The people in the room were all nervously kneeling on the ground. Mo Xiao Li sat on the bed, looking at Mu Junqi, who had her eyes tightly closed, her face pale, and her breathing shallow and weak. Several blankets were already covering her, and even in this summer heat, one could still feel her trembling body.
After about the time it takes to burn a stick of incense, Xia Ziqian appeared before everyone, dressed in white like a celestial being descended from the heavens. A white jade hairpin held his long black hair up, and his handsome face was now furrowed with concern, his lips pressed tightly together.
"I have arrived late," he said.
As soon as he finished speaking, Mo Xiao Li exclaimed loudly, "Forget that! Come quickly and check on the Emperor."
Xia Ziqian immediately responded and took a few steps to the bedside. He reached out to check Mu Junqi's pulse. After a long moment, he shouted loudly to the group of imperial physicians behind him, "The Empress is in such a critical condition; are you all just going to stand there doing nothing?"
This immediately caught Mo Xiao Li's attention. She shot a cold glance at Zhang Taiyi and instantly understood everything. She raised her foot and kicked him in the abdomen with such force that he immediately spat out a mouthful of blood and collapsed weakly to the ground.
Then she turned to Li Fusheng and said, "Lock him up! If anything happens to the Empress, I will hold his entire family accountable." After saying that, she anxiously looked at Mu Junqi.
With urgency and worry, she said, "No matter what happens, you must save the Empress and the child in her womb."
Xia Ziqian did not respond but furrowed his brows tightly as he examined her. Her health had never been good; now pregnant and having fallen into water, it would be difficult to ensure her survival, let alone that of the child. However, he also understood how important this child was to Mu Junqi.
"Make sure to keep a close watch on the Empress. If anything happens, send someone right away," he instructed Huixin. Then he turned to Mo Xiao Li and said, "The Empress's condition is quite poor. If we had taken emergency measures from the start, it wouldn't have come to this. But now we have a plan; I will go prepare medicine." With that, he left.
At this moment, Mo Xiao Li looked at the sleeping Mu Junqi and still felt a lingering fear. No one knew how she felt when she saw Mu Junqi struggling in the water; it felt as if her heart would stop beating. In that moment, she was terrified that she might lose her.
Suddenly remembering something, she instructed Huixin a few times before leaving Jingxian Palace. Along the way, the palace maids and eunuchs were all trembling with fear; what had just happened had already spread throughout the entire inner palace.
Yun Jin Palace
Mo Xiao Li was dressed in a bright yellow dragon robe, sitting majestically at the desk, exuding a commanding aura. The entire hall was silent, with not a single sound, and the palace attendants dared not even breathe.
At this moment, a middle-aged man was kneeling in the hall. Since he entered the palace, he had heard about the Empress, but at this moment, there was not a trace of worry on his face; instead, he was scrutinizing Mo Xiao Li from head to toe.
Since his arrival, Mo Xiao Li had remained silent, staring intently at him. Thinking back to recent events, he felt completely at a loss and began to worry that the Emperor might be blaming him for having achieved nothing after such a long time.
Just when he thought the Emperor would remain silent, Mo Xiao Li suddenly spoke: “General Mu, the Empress fell into the lake today; her life or death is uncertain.” After stating this simply, he looked down at General Mu.
However, the man remained unmoved and merely clasped his hands in respect, saying, “Your Majesty need not be troubled.”
“Troubled?” Mo Xiao Li asked with some sarcasm. Although he had known from the beginning that Mu Junqi held no position in the Shogunate, he did not expect her biological father to have such an attitude.
“If I remember correctly, Empress is your daughter. Are you not worried at all?” he said with some anger directed at General Mu.
Only then did General Mu realize the gravity of the situation. He immediately knelt down on the ground and said, “I am terrified and do not know how the Empress is doing.” After a pause, he continued, “May I ask why Your Majesty summoned me?”
“Presumptuous!” Mo Xiao Li suddenly shouted angrily, striking the table with his palm and standing up in fury. “Then tell me, how is your investigation into recent events progressing?”
This outburst startled everyone present. However, General Mu respectfully replied, “I have already uncovered some information; it will surely come to light in a few days.”
Upon hearing this, Mo Xiao Li sneered coldly and walked up to him, saying icily, “In that case, I will give you this opportunity. If you still have nothing to show three days from now, do not blame me for being unkind.” With that, he flicked his sleeve and left.
General Mu suddenly collapsed to the ground, as if someone was obstructing the investigation. Every time they tried to uncover something, they always returned empty-handed. If nothing was found in three days, it would likely lead to a death sentence.
Leaving Yun Jin Palace, Mo Xiao Li rushed straight to Jingxian Palace. Someone had reported that Mu Junqi had taken the medicine, but the fate of the child in her womb remained uncertain. Thinking of this made her quicken her pace.
As she passed by Xiyue Lake, she noticed a white silk handkerchief by the lakeside. Li Fusheng walked over and picked it up, only to realize it belonged to Consort Xi. He recalled that when Huixin had come looking for him, she mentioned that Consort Xi was troubled and had attempted to drown herself in the lake.
Upon closer inspection of the lakeside, he realized that the spot where the handkerchief fell must have been where Consort Xi stood. There was a barrier about a foot high in front of her, making it unlikely for it to fall so easily. In contrast, Mu Junqi's position was on a slope with no barriers at all; one misstep could lead to a fall.
With this thought, Mo Xiao Li's previously gloomy eyes now burned with barely contained anger. It was clear that this was all part of a scheme; otherwise, how could so many people be involved while only Mu Junqi fell?
At this moment, Li Fusheng spoke up: "Earlier, the servant discovered some small beans at the spot where the Empress fell. At that time, everyone was focused on rescuing her, so the servant didn’t pay much attention. Looking back now, it seems someone wanted to prevent the Empress from giving birth."
"Are you sure?" Mo Xiao Li turned to Li Fusheng and asked.
"What I said is true," Li Fusheng replied confidently. "However, with so many concubines involved, it would be difficult to pursue this matter."
To his surprise, Mo Xiao Li smiled instead of getting angry, but her smile was too cold and devoid of warmth. Seeing such a ruler and thinking of the unconscious Empress at that moment made Li Fusheng realize that everything was testing his limits, and he couldn't help but worry for everyone in the harem.
