Why?
No one could understand. According to Liu Xuan, Miao Chengmin had only absorbed seven percent of the energy from the Chaos Crystals, so why was his index so terrifying? Everyone thought that having such an excessive index would be enough, but Miao Chengmin was... a bit too strong.
Aside from surprise, what everyone felt more was a sense of dread—at least Miao Chengmin had clearly stated that he would not harm Earth. But the unpredictability of life meant no one could guarantee that he truly wouldn’t be harmful to the planet, and given their appearance, anyone would inevitably associate them with bloodlust and brutality.
An Xiaotian was sweating in his palms—just Miao Chengmin alone was so powerful, and he had hundreds of compatriots. If such a terrifying Divine Realm force suddenly descended upon Earth, if it were made public...
Now they faced only two options: either form an alliance or eliminate them. However, setting aside humanity's instinct to defend their territory, if it was all for the purpose of combating the ultimate enemy Ban Sa, An Xiaotian felt that forming an alliance was the wiser choice. Rather than exhausting themselves in internal strife, it would be better to unite against a common foe.
“What should we do?” Xu Yicheng asked. “Such a powerful enemy is quite tricky.”
“They are not enemies and cannot be enemies,” An Xiaotian said.
“Hmm?” Xu Yicheng looked at An Xiaotian with confusion.
“Form an alliance.”
Nars and An Xiaotian spoke the answer in unison.
The room fell silent for a moment.
“Wait, let me sort this out,” Dr. Chen Hao sat up. “He is a zombie but has emotions and powers that we find hard to match. Whether he is an enemy or an ally, none of us can guarantee that one hundred percent, right? And look at our two female team members; they are more beautiful than flight attendants, but that guy’s face looks like a plane crash. I don’t want to judge by appearances, but really... it’s just too disgusting.”
“I agree,” Lu Sha said. “And those guys smell terrible.”
“What I mean is, I oppose this,” Chen Hao interjected as soon as Lu Sha finished speaking. “Since no one can guarantee they are allies, why not eliminate them to prevent future troubles? I don’t believe our Defenders are so weak! Can’t we handle one zombie?”
Dr. Chen Hao's words had become very aggressive; he gestured animatedly, almost standing up. He hoped everyone could understand his concerns.
“He is not alone,” Nars said. “Please calm down, Dr. Chen; we are analyzing your viewpoint and will consider it.”
“Ha ha ha, no, I don’t think you will consider it; you’ll just toss my opinion into the trash like a crumpled paper ball,” Dr. Chen Hao said as he leaned back in his chair, resting his arms on the armrests and rubbing his fingers together.
“A crumpled paper ball?” Nars raised his head as if seriously recalling what Liu Xuan had taught him.
It was clear that Nars was not angry; once everyone’s gaze shifted away from Dr. Chen Hao, he casually continued, “Everyone needs to understand that our opponent is a monster that has slaughtered half of the Divine Realm. We... need Miao Chengmin’s team. It’s not that we are weak; rather, for the future of this planet, we must make this choice. Regardless of whether he is friend or foe, we have to take a gamble.”
“Gambling with the future of Earth?” Chen Hao said.
“No matter what choice you make now, you are betting on Earth’s future, Dr. Chen,” Nars replied—he even knew about gambling.
Chen Hao sighed and turned his head to the side without saying anything further.
“We can only make the best choice; no matter how strong someone is, they cannot control things they cannot see or touch, Dr. Chen. I hope you understand.”
Chen Hao lowered his head and crossed his hands together.
“I have a question,” Xu Yicheng said.
“Please go ahead,” Nars replied.
“If we’re going to form an alliance, we need to meet them first; I don’t think they have any contact information or anything,” Xu Yicheng pointed at the rotating anatomical diagram of Miao Chengmin on the big screen.
"This, I think we have a plan." Nars smiled slightly and opened the next slide of the PowerPoint presentation.
"Shengfeng Village, the hometown of Liu Xuan," Nars pointed at the map on the big screen and said, "We have to thank Liu Xuan's partner, Ma Yihan; she discovered this with us."
"Wow," Lu Sha exclaimed.
Qin Weishan glanced at her and silently scoffed, thinking, "Her mind is always on love; what use is she?"
Just as he shifted his gaze back, he felt something watching his profile. He looked back and met Lu Sha's sidelong glance.
"You're the useful one, huh, trash," Lu Sha thought to herself, her widened pupils filled with disdain.
"The latest attack site is Tongcun. Tongcun and Shengfeng Village are very close to each other and both have public cemeteries. According to Miao Chengmin, he is actively tracking another Spirit Corps with Soulless Zombies. I believe if we go to Shengfeng Village, we will definitely encounter one of these forces. Although I don't know if they will play by the rules and bypass this area, I still say we should take a gamble. We have no choice; we must go all out and be bold."
General Jiang, who had been silent for a long time, suddenly exited the PowerPoint presentation. He pulled out a USB drive and said, "Everything I wanted to say has already been expressed by Mr. Nars. Before this meeting ends, I want to say..."
General Jiang paused for a moment, walked over to Nars, and said:
"No matter the outcome, effort is always worthwhile. You may not be the strongest force in the universe, but you will always be my pride. I am honored to meet you, my warriors, who tirelessly strive for the future of Earth."
"Uh, this isn't really related to our meeting," An Xiaotian said with an open hand, smiling at General Jiang.
"I'm just getting a bit sentimental; it's been a while since I've done that. The last time was with my wife..." General Jiang suddenly stopped, scratched his head under his hat, and said, "Does anyone have any objections to Nars's words? If so, feel free to speak up. This is a democratic country."
"No!" Chen Hao was the first to shout loudly.
"No!" Jiao An echoed while patting Lu Sha beside her. Lu Sha turned sharply to glance at Sister Jiao An and then shouted as well: "Me too!"
"No!" Qin Weishan immediately raised his booming voice, startling the two ladies next to him.
"None," Xu Yicheng summarized.
An Xiaotian gave Nars an "OK" hand gesture.
Xu Yicheng looked at Nars; Nars tilted his head and inquired with his eyes.
"Well... when we make decisions, we always forget one comrade," Xu Yicheng suddenly spoke up.
"Right," Nars slapped his forehead. "But where do we find him? I really have no clues at all."
Xu Yicheng said, "No problem; I'll go find him."
"Where will you look? How will you find him?" Qin Weishan quickly interrupted Xu Yicheng. "You can't fight or handle weapons; it's too dangerous. I'll accompany you."
"Hahaha..." Xu Yicheng just smiled and reached into his left chest pocket, holding up a piece of greenish-blue stone.
Qin Weishan pouted and said, "Okay, looks like I was overthinking—hey, how foolish of me." He closed his eyes again and entered sleep mode.
"I think it's doable," Jiao An gave Xu Yicheng a thumbs up.
In the evening at City S's Shengfeng Village:
"Xiao Mu! Xiao Mu!"
"Time to go home for dinner—"
"Hey! I'm coming—I'm coming—"
In the distance on the plain, a little girl's figure is slowly running towards the village. The shadow of Xiao Hei under the sunset echoes with her mother standing at the door: "Dear—"
"Hey—"
"Hurry up! Faster—The food will get cold—"
In the mountains, Miao Chengmin shields his eyes from the dazzling afterglow, watching the little girl as she runs and stops intermittently. The duck flock ahead of her strolls leisurely as if shopping. Even from this distance, Miao Chengmin can sense the girl's anxiety.
"I really wish I could help her throw those ducks over," he mutters.
George walks up beside Miao Chengmin and playfully punches his shoulder.
"There was a time when I was that little girl too." Miao Chengmin lets his hand drop weakly to his side, allowing the strong wind to sway his arm.
"The wind is really strong," Jiao An observes, looking at Miao Chengmin's arm.
Miao Chengmin smiles and says, "It's suitable for action. The wind can disperse my energy waves, preventing my energy from concentrating too much in my body. This will lower the chances of being detected by Virgil."
"That's impressive... so... professional," George struggles to find the right words, settling for "professional."
Miao Chengmin slightly raises the corners of his mouth and says, "Maybe it will go more smoothly than we expect."
"Is she here yet?" Jiao An immediately follows up.
Miao Chengmin looks at the thin wisp of smoke rising in the distance and confidently pats George on the back, saying, "It's great to have you here."
"Hah, someone complained I was too impulsive," Jiao An jumps up and down like a child.
Miao Chengmin bursts into laughter and pretends to threaten, "If you provoke me again, big brother will pull out his hand cannon and blast you away, believe it?"
George laughs heartily and replies, "Hey, I'm much older than you, okay?"
Seeing Miao Chengmin quickly suppress his smile, George becomes serious again, clears his throat, and asks Miao Chengmin: "What’s the plan?"
"Very simple." Miao Chengmin points to the Spirit Corps gathered behind them chatting casually and says, "Take good care of them. If anything happens, I'll launch a Chaos Sphere into the sky like a signal flare, got it?"
"Huh? We don't need to do anything?" George asks. "Then what's our purpose in coming back to Earth?"
"I'll need you in the future," Miao Chengmin replies as he watches the last bit of sunlight disappear. "It's time to set off; you must complete the task I've given you. If I’m not back before dawn... take everyone and leave without looking back."
George locks eyes with Miao Chengmin, clenching his fists hesitantly for a long time. With lips almost devoid of flesh, he can't help but step forward and hug Miao Chengmin.
"I promise to complete the task," George says decisively as he releases Miao Chengmin, revealing a sense of helplessness.
