any romantic encounters?"
Qiu Ruolan chuckled softly. She tucked her hair back, pushing the bangs that had fallen over her eyes behind her ear. Under the warm yellow light, her face began to exude a charm that was irresistibly alluring for a mature woman. Autumn Wind looked at Qiu Ruolan with a clear conscience, and she revealed her white teeth, smiling lightly: "You? Do I need to ask? Every time you go to the mainland, don't you have a whole bunch of beautiful friends?" She then turned her face towards Autumn Wind. "Did you not meet several aunts this time?"
Autumn Wind was unsure whether Qiu Ruolan was joking or had seen through his thoughts. He vaguely felt that if he continued to let Qiu Mowen act recklessly, some things would no longer be hidden.
Autumn Wind swallowed hard, his gaze flickering as he dared not look directly at Qiu Ruolan. He shifted his position to face Qiu Mowen completely and spoke again, as if joking yet serious: "Ervin, about that thing we talked about last time, have you thought it over?"
"What thing?" Qiu Mowen frowned but suddenly relaxed his expression. "Are you talking about Lily? I haven't contacted her; what's up?"
"What's wrong? Hey, I think you're not using your brain!" Qiu Ruolan glanced at Autumn Wind with an expression that suggested she wanted to say something but hesitated. Lowering her voice, she said, "Didn't I tell you to pick the right time to ask? You wouldn't really leave me hanging on this too, would you?"
