Night quickly fell, and when Mu Junqi stood in the middle of the courtyard again, a thin layer of snow had already covered the ground outside, creating a white, quiet scene where one could almost hear the sound of snowflakes landing. At that moment, she suddenly thought of the person she had seen in the afternoon, and her brows lightly furrowed.
That person could come and go freely in the palace, indicating they were someone formidable. However, she couldn't discern whether they were friend or foe, nor could she figure out their true intentions.
As she lost herself in these thoughts, she suddenly heard voices in the distance. Looking up, she saw two figures gradually approaching. Although she felt some confusion, she remained standing there.
Before long, the two individuals came closer, and to her surprise, it was Mu Yueqing. Remembering what had happened a few days prior, she felt puzzled but still asked, "It's so late; I wonder what brings you here, or do you simply enjoy this place?"
Mu Yueqing ignored her and glanced at Yunxi, saying, "Is that person ready?"
Yunxi nodded. Only then did Mu Yueqing turn to Mu Junqi with a smug look and say, "The reason I'm here today is to let you know how our battle will end. Your fate will be quite miserable, so perhaps you should wait until your next life to challenge me again."
As soon as she finished speaking, two men dressed in black suddenly jumped down from somewhere and glared fiercely at her. Mu Junqi took a couple of steps back in worry but forced herself to speak boldly: "You shouldn't do this anymore. If you don't want to end up like me, I advise you to leave quickly. If the Emperor's people see you here, you won't be able to escape."
What was meant as a warning sounded entirely like a threat to Mu Yueqing. Angrily, she growled back, "The entire palace is looking forward to tomorrow's arrival. Besides, it's so cold now; do you really think anyone would show up here? Stop dreaming! Do you think I'm that foolish?" With a laugh, she disregarded everything and left.
At that moment, Mu Junqi realized she was truly afraid. Even if someone discovered her presence now, they would never believe it was Mu Yueqing who had sent them. The most pressing concern was how to escape from the two men in front of her. Eventually, everything returned to its original silence as the two men began to sneer and prepare to attack, slowly closing in on her until they stood right before her. "This time next year will be your death date," one said as he raised his sword and swung it toward her.
Mu Junqi knew she couldn't evade it any longer and closed her eyes. However, after a long moment without feeling the expected pain, she slowly opened her eyes to see the two men smiling at her. Confused but still cautious, she took a few steps back.
"You don't need to be afraid; we're just putting on a show. If it were anyone else tonight, you'd already be dead," one of them said.
"Who are you?"
Another person interjected, "We are here to protect you. The reason we agreed to come and assassinate you is to inform you that even if you are currently in the Cold Palace, there will still be many people waiting to kill you. Therefore, it would be better for you to leave here as soon as possible."
This left Mu Junqi even more confused, not understanding what it meant. However, before she could voice her doubts, she noticed a firelight gradually approaching in the distance.
The person across from her glanced over and said, "Empress, it seems your reinforcements have arrived. We will take our leave now, but..." Before finishing the sentence, they knocked Mu Junqi unconscious and then left.
