Shen Yuan shouted, calling out the names of the orphans one by one.
In this era, young people generally marry at 25 or even 30 years old, and some choose not to have children. Those who do typically have only one child and take good care of them... so orphans are rare.
The children sent to orphanages are mostly due to congenital deficiencies, such as deformities or disabilities... Occasionally, there are healthy orphans with normal intelligence, but they are quickly adopted.
Orphans like Shen Yuan and Red Sister, who have been repeatedly rejected for adoption despite being perfectly normal, usually have various reasons—no one knows Red Sister's reason, but only Shen Yuan knows his own!
This orphanage is already the largest in the southern part of the city, with only about twenty or so orphans. Shen Yuan knows each child's name, appearance, and even personality very well.
However, no matter how much he calls out, there is no response; only a few Mutant Mice come scurrying in response to the noise!
Shen Yuan's heart sank, feeling as cold as the ice that never melts in Antarctica!
He rushed up the stairs and headed for the second floor!
As soon as he reached the second floor, he was confronted by a Mutant Mouse!
Shen Yuan swung his Shovel and struck it back; however, he was also forced to step back by the tremendous force and nearly fell.
Then came several more strikes, and Shen Yuan took down that Mutant Mouse!
He had roughly estimated the combat power of the Mutant Mouse, which was certainly stronger than an ordinary person. However, if it were a trained soldier with a sufficiently sharp and sturdy weapon, killing a Mutant Mouse one-on-one would definitely not be a problem!
If it were a police officer or soldier with a gun, as long as they were prepared, killing a Mutant Mouse would be no problem—it's not that a handgun can't kill a Mutant Mouse, but rather that the Mutant Mouse has such strong vitality that one must hit a vital spot to succeed.
Shen Yuan had previously been trained by Red Sister and had learned some combat skills for a period of time. Those were the most painful yet fulfilling years of Shen Yuan's life, significantly enhancing his reaction and combat abilities.
Was it to train his body to defend the homeland?

Orphans without parental care are seen as prime targets by them!
On one occasion, Shen Yuan witnessed an orphan being taken away by a trafficker, powerless to help. Later, Red Sister scolded him fiercely and then trained him in fighting skills.
Had it not been for those painful yet fulfilling years, today’s Shen Yuan, even with an activated Shovel, would not have been able to kill a Mutant Mouse; instead, he would have been killed by the Mutant Mouse long ago!

Shen Yuan searched each room but found nothing.
His expression grew increasingly grim as he soon discovered a corpse, mangled beyond recognition. He could only roughly guess that it was the body of a child.
From the torn and bloodstained clothing, he discerned which child it was.
“Ling Han!” Shen Yuan growled.
Then came the second corpse, the third...
Shen Yuan's heart grew colder, his jaw clenched tighter, as he quickly found seven corpses!
Suddenly, he heard a cat's meow.
Is there a cat in the orphanage?
Yes, there is one. It belongs to a little girl named Chi Qinghua, who was adopted with a small kitten, a Tabby Cat. Now it has grown up and only approaches Chi Qinghua, being unfriendly to others.
Because of it, Chi Qinghua has been isolated by the other orphans, always living alone in her own room... because no one dared to stay with her; that Tabby Cat known as A Hu is too fierce, and the children are all afraid of it.
The cat's meow came from the third floor.
Shen Yuan hurried upstairs and first saw three Mutant Mice!
A corpse lay in the hallway, mangled and bloody, while one of the Mutant Mice was gnawing at the body. The other two Mutant Mice were confronting a cat.
It was A Hu!
However, it looked different now; it had grown significantly larger since a week ago, measuring about 40 centimeters in length—slightly smaller than the Mutant Mice—but it was extremely fierce, growling lowly, causing the two Mutant Mice to not dare approach!
Because it had mutated too!
Cats are natural enemies of mice.
However, A Hu was too small compared to the larger and more frenzied Mutant Mice, which had bloodshot eyes. Although they feared A Hu, they did not retreat and were ready to attack at any moment!
Shen Yuan saw behind A Hu at the end of the hallway—a seven or eight-year-old girl lying there.
"Azure Mantis!"
The girl is Chi Qinghua!
She looks fine, her chest still rising and falling slightly, at least she is alive, and there are no injuries on her. However, A Hu is injured, with a corpse of a Mutant Mouse lying next to Chi Qinghua, its neck bitten off and blood flowing.
Clearly, A Hu killed it to protect its little master!
Seeing Chi Qinghua, a hint of tenderness flashed in Shen Yuan's eyes.
The name Chi Qinghua was given by Shen Yuan.
He found her during a holiday back in Pengcheng, by the pond, looking ragged and clearly a child from an ordinary, even impoverished family.
Azure Mantis refers to money.
The name was chosen in hopes that Chi Qinghua would have plenty of money in the future and live a good life.
Since he picked her up, Chi Qinghua likes him very much and only trusts him. This little girl is very sensitive; apart from Shen Yuan, she does not get close to anyone else, not even Old Director or Red Sister.
Because of this relationship, Shen Yuan became the only person who could approach Chi Qinghua—because A Hu trusts him.
"A Hu!" Shen Yuan called out, and A Hu whimpered towards him, the wounds on its back still bleeding—it was seriously injured and had held on until now with great difficulty.
"A Hu, I'm here, leave it to me!" Shen Yuan waved his Shovel and slowly approached.
The corpse-eating Mutant Mouse was the first to charge at him!
Shen Yuan's reaction speed seemed to be faster than before. After killing several Mutant Mouse, waves of heat surged into his body; his physical condition seemed to have improved significantly, comparable to when he was not in decline two months ago.
With one swing, he struck it down, splitting its head open!
The Shovel is quite strange.
When I arrived at the orphanage and killed the first Mutant Mouse, it seemed less sharp than before. However, when I killed the second Mutant Mouse, it felt a bit sharper. And now, it has become even sharper!
With one thrust, I impaled a Mutant Mouse, but the other two Mutant Mice showed no fear. Instead, they became more aggressive and charged at Shen Yuan!
Suddenly!
A Hu leaped up and pounced on one of the Mutant Mice, biting down on its neck!
However, the Mutant Mouse was also quite fierce and began to wrestle with A Hu.
Shen Yuan swung the Shovel once more and took down another Mutant Mouse, finally helping A Hu finish off that one.
A Hu was gravely injured, nearly on the brink of death.
Yet it clung to the Mutant Mouse's neck, tearing off a chunk of flesh and swallowing it before starting to lick the blood.
Shen Yuan ignored it and rushed over to pick up Chi Qinghua, checking her carefully. He found that she was indeed fine, only having some bruises on her head.
She had been knocked out.
