Lian Cheng Xue described, a tear rolling down the corner of his eye: "I am so useless, I couldn't protect my parents, and I couldn't save my sister. If I hadn't shown up, my sister wouldn't have died. It's all my fault!"
"Dammit!" Li Yunyang slammed his fist on the table, causing the tea in the cup to spill everywhere: "These arrogant beasts, I will make sure to grind them to dust!"
"It definitely wasn't just one or two people," Xiang Xueer expressed her doubts: "If it was revenge, I think slaughtering the village would be normal, but they didn't kill these Exorcist on the spot and instead took them away. I find that very strange. Are they planning to take them back and torture them slowly?"
"Demons shouldn't have such interests!" Li Yunyang directly dismissed this idea: "What I'm most worried about is not this. If these monsters are still unsatisfied and start slaughtering nearby villagers, what will we do?"
Lan Ran Qingtian couldn't help but furrow his brow: "Brother Li is right. I have a bad feeling; I feel like these monsters must have some ulterior motive for capturing the Exorcist!"
"Lian Xiong, do you have any clues? About these monsters or which demons your village's Exorcist has enmity with?" Qingtian asked Lian Cheng Xue, who was lying on the bed.
After listening, he shook his head, seeming reluctant to speak. Having just experienced the loss of family, that pain seemed to cut deeper than losing a limb. Coupled with his own helplessness, Xiang Xueer seemed to understand his suffering.
"We have no choice; let's go out and investigate!" Li Yunyang exchanged glances with Qingtian, then picked up the Azure Dragon Sword and left: "You take care of Lian Xiong, we will be back soon!"
Xiang Xueer nodded and went to the kitchen to bring a bowl of porridge. However, when she came out, she found that Lian Cheng Xue was missing. She hurried over to check; the bed was empty, and the door was open.
"Oh no!" She quickly set down the porridge and rushed outside, finally finding him on the village street, struggling against intense pain. He was unsteadily holding an axe he had picked up from beside the stove in the yard, moving forward.
"This idiot!" Xiang Xueer quickly caught up and blocked his path: "Where do you think you're going with that body?"
"Get out of my way!" Lian Cheng Xue's face was pale as a ghost, beads of sweat dripped down his cheeks like rain. The freshly bandaged wound had blood seeping through the white bandage; one could imagine it must be excruciatingly painful.
Xiang Xueer stared at his twitching face and impulsive, angry expression, and calmly said, "Lian Cheng Xue, I am your doctor. Your life is in my hands, and I have promised Lan Ran Qingtian to take good care of you... If you want to get past me, then you will have to take me down first!"
"What did you say?" Lian Cheng Xue looked at the frail Xiang Xueer in front of him. Her delicate body seemed like a gust of wind could blow her away, yet her determined eyes shone with a different light.
He trembled as he steadied himself, slowly raising the axe in his hand, pointing it directly at Xiang Xueer. "If that's the case, then I won't hold back!"
After he finished speaking, he swung the axe, but due to his severe injuries, even a slight exertion caused excruciating pain that made him kneel on the ground.
With a 'thud,' the axe fell to the ground. Xiang Xueer didn't even move her feet, and Lian Cheng Xue had already collapsed onto the ground from exhaustion. He gritted his teeth against the pain and still tried to stand up, but after many attempts, he found that his excessive blood loss and battered body couldn't endure such strain.
After a wave of dizziness hit him, Lian Cheng Xue pounded his fist on the ground in frustration. "Why? Why is this happening? Why am I so useless? I watched my family get killed without the power to save them!"
Xiang Xueer was not unfamiliar with this scene; when that child named Xiaocui died, she too felt utterly powerless, as if she were as insignificant as an ant.
"Have you never heard the saying? A gentleman takes revenge; ten years is not too late. Heal your body and hone your skills—wouldn't that be better?" She slowly reached out to help Lian Cheng Xue, who was slumped on the ground. "You can't even stand up properly and still want to seek revenge. I believe your sister and parents wouldn't want to see you die so worthless!"
Xiang Xueer's eyes turned left toward the graves; that patch of tombs was where the entire village and his family were buried. Lian Cheng Xue turned to look at the hastily buried people of Exorcism Village and slowly walked toward them.
A bitter tear rolled down his cheek as he stood before the graves of all the townspeople and vowed, "I, Lian Cheng Xue, will personally avenge my enemies and seek revenge for everyone. Father, Mother, Sister, please bless me from above."
Xiang Xueer sighed deeply; it felt like a nightmare from which one could not awaken. Just moments ago, they had been living happily with family; suddenly, all family members, friends, and neighbors were gone. Who could bear such loneliness and pain?
"Let's go!" Xiang Xueer felt a sense of shared sorrow with him. She gently took his arm and helped him back inside. She reheated the porridge from earlier and brought it to him. "Eat something; you've been unconscious for three days and must be starving!"
Lian Cheng Xue shook his head, lying on the bed with his face turned to one side. Xiang Xueer sighed, "I can understand your pain of losing your family, and I know that feeling powerless has led to innocent sacrifices. However, you need to realize that eating is to help your body recover quickly so that you can avenge your family sooner."
Xiang Xueer placed the bowl on the stool beside him. "I'm not very good at comforting people because I've always gotten through things on my own. I've left the food here; sometimes living is not just for oneself but also for the deceased family members!"
After she finished speaking, she turned and left the room, gently closing the door behind her. Inside, tears flowed continuously from the corners of his tightly shut eyes, soaking the entire pillow.
After a while, he struggled to prop himself up with one hand, trembling as he lifted the bowl of rice to his lips. A tear fell from the corner of his mouth into the bowl, and even each bite he took was filled with bitterness that seeped into his stomach.
Xiang Xueer stood outside the door, looking up at the swiftly moving clouds. Suddenly, she thought of herself and couldn't help but reveal a bitter smile. She had lost count of how many nights she had spent unable to sleep due to her father's death. No one could help her; at that moment, she had to bear it all alone.
After leaving the village, Li Yunyang turned around and asked, "Hey, I said Blue Dye, where should we start investigating now?"
Qingtian had already thought about it earlier: "I remember when I went to buy medicine for Lian Xiong; the name of that village was Ghost Night Village. It was evening, but I saw that all the villagers started closing their doors as if they were afraid of something. It was quite strange."
"Huh? Why didn't you ask clearly?" Li Yunyang found it odd as well. "It wasn't even dark yet in the late afternoon; why were they all closing their doors?"
"That's why we need to investigate!" Lan Ran Qingtian said. After that, the two mounted their horses and quickly headed toward Ghost Night Village.
When they arrived at the village, it was just about evening. As soon as they walked in, the villagers stared at them with strange looks, seemingly a bit fearful.
Li Yunyang felt it was strange. The two walked into a tavern intending to grab something to eat. However, as soon as they entered, the shopkeeper inside shooed them away: "Get out! We don't serve strangers at this time; we're closing soon!"
