Xiang Xueer glared at his finger, rolled her eyes, and made some modifications to her newly purchased waist bag, securing the freshly acquired AK47 and Crossbow on her back.
"Great! It seems this lady is fully equipped with weapons and ammunition. I won't have to fear those monsters anymore. That damned Heart Demon, if you have the guts, show yourself. I'll figure you out in a third of a second."
She proudly placed her hands on her hips and walked toward the next target. Beside her, Li Yunyang stared at her with wide fish-like eyes, looking completely unfazed, and had no choice but to pull out a map and take a look. "Next stop, Illusion City!"
"Illusion City? That name sounds pretty beastly. What kind of place is it?" Xiang Xueer tilted her head and glanced at the map in his hand. The coordinates were 200 kilometers south of their current location, marking their next unavoidable route.
Li Yunyang frowned and said, "I've heard of this city. It seems to be a large town that used to be very prosperous. Later, for some unknown reason, the entire country seemed to be cursed, and the people fell under a spell. Eventually, they were forcibly sealed off."
"Huh? That's so bizarre!" Xiang Xueer snatched the map from his hands and squinted as she examined it back and forth for a while. There was no other route to Sky Beyond Mountain, so they had to pass through here to reach their destination.
"Well!" She pointed at the words Illusion City: "Who cares about any curse? This lady is passing through; all monsters better get out of my way!"
Xiang Xueer felt that she finally had handy weapons and wanted to show off a bit more, so she prepared to head there without hesitation.
Thus, the two rode their horses toward the place called Illusion City, which was about a two-day journey away. As they got closer to the city, Xiang Xueer, sitting on a nearby rock eating dry rations, saw several villagers approaching with bags and a child.
"Hmm?" Xiang Xueer stretched her neck to take a closer look, rubbed her eyes, and looked again. She thought she was seeing things because one villager had a mushroom the size of a bowl on his head, and it was colorful.
After a moment, when the man and woman with the child walked closer, Xiang Xueer dropped her bun in shock as she stared wide-eyed. She rushed over and looked up at the mushroom atop the middle-aged man's head, asking, "Hey, big brother, what's that style? Is non-mainstream fashion trending in ancient times?"
The man looked at Xiang Xueer in confusion and turned to his wife, asking, "What does she mean? What is non-mainstream?"
Xiang Xueer blinked and couldn't help but reach out to touch the mushroom on top of his head. Oh my god, it was warm and soft; it didn't feel like plant material at all but rather like a fleshy tumor.
She was astonished. Suddenly, a child about seven or eight years old peeked out from behind the man, sporting a pair of white rabbit ears that wobbled as he moved. Startled, she jumped back and exclaimed, "Oh my, it's Bugs Bunny!"
The family of three looked at Xiang Xueer’s shocked expression and sighed deeply. "This young lady must be an outsider; doesn’t she know that all of us in Illusion City are cursed?"
She had heard of curses, but she never expected it to manifest like this. It was truly unique. The woman standing beside her removed her hat, revealing tufts of black hair sprouting from the sides of her head, which calmed Xiang Xueer down.
So this was it—a cursed city with cursed citizens, each one becoming neither human nor ghost. Xiang Xueer crossed her arms and asked, "How long have you all been like this? What caused it?"
The man shook his head with a sorrowful expression. "We don’t know. It’s been three years. Although the citizens and the city lord have been trying to find the cause, and various Exorcists and mages have been brought in, we still can’t uncover the reason!"
How pitiful! The child was fine; the two rabbit ears were quite cute. But the woman with hair growing on her face and mushrooms sprouting from her head would make intimacy feel unappealing.
Xiang Xueer pondered this when Li Yunyang returned from the river with a water jug. Upon seeing the family of three, he immediately drew his Azure Dragon Sword and shouted, "You bold Demon! How dare you appear in broad daylight! I am Li Yunyang, the foremost disciple of Feng Qingyang, the current Holy Ten Exorcists! Kneel and beg for mercy or surrender!"
Not this again! This idiot! Before he could finish his shouting, Xiang Xueer quickly covered his mouth and scolded, "You fool! Look carefully before you shout; these are people, not monsters!"
Not monsters? Li Yunyang blinked and slowly lowered his sword, cautiously approaching the three. He sniffed them up and down like a dog before finally relaxing. "They really aren’t monsters? But how can humans look like this?"
"These are the cursed villagers of Illusion City!" Before Xiang Xueer could finish speaking, Li Yunyang became overly excited. He reached out to pinch the child's rabbit ears, startling the child to near tears while he laughed with delight, "Wow, this is so fun! Rabbit ears!"
Sighing inwardly, Xiang Xueer thought about what sins she must have committed in her past life to end up with such an idiot as a teammate. She reached out to pinch Li Yunyang's ears and said helplessly, "Stop playing around, you fool! I'm trying to discuss something serious here!"
"Ouch! That hurts!" Li Yunyang yelped as he swatted her hand away. "What is it?"
"Of course, it's your favorite thing!" Xiang Xueer crossed her arms and looked at the tightly closed city gate with her bright apricot eyes, suddenly feeling excited as she exclaimed, "Hunting demons!"
Hunting demons was indeed Li Yunyang's favorite. As long as he could show off and be a hero, he guaranteed he would rush to the front lines.
After bidding farewell to the unconventional family of three, the two finally arrived at the entrance of Illusion City. Outside the closed gate stood two patrolling soldiers—one had a tiger tail protruding from behind, while the other had a crab claw for an arm, looking quite fresh and vibrant.
"Pfft!" Xiang Xueer held back her laughter for a long time. The long tail was one thing, but having a hand turned into a crab claw must be very inconvenient for daily life. Just as they were about to enter, they were stopped by the two soldiers: "Hey, outsiders are not allowed to enter!"
"Not allowed to enter!" Xiang Xueer looked up at the notice posted on the city gate, which boldly stated: Only entry is permitted, no exit allowed. It seemed that the entire city was like a besieged fortress, with all the citizens confined inside.
"What? Not allowed in?" Li Yunyang, unable to contain his impulsive nature, stepped forward ready to reason with them. He pointed at the tiger tail and shouted, "Look at you! Even like this, you still won't let us in!"
What nonsense! Xiang Xueer quickly stopped Li Yunyang and stepped forward, pointing to the emblem on her arm. "Officers, we are Exorcists. We have heard that Illusion City has been cursed by demons for many years, and we are here to exorcise them!"
"Exorcists?" Upon hearing this, the two exchanged glances and began to scrutinize them up and down. One was around thirteen or fourteen years old, and the other was seventeen or eighteen; how could they call themselves Exorcists? They immediately laughed condescendingly.
Li Yunyang's eye twitched violently as he stepped forward, ready to draw his sword. "What are you laughing at? I am the foremost disciple of Feng Qingyang, the leader of the Holy Ten Exorcists: Li Yunyang…!"
Xiang Xueer's expression darkened as she looked at their faces, suddenly recalling how those housekeepers at Ouyang Residence had looked at her. Every cell in her body became extremely agitated.
Without saying a word, she swiftly crouched down and drew two daggers from her legs in a flash, pressing them firmly against the necks of the two soldiers. The three people present were instantly stunned into silence and dared not move.
