The driver turned on the radio, playing music filled with Latin flair. The lively rhythm echoed in the car, contrasting sharply with the slightly tense and eerie atmosphere inside. Erin, Mark, and Lisa listened to the lively music, but their moods remained tense, becoming even more alert.
Mark tried to break the uneasy silence. He cleared his throat and asked, "Why do drivers not want to go to Esperanza?"
Upon hearing this question, the driver curled his lips into a mysterious smile, his eyes glinting with a teasing hint. "You’re not the first group to go there for some research investigation..." he said slowly, his tone carrying an ominous undertone.
Mark, Erin, and Lisa were drawn in by his tone, their feelings of unease intensifying. Unable to help himself, Mark pressed on, "What happened to those who went before?"
The driver chuckled lightly, his eyes flickering as if recalling something terrifying. "Those people... either went insane or just vanished without a trace." He paused for a moment, seemingly enjoying the surprised expressions on their faces before continuing, "Ha! In any case, for those people, that place is certainly not a lucky one."
Erin felt a chill run down her spine. She turned to look at Lisa and Mark, seeing the same concern reflected in their eyes. His words made them even more wary of the place they were about to head to; the mystery and danger of Esperanza seemed beyond their expectations.
"Why did those people go insane or disappear?" Lisa couldn't help but ask, her voice trembling slightly.
The driver shrugged as if indifferent. "Who knows? Maybe it's some kind of force there; maybe they had issues themselves. Anyway, I’m only responsible for getting you to the entrance; what happens inside is none of my business."
Mark took a deep breath, forcing himself to calm down. "Thank you for the warning; we will be careful," he said firmly.
The car continued along the winding road, the Latin music still echoing inside, but this time it could not dispel the unease in the hearts of the three. Erin, Mark, and Lisa each sank into their own thoughts, contemplating the challenges and unknown dangers ahead.
As they got closer to Esperanza, the scenery along the roadside became increasingly desolate, and an invisible pressure seemed to permeate the air.
The vehicle moved through the wilderness; the surroundings gradually turned barren and dilapidated. Weeds grew wildly on both sides of the road, swaying in the wind as an eerie atmosphere quickened my heartbeat. Suddenly, my gaze was drawn to a dilapidated church not far away; that once solemn and sacred building now stood as mere ruins, as if it had endured countless years of wind and rain.
In the dirt pile in front of the church lay scattered fragments of destroyed statues. I couldn't take my eyes off those shattered statues of God, their eyes seemingly fixed on the sky, as if they had died with grievances, their gaze filled with endless sorrow and despair. This sight sent a chill down my spine, a coldness rising from deep within me, as if something sinister was crawling up my spine.
Although I wasn't a devout believer, the bizarre scene before me still sent shivers down my spine. The dilapidated church and the ruined statues seemed to tell an ancient and terrifying story. I struggled to control my emotions, but that inexplicable fear lingered in my heart, like a cold hand gripping my heart tightly.
I couldn't help but turn away, wanting to divert my gaze from the desolate scene. However, in that moment, I seemed to see something—a cicada gnawing at the statue's eyeball. The sight was so strange that I could hardly believe my eyes. The cicada's mouthparts were biting into the shattered eyeball, producing a faint and eerie sound, as if it were enjoying this horrific feast. Suddenly, it seemed to burst the eyeball open, and remnants and liquid splattered out, filling me with intense fear.
I screamed in terror at this horrifying sight and accidentally bumped into Lisa beside me. She looked at me in surprise, her face filled with concern. "Erin, are you okay?" she asked hurriedly, her eyes full of worry.
I struggled to control the fear within me and quickly assured her that I was fine. "I'm okay; I just dozed off for a moment and got startled," I tried to make my voice sound calm, but the fear inside me continued to churn.
I shook my head, trying to calm myself down. The cicada gnawing at the statue's eyeball and the dilapidated church still lingered in my mind like an omen, warning us that the road ahead would be fraught with unknown dangers and challenges.
The car continued to speed along, and soon the greenery that had surrounded us turned into soil resembling fresh blood, as if stained by it, sending chills down my spine. There were no plants on this land; the bare ground appeared especially desolate and eerie. In the distance, the outline of Esperanza Town gradually became clearer, particularly that tall and majestic triangular building which first caught our attention.
This church-like structure stood out starkly in the wilderness; its peculiar shape exuded a sense of mystery and majesty. Unlike ordinary churches, it radiated an unsettling aura. It was the only prominent presence in this barren land, standing isolated as if silently watching our arrival.
Mark looked at the wasteland with a sense of tension. "A wasteland means we can only get supplies from the town; if anything happens, escaping will be quite difficult," he said softly, his tone laced with concern.
I nodded, understanding his worries. As our vehicle continued forward, the closer we got to the town, the more oppressive the presence of that triangular building felt. It loomed over us like a massive shadow, suffocating us with its weight.
"What is that building?" Lisa asked softly, her eyes filled with curiosity and unease.
"It looks like a church, but it feels completely different," I replied, trying to calm myself down. "Maybe this is part of what we need to investigate."
Mark took a deep breath, trying to focus on the task at hand. "We need to be careful and make sure everything is safe. Everything here seems a bit unusual."
