Demon slowly raised its head, wiped the tears from its face, covered the several wounds on its chest, and gradually stood up. With a pair of eyes filled with affection and sorrow, it gazed at the deceased Sima Yi and began to recount an astonishing tale of love.
I was originally a small fish spirit in the Chishui River, named Water Lily. I could have cultivated in peace, but twenty years ago, I met the twelve-year-old Sima Yi in this river. At that time, I was caught by a fisherman and was about to be cooked as a delicacy. It was Sima Yi who saw my unusually beautiful red body and pleaded with the fisherman to sell me to him. He then released me back into the river, and from that moment on, I could not forget this little savior. Whenever he came to play by the riverbank, I quietly watched him from the water.
Water Lily originally had little desire, only wanting to watch him from afar. However, one day, a boy named Heart Demon appeared before me to tempt me, saying that he could help me become human so I could be with my beloved for eternity. I finally felt moved. But Heart Demon told me that to become human, I had to pay a price—a curse that would use my hundred years of cultivation to curse all the people of Illusion City. At first, I couldn't bear it, but after repeated persuasion from that boy named Heart Demon, I ultimately committed this terrible act and cursed the waters of Chishui River.
Overnight, all the citizens of the city fell under the curse. Seeing them living in such a miserable state made me regret deeply, but it was too late. When I went to find Heart Demon, he had already vanished without a trace. So, I anxiously waited for twenty years. I never truly shed my fish scales to become human; my ugly appearance made me unable to face my beloved.
After telling this story to the two people, they were both stunned. It turned out there was such an unknown tale behind it all.
"This is self-inflicted suffering! Cough cough!" Water Lily covered its chest with a hand and coughed up purple blood at the corner of its mouth. The severe injuries made it nearly unable to stand. Slowly, it sat down and crawled step by step toward Sima Yi's corpse.
"I'm sorry; it's all my fault!" Water Lily grasped Sima Yi's hand and spat out a mouthful of purple blood onto his clothes. Gradually, it sat up with its legs crossed and palms together in meditation. A red light began to rise slowly from its abdomen, and a small red pearl was expelled from its mouth.
"Hey, what are you doing?" Li Yunyang, thinking it was about to attack, quickly gripped his Azure Dragon Sword. However, he was stopped by Xiang Xueer, who furrowed her brows tightly as she stared at Water Lily's trembling body and said slowly, "It seems like it's trying to save him!"
Save him? Li Yunyang froze in shock and stopped moving. The two focused intently on the glowing pearl as it slowly emerged from her mouth and then spun in the air before swiftly heading toward Sima Yi's mouth.
"This... this is its soul pearl! No way! It wants to use this to save Sima Yi!" Li Yunyang finally realized what was happening and held his breath in disbelief: "Oh my god! Without the pearl, it will die!"
Will die? Xiang Xueer had never believed that there could be such love in this world that transcended life and death until today. Although one was human and the other a demon, it deeply shook her soul.
It had saved her life ten years ago; now she could exchange her life for his. If demons could repay kindness with their lives, how much more so for a hundred years of cultivation? Xiang Xueer shook her head as she looked at the already extremely weak Water Lily, asking just one question: "Is it worth it?"
The ugly face revealed an unusually gentle and beautiful smile, softly replying, "Worth it!"
A gust of river wind blew by, creating ripples on the water's surface. Without the Spirit Pearl, the fate awaiting Water Lily was lighter than death; it would dissipate into nothingness. Xiang Xueer watched the body that was gradually disappearing, still smiling as she looked at Sima Yi, who had begun to breathe again, murmuring, "I'm sorry!"
With a whoosh, Azure Wind swept past, carrying away the vanished body as if it had never existed in this world. Xiang Xueer looked up at the leaves fluttering away in the wind, shaking her head and sighing, "So foolish!"
"Ah, cough cough cough!" At the moment Water Lily vanished into ashes, Sima Yi gradually opened his eyes. The river water that lingered in his mouth was finally coughed out. Everyone rushed forward, and soon cries of joy echoed from the riverbank: "City Lord! City Lord! You have finally come back to life!"
At that moment, a miracle occurred. The mushrooms, rabbit ears, and tiger eyes on the Housekeeper's head all disappeared. The curse that had troubled everyone for three years finally lifted. Sima Yi sat up abruptly and quickly checked his groin; the hard foreign object had indeed vanished. Excitedly, he began to cheer.
"Great! Great! The curse is gone!" A crowd cheered joyfully. Li Yunyang quickly turned to check his backside; the dog tail had also decisively disappeared. He wiggled his hips and pulled Xiang Xueer closer, staring at her now deflated chest while nodding repeatedly with his chin resting on his hand: "Yeah, it really is more comfortable when it's flat!"
Upon hearing this, several veins popped up on Xiang Xueer's forehead. She stomped down hard on his foot and scolded, "You dead dog! How dare you call me flat-chested? I'll crush you!"
"Ah! That hurts!" Li Yunyang howled like a wolf. Then they heard his furious roar from the riverbank: "Xiang Xueer, I will definitely marry you one day."
Illusion City finally returned to its original appearance. The citizens were free from the curse. Sima Yi ordered a citywide celebration; families beat drums and danced lions, making it even livelier than New Year’s.
On top of City Tower, several people watched the bustling streets below and felt very happy. At this moment, Sima Yi smiled and said, "Miss Xueer, Brother Li, thank you so much for helping our citizens of Illusion City return to normal. So you both must stay here for a few days; I want to host a banquet for you!"
He seemed completely unaware of Water Lily's situation and excitedly invited them, thinking they were not in a hurry to leave; spending a few days eating and drinking was no problem at all. Xiang Xueer and Li Yunyang readily agreed.
However, she still thought about Water Lily's situation. She didn’t tell Sima Yi about it; for some reason, she felt that Water Lily didn’t want him to know. Reflecting on what had happened before, she recalled that when it appeared in this courtyard that day, it wasn’t there to harm anyone; it just wanted to see him once.
"Bang, bang!" The brilliant fireworks shot up into space, painting the black curtain of night in vibrant colors. Li Yunyang ran out to the street to enjoy the spectacle, while Xiang Xueer rarely had a moment of peace.
She looked up at the beautiful fireworks and remembered the time before her journey, watching fireworks on a private yacht. How pleasant and refreshing it was then, without demons to exorcise, and not having to be this miserable Exorcist.
"Ugh, I should go back to sleep!" She placed her hands on her hips and shook her slightly sore neck before turning to head back to her room. However, as she turned her head, she bumped into Sima Zhao coming toward her, creating an awkward atmosphere.
It's that little boy! Xiang Xueer recalled the last time when she had an embarrassing encounter with him. Feeling particularly annoyed, she noticed his not-so-pleasant expression and decided to turn away to avoid further embarrassment.
"Hey!" This time, it was the little boy who called out to her first. He walked a few steps with an angry expression, circled in front of Xiang Xueer, tilted his head, pouted, and began to hum: "Why do you run away when you see me? I'm not that petty!"
Huh? Xiang Xueer was taken aback. Last time, he had walked away upon seeing her. She was the one who left to avoid being embarrassed. Now he was making it seem like she was the petty one. Besides, he was just a teenager; forget it, she wouldn't stoop to his level.
"Heh!" Xiang Xueer forced a smile and replied sarcastically, "So, why aren't you at the market having fun? Why are you here enjoying the breeze?"
