"Give me a yellow-footed chicken, a bigger one."
Zhou Yake was carrying a small basket. She got up early today to buy groceries. She knew that Ancient Sorcerer had helped a lot during her husband's suicide incident, and since she didn't have any other good way to show her appreciation, she thought of making a nice meal for Ancient Sorcerer at noon.
"Oh, buying a chicken? It's been a while since I've seen you buy one."
Zhou Yake felt that this sounded a bit strange, but she didn't think much of it. She nodded and smiled, saying, "Yes, adding some dishes."
"Someone's at home, right?"
Zhou Yake was taken aback again; this sounded even stranger.
"Um, yes, we have guests."
"I knew it! It must be like that. You used to only buy chicken during the Spring Festival, and even then it was just half a chicken. Today isn't any holiday, and you're buying a whole one. If there weren't more people at home, how could that be? You must be making up for something."
Zhou Yake felt a bit confused; why did this sound stranger the more she listened? Even after buying the chicken, she couldn't figure out what was going on.
"It seems the rumors are true; she really has a man now."
"I heard too; it's a younger man than her."
"Tsk tsk, a few years ago when she was raising Chenchen alone, I thought she was really mourning for Fang Ming's kid. Now it seems that's not the case, and she's even in a May-December romance?"
"What you're saying isn't right; what era are we in? Are we still talking about the Three Obediences and Four Virtues?"
"Hmph, it looks like Lai Chen will suffer now with a stepfather. How will she live her life from now on?"
"If you ask me, that man must be after her house; compensation could be in the hundreds of thousands or millions."
"That’s not certain; maybe he’s just her kept man."
Zhou Yake's face grew paler as she walked back after buying groceries. She noticed many people pointing at her and whispering, their voices low enough to seem discreet but loud enough for her to hear.
Hearing these discussions, she finally understood the strange looks she had received while shopping.
Did she have a man now?
When did she get a man?
Zhou Yake suddenly thought of the Ancient Sorcerer and quickly realized what was happening. She wasn't foolish; she understood that someone must be spreading rumors.
Zhou Yake wanted to argue loudly, but she didn't know how to defend herself.
How could she explain this clearly?
The Ancient Sorcerer was currently renting her house, and being a widow, it was said that widows attract trouble. This situation left her with no way to clarify things.
As she slowly walked back along the small street, Zhou Yake felt as if everyone was watching and discussing her. It made her want to find a hole to hide in, and she began to walk cautiously.
Finally returning to her yard, Zhou Yake sighed in relief.
"Mom, you're back!"
Seeing her daughter rush towards her, Zhou Yake's face instantly lit up with a smile. "Chenchen, you're back!"
"Yes, Mom, I want to ask you something."
Lai Chen hugged Zhou Yake's neck and whispered in her ear, which made Zhou Yake curious. "What is it? Why so mysterious?"
"Do I have a new dad now?"
Zhou Yake's expression changed, and she exclaimed, "That's not true! Where did you hear that?"
"Those uncles and aunts are all talking about it, and my classmates are saying it too."
Zhou Yake swayed slightly, almost losing her balance. She never expected this matter would reach her daughter's ears.
It didn't matter how people discussed her; she absolutely wouldn't allow her daughter to be hurt in any way.
"Chenchen, listen to Mommy. This isn't true. Mommy will never marry again in her life. I will always be with you. Do you understand?"
Lai Chen blinked her eyes and said with a hint of grievance, "Why? I think Uncle Ancient Sorcerer is really nice. If he became my new dad, I would be very happy."
Zhou Yake was stunned, and then her face flushed with a rosy hue. She never imagined her daughter would say something like that.
"This... this..."
"Mommy, you're blushing! Do you like Uncle Ancient Sorcerer?"
Zhou Yake's face turned even redder, and she quickly interrupted her daughter's words, saying, "That's impossible! Have you finished your homework for today? If not, hurry up and do it. Mommy is going to cook dinner. There will be chicken legs tonight."
Being just a child, Lai Chen immediately forgot about the "new dad" issue upon hearing there would be chicken legs for dinner. She exclaimed, "Great! Great! There's chicken legs! I need to hurry and do my homework!"
Seeing her daughter rush into the house with excitement, Zhou Yake felt not joy but heartache. Over the years, her daughter had endured too much hardship with her; just a chicken leg could make her so happy.
After a while, Zhou Yake regained her composure and headed to the kitchen with the groceries.
Ancient Sorcerer stopped at a small shop on the street. After a good night's sleep last night, he felt great. Since there wasn't much to do, he decided to take a stroll around the area where he was staying. Killing time was one reason, but more importantly, he wanted to familiarize himself with the surroundings in case of any unexpected events, so he wouldn't feel like a headless chicken.
Of course, he believed that no one could force him to flee in panic, but it was always better to be prepared. This habit had been ingrained in him from his years in the military.
"Boss, I'll have a bottle of cola."
"Sure thing."
The old man running the shop took a bottle of cola from the fridge and handed it to Ancient Sorcerer, then continued, "Young man, what's your name?"
Ancient Sorcerer looked at him strangely and replied, "Huh? Do I know you?"
"Well, Yake is familiar with me; by relation, she should call me 'Second Uncle.'"
Lai Tiele chuckled as he looked at Ancient Sorcerer, nodding gently. The young man in front of him was tall and strong; he might not know much else, but he certainly had strength and appeared honest.
Upon hearing that the old man knew Zhou Yake, Ancient Sorcerer immediately smiled and said, "Oh, I see! I'm Ancient Sorcerer, and I'm currently staying with Sister Yake."
"Yes, I know. Ancient Sorcerer, don't blame this old man for being talkative. That girl Yake is kind-hearted. It's not easy for her to raise Chenchen alone all these years. You mustn't bully her; you need to treat her well, understand? Otherwise, I won't let you off easily."
"Huh..."
Ancient Sorcerer found himself slightly confused by Lai Tiele's words. How could he possibly bully Zhou Yake? Something about this conversation felt off. Even when he left the shop, he couldn't figure out what was going on.
