Xiang Xueer revealed a confident smile at the corner of her mouth, slowly stood up, and placed her hands on her hips as she looked down at the entire river surface. At this moment, Old Man stood up beside her, put away his fishing rod, and sighed, "Sigh, time to go home, time to go home, didn't catch any fish again today!"
Li Yunyang saw her twisting her body continuously and walked over to ask, "Hey, what are you doing? Twisting around like an eel!"
Xiang Xueer turned her head and glared at him: "I'm exercising. I'm going to get into the water soon to check things out!"
Into the water? Li Yunyang suddenly woke up, pointing at the river surface and exclaimed, "What? You said you're going into the water?"
"Yeah, what's wrong?" Xiang Xueer turned to look at his shocked expression and smiled proudly: "I was the swimming champion in high school, and my longest breath-holding time is ten minutes!"
Li Yunyang frowned at Xiang Xueer and grabbed her arm: "No way, no way! We don't even know what kind of messy things are in that river. What if you go in and can't come back out?"
Xiang Xueer was too lazy to argue with him. She pushed his hand away, took off her Crossbow and gun from her back, and set them aside: "Don't worry, I'm just going down to take a look. You don't need to be so worked up. It's getting dark soon; if I don't go down now, I won't see anything!"
After saying that, she took off her outer coat, leaving only a white fur coat underneath, and walked toward the riverbank. Unfortunately, without a swimsuit or oxygen tank, she would have to come back up quickly after taking a look.
Once Xiang Xueer thought about it, she found a high spot and prepared to dive in. However, before she could jump, she was tightly embraced by a pair of arms. Turning her head to see it was Li Yunyang again holding onto her tightly.
"Hey, what are you doing? Let go of me!" Xiang Xueer shouted. Li Yunyang stubbornly refused to let go: "No way! I can't watch my future wife jump into the river to commit suicide. How am I supposed to explain this to my master later?"
What nonsense! Xiang Xueer turned around and elbowed him in the face while cursing: "Who wants to commit suicide by jumping into the river? I'm diving! You idiot, let go of me!"
"No way! No way! You'll drown!"
"Drown your big head! You pervert! Where are you touching? Let go of me!"
"Ahhh!" The two were screaming on the riverbank, pulling at each other. As a result, the rocks under Xiang Xueer's feet were too slippery; accidentally, with a 'splash,' both of them fell into the river together.
"Glug glug glug," Li Yunyang took a few sips of water, struggling to grab hold of a nearby reef. He quickly turned his head to look for Xiang Xueer, who had already seized the opportunity, took a deep breath, and slipped into the water.
"Hey, Dead Girl, where are you?" Li Yunyang anxiously searched the surface of the water. Xiang Xueer followed her plan and swam slowly underwater.
The water quality of the Chishui River was too murky, obstructing Xiang Xueer's vision as she swam deeper. After swimming about 50 meters, she suddenly felt a shadow flash quickly past her. Alarmed, she turned her head to look around but saw nothing.
The river didn't seem too deep; she vaguely noticed something strange at the bottom that looked like colorful corals and a large spherical object.
"What is that?" Xiang Xueer squinted her eyes and stared for a moment. However, she had already submerged too deep; if she didn't return soon, she would reach the bottom limit. After hesitating, she flipped over and started swimming back up. Yet, she was certain there was something unknown at the riverbed.
Xiang Xueer swam hard towards the surface. As she neared the light above, her vision gradually cleared. She was about five meters away from the surface when suddenly she felt a sinking sensation beneath her feet. A cold sweat broke out as she looked down to see a green, scaly hand resembling a fish fin tightly gripping her ankle.
Her eyes widened in terror as she looked down further; it was a person—a woman with disheveled hair and bulging goldfish-like eyes. Her skin was pale as snow, bare from the waist up, with long hair draping over her chest, partially obscuring her features. The lower half was covered in scales, with a tail fin that moved continuously in the water.
Rather than looking entirely human, it appeared that the upper body was human while the lower half was that of a fish. Oh my God, this image resembled the mermaid from Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tales but wasn't as beautiful as one might imagine.
But aren't mermaids supposed to be in the sea? Why is this one in a river? Xiang Xueer felt frustrated because this woman was firmly gripping her ankle, trying to pull her into the depths of the water.
"Who are you?" The woman suddenly opened her mouth, revealing rows of sharp fangs as she roared, her tail fin thrashing about as it slowly dragged Xiang Xueer down.
"Woo!" Xiang Xueer struggled desperately but choked on some water. This was not the beautiful mermaid from fairy tales; this was a monster. She reaffirmed this thought but realized she was running out of breath as the Fish Demon continued to pull her under.
No way! If you want my life, you still have a long way to go! She held on with her last bit of strength, flipped over, and quickly drew out a dagger from her ankle to stab at the Fish Demon's arm. It immediately released its grip and howled in pain.
"Ah!" A chilling scream echoed through the water as waves began to ripple violently across the surface of the river, causing Li Yunyang above to feel it instantly.
"There is a demonic presence!" He slightly wrinkled his nostrils as a wave of bloodiness rose from beneath the river. Having freed herself from the Fish Demon, Xiang Xueer quickly swam towards the surface.
It was no use; she had exhausted all her strength fighting the Fish Demon underwater, and her breath was reaching its limit. Was she really going to die in this water?
"Cough cough," she choked on a few mouthfuls of water, her limbs growing weak as she began to float in the water. Everything in front of her started to darken. Li Yunyang, where are you?
She didn’t know why she thought of that silly Li Yunyang. In the darkness, suddenly a hand reached out to her and grabbed her arm. Who was it?
She slowly opened her eyes, and the face that appeared before her was indeed Li Yunyang. He shook her body gently; Xiang Xueer's consciousness was starting to fade. He pulled her towards him and tightly kissed her lips, slowly transferring oxygen from his mouth to hers.
The oxygen in her abdomen began to revive Xiang Xueer's consciousness. She opened her eyes and saw Li Yunyang pulling her towards the surface.
"Ah!" Xiang Xueer burst out of the water, gasping for air. Li Yunyang held her waist tightly, relieved to see that she was finally okay, but his expression changed immediately as he shouted, "Xiang Xueer, are you trying to kill yourself? Didn't I tell you not to commit suicide?"
"Don't... don't say anything, just get me to shore!" Without another word, Xiang Xueer pulled Li Yunyang and quickly climbed onto the bank, collapsing onto the ground in a starfish position.
It was the first time Li Yunyang had seen her so flustered. He anxiously asked, "Hey, are you okay? What happened? I sensed a demonic presence on the surface and hurried into the water to find you, only to see you nearly drowning!"
After coughing up several mouthfuls of water, Xiang Xueer uncomfortably sat up from the ground and stared at the calm surface of the water for a long time before saying, "Thank goodness you came to save me; otherwise, I would have really been killed by that damned Fish Demon today!"
"Fish Demon?" Upon hearing those two words, Li Yunyang perked up and stood up with a splash, exclaiming, "No way! There really is a demon in this water! No wonder I sensed that demonic presence earlier!"
