After taking a shower and wrapping a towel around himself, the Ancient Sorcerer picked up a cigarette and lit it before walking to the window. After leaving Fan Feng, he had checked into a hotel to get some good rest.
"It seems I need to rent a place."
Previously, due to his work as a bodyguard, he had been homeless and had no plans to rent an apartment. However, things were different now; he no longer needed to run around, so finding a fixed place to live became a practical issue. Staying in hotels all the time was not sustainable.
"Hey, I'll go rent a place in the morning."
Once he made up his mind, he decided to go ahead with it. Since he didn't have anything urgent to attend to at the moment, the Ancient Sorcerer planned to rent an apartment first thing in the morning and then buy some furniture to settle down quickly.
After finishing a cigarette, the Ancient Sorcerer took a sip of water and lay down on the bed. As usual, he focused on his Yintang, and immediately saw Luo Tian.
"Eh?"
Upon looking closely, the Ancient Sorcerer quickly noticed something "abnormal."
The Azure Dragon, White Tiger, Vermilion Bird, Black Tortoise, and Sun and Moon Twin Stars were still present on Luo Tian, but there were additional points on them that hadn't been there before.
"What are these things?"
The Ancient Sorcerer was one hundred percent sure that these points had not appeared previously; otherwise, he would have noticed them long ago. He had even developed a habit of observing Luo Tian every night before going to sleep for research purposes.
Concentrating hard, the Ancient Sorcerer tried to see these points clearly, but soon felt a sharp pain in his head and had to give up. He knew this was due to his insufficient mental strength; continuing to look would yield no good results.
Opening his eyes, the Ancient Sorcerer shook his head. Luo Tian was indeed very strange. It had saved him time and again and occasionally showed some "things": it had originally appeared as a smooth surface when healing Fang Ru, then revealed the Sun and Moon Twin Stars along with the Azure Dragon, White Tiger, Vermilion Bird, and Black Tortoise. Now, after eliminating Zhang Qi, black dots had appeared again. Unfortunately, those black dots were too small for him to see clearly due to his lack of mental strength.
"If only there were something I could eat that would increase my mental strength."
Shaking his head, the Ancient Sorcerer knew that this was merely a wishful thought. He had no idea how to enhance his mental power, and the inheritance of sorcery he had received contained no information on this matter.
Putting aside this thought, the Ancient Sorcerer turned to another issue. Every time Luo Tian underwent a transformation, it was almost always due to the absorption of something. The first time was when he absorbed the spiritual energy of ginseng, then during Zhi Fangru's time, he absorbed the Black Qi Serpent. This time with Zhang Qi, he had "refined" the Thousand Soul Banner, and each time Luo Tian seemed to level up and manifest something new—like this time's black dot.
"Do I need to go around subduing demons and vanquishing monsters in order for Luo Tian to continuously upgrade?"
The Ancient Sorcerer smiled wryly, and then suddenly had a thought. Initially just a self-deprecating idea, the more he pondered it, the more reasonable it seemed. Luo Tian appeared to have a certain "interest" in those evil things, and as long as he devoured them, he could level up.
If that were truly the case, then it wouldn't be bad at all. The Ancient Sorcerer stroked his chin and felt a bit excited. After receiving the inheritance of sorcery, he increasingly realized that this world was not as simple as he had imagined; behind people's daily lives lay many unknown mysterious phenomena.
Zhang Qi's Thousand Soul Banner, Fang Ru's Black Qi Serpent, Dashi Village's Scarecrow Curse, Fang Daoming's Golden Silkworm... which of these things was not far removed from ordinary people's lives? Yet they existed nonetheless.
His experiences had already proven that sorcery existed; what else was there besides sorcery?
Lying in bed, the Ancient Sorcerer stared at the ceiling and thought for a long time without arriving at any answers. A wave of drowsiness washed over him; he gently closed his eyes and slowly drifted into slumber. In his dreams, he seemed to enter a mysterious world filled with monks, Taoists, believers... ghosts, supernatural beings, and legendary vampires...
The dream was so absurd that when the Ancient Sorcerer woke up in the morning, he found it hard to believe. Monks and Taoists were quite normal; one could even accept supernatural beings since there had been a craze for Qigong masters in the late 1980s and early 1990s who often claimed to possess special abilities. However, vampires felt too distant.
The Ancient Sorcerer quickly dismissed these thoughts. After washing his face and brushing his teeth, he changed clothes and went out. He had already decided last night that today he would look for a place to rent.
As a modern metropolis, Guanghai City had a high degree of commercialization with real estate developments everywhere. Various so-called communities were springing up endlessly; there were also many villa areas. Economically speaking, it was no longer an issue for him, but the Ancient Sorcerer had little interest in such properties.
What truly interested him was the Old Town District of Guanghai City. Although the houses in that area were somewhat old, it was precisely because they had some history that they felt very comfortable to live in. More importantly, the Ancient Sorcerer liked the atmosphere of old streets: narrow roads lined with aged trees that had grown for many years; under those trees were stone benches where several elderly men played chess intensely; or suddenly there would be shouts and cries from parents scolding their children...
The Ancient Sorcerer loved this sense of humanity, which could not be found in those so-called commercial communities.
The Old Town District of Guanghai City was not large but located in the central area with convenient transportation. Additionally, one characteristic was that buildings were generally not tall—about six or seven stories—and one could even find two-story small buildings with small yards. Such buildings were exactly what the Ancient Sorcerer was looking for.
Of course, such a Small Building is not easy to find. After discovering several that had already been rented out, I finally found one deep inside that was exactly the two-story type with a small Yard that I wanted.
Looking at the rental notice posted on the iron gate, which was still quite new, the Ancient Sorcerer felt a surge of excitement and thought to himself that it must not be rented out yet. He quickly took out his phone and dialed the number written on it. When the call connected, a soft woman's voice came through:
"Hello."
The Ancient Sorcerer was taken aback for a moment; the voice on the phone sounded very weak, as if she were seriously ill. However, he didn't think too much about it and immediately said:
"Is there a house available for rent?"
"Yes, there is."
The Ancient Sorcerer was overjoyed; her response indicated that the house had not been rented out yet.
"I'm right in front of the house. Are you available now? I would like to take a look at it."
"Okay, please hold on for a moment."
After a while, the door to the house opened, and a young woman walked out, taking small steps toward the yard gate.
