Consort Xi did not expect this to happen suddenly, so she stood by anxiously watching the scene unfold. Ziyue also seemed flustered, while Mu Junqi appeared unaffected, standing there coughing heavily. Ziyue hurriedly said to Consort Xi: “Consort Xi, could you please bring a glass of water?”
Yun Ruo received the order and went to pour a glass of water. After drinking it, she finally felt a bit more comfortable and took a moment before looking up at Consort Xi and saying: “I apologize for making you laugh at me.”
“Not at all, I just didn’t expect you to be so ill. If you wanted to see Little Prince, it would have been better to send someone over instead of suffering in this cold weather,” Consort Xi replied softly, returning to her gentle demeanor.
Then, Mu Junqi chuckled and pointed at Little Prince: “You little thing have made Empress Dowager very worried.”
Little Prince seemed to sense something, babbling and flailing his arms. Seeing this, Mu Junqi walked over and picked him up from Huixin's arms; the real sensation made her feel immensely satisfied.
At that moment, Consort Xi suddenly asked: “I wonder if Empress has any other matters to discuss besides visiting Little Prince?”
Upon hearing this, Mu Junqi was somewhat confused by her words and stepped aside to look at her: “What do you mean by that?”
Consort Xi did not answer directly but took a sip from the tea cup beside her. Looking up at her, she said: “Perhaps you have forgotten, but I must remind you that long ago, the Emperor granted me the guardianship of Little Prince. I hope you can abide by this.”
Looking at her humble and submissive demeanor, Mu Junqi couldn't help but find it amusing. She then said: “I never expected things would come to this. Although This Palace hasn’t forgotten, it seems you have. If it weren’t for me, the Emperor probably wouldn’t have visited your palace, would he?”
Although it was a question, it pointed directly to the crux of the matter. Upon hearing this, Consort Xi’s expression turned slightly unpleasant; after all, it was an undeniable fact that without this child, the Emperor likely wouldn’t have come to her palace. However, she never anticipated that as soon as the Empress left the Cold Palace, she would be so eager to reclaim her child.
So she stood up and walked in front of Mu Junqi, smiling as she said: “Sister, why are you in such a hurry? It would be better to wait a few days before coming back. I wouldn’t want to see you looking haggard. Besides, with your current illness and Little Prince being weak, what if he catches something from you?”
Upon hearing this, Mu Junqi naturally understood her intentions but did not say so directly. Instead, she held Little Prince and played with him. Just then, a sharp voice suddenly came from outside the hall, followed by the entrance of Mo Xiao Li and Li Fusheng, both looking very grim.
Upon seeing Mu Junqi holding Little Prince, he immediately spoke up, "Consort Xi, how can you let the Empress hold the child?"
He then turned to Mu Junqi and said, "Do you not realize that your body has not fully recovered? If you run out like this, do you believe I will make it so that you will never see Han Zhe again in your life?"
Consort Xi, seeing Mo Xiao Li enter, was naturally delighted. Hearing him speak to the Empress in such a manner made her even more excited, but she pretended to advise, "Your Majesty, please calm down. Sister is just longing for her child; you must understand."
Mu Junqi merely looked at them without speaking, while a Nursemaid hurriedly took Little Prince from Mu Junqi's arms and stood aside. Mo Xiao Li coldly observed this scene, walked up to Mu Junqi, and said in a deep voice, "Return with me immediately; otherwise, I will truly prevent you from seeing Han Zhe."
Seeing them about to leave, Consort Xi felt anxious. Moreover, witnessing the Emperor's affection for the Empress made her even angrier. She couldn't help but blurt out, "Your Majesty, will the Empress harm Little Prince?"
Upon hearing this, everyone was shocked and looked at her. Mo Xiao Li turned to Consort Xi and said, "Consort Xi, if I hear such words again, do you believe I will let you experience what life in the Cold Palace is like?" With that, he turned and left.
As they walked along the way, people raised their eyes to look at them. Since Mu Junqi was tightly wrapped by Mo Xiao Li, no one knew who the woman in his arms was; they only saw her coming out of Yunxi Palace and speculated about her identity.
Before long, they arrived back at Tianming Palace. Upon entering, Mu Junqi began to cough violently again. Mo Xiao Li helped her catch her breath while angrily saying, "I have already instructed you not to go out; yet you keep doing so. If this continues repeatedly, one day your voice will be gone."
Originally intending to scare her a little, he did not expect her to stop coughing and ask, "If I can no longer speak, would you give Han Zhe to someone else?"
Mo Xiao Li looked at her in silence, unsure how to answer her question. He could only look aside and say, "Actually, I was forced into sending Han Zhe to Consort Xi for care. If your health fully recovers, then I promise you that I will immediately bring Han Zhe back to your side."
Upon hearing this, Mu Junqi finally smiled; perhaps for the first time in a long while, she smiled so happily. Mo Xiao Li's gloom also lifted because of this. Just then, Ziyue walked in respectfully greeting both of them and said, "Your Majesty, Empress, dinner is ready—"
"Bring it in. The Empress is unwell; going back and forth in this wind won't do her any good," Mo Xiao Li said softly.
Ziyue immediately nodded and walked out. Not long after, under Ziyue's lead, several palace maids entered carrying trays, slowly arranging the items neatly. Looking at the steaming hot dishes, Mu Junqi felt a bit dazed, realizing that it had been a long time since she had eaten hot food; every meal delivered to her was hard and cold.
Mo Xiao Li turned around and saw Mu Junqi's gaze fixed on the table. Thinking about life in the Cold Palace, she couldn't help but feel a bit guilty, so she reached out and pulled her to the dining table. After helping her sit down, she took her own seat while Ziyue stood by to serve the dishes.
Such a scene may have occurred frequently in the past, but ever since she entered the Cold Palace, she had not experienced such moments again. A sudden wave of emotion washed over her; if it weren't for her own stubbornness back then, perhaps they wouldn't have ended up like this.
Mo Xiao Li picked up a piece of rib and placed it in Mu Junqi's bowl, saying, "This is your favorite. Eat more."
Mu Junqi looked up at Mo Xiao Li and asked, "Your Majesty, do you ever regret marrying me?"
Mo Xiao Li fell silent for a moment before replying, "I have never regretted it; after all, you were the woman I decided on from the very beginning!"
This might have been a simple answer, but to Mu Junqi's ears, it sounded incredibly sweet. It felt as if those months in the Cold Palace were nothing compared to this moment. She looked at him with excitement, tears welling up in her eyes.
Mo Xiao Li did not expect that his casual remark would move her so deeply. Suddenly understanding much more, he turned to Ziyue and said, "You all can leave for now."
