"Remember to listen to your brother, okay? Don't cause him any trouble!" Aunt San held the girl's hand, and the girl kept nodding, not uttering a single word of rebuttal or expressing her own thoughts.
Jiang Yizhou listened to his mother counting the luggage in the bag and giving future instructions, feeling a headache over that mother-daughter pair. Aunt San was indeed as his mother described—indecent, and even worse words his mother wouldn't say. Her daughter, Jiang Yizhou's cousin, was completely like a puppet; with just a little push, she would move without any opinions of her own. If she were to wander outside alone, it wouldn't be surprising if someone took advantage of her naivety.
Fortunately, with someone watching over her, there would definitely be no mistakes. If told not to wander around, she would stand still without moving.
It was estimated that once their house was built and the villagers gradually believed they had become wealthy, there would be many seeking jobs from them. They could only wait for those issues to be resolved slowly in the future. Jiang Xiaojuan's situation was easy to handle; he could arrange a job for her with Li Yue since she had at least attended high school.
Now it was already the seventh day of the Lunar New Year. His mother hadn't brought up any matchmaking plans as initially expected, probably thinking their family conditions had improved and looking down on those previous prospects. Their family visited his mother's parents' home and also went to his aunt's house who had married into another town. The rest were visits to the homes of elders still living in the village.
Afterward, there were likely more families to visit for New Year greetings. However, Jiang Yizhou used work as an excuse to dodge his parents' inquiries and explained that the working hours were different between office jobs and construction work, which led to his current appearance.
Since the train station was in Xichuan, his mother and Aunt San sent him to the shuttle stop in the countryside.
He found two seats next to each other and sat down. Jiang Yizhou said nothing, just gazing out the window at the outside world, while Jiang Xiaojuan sat awkwardly in her seat, looking like a persecuted girl.
Jiang Yizhou sighed inwardly; it was only because this cousin was obedient that he agreed to help her. Given that girls were generally at a disadvantage and with her personality, he wasn't worried about her causing any trouble under Li Yue's supervision. Moreover, he would complete all procedures as soon as he returned home and would be going abroad soon; there wasn't much to worry about.
"Which middle school did you attend?" Jiang Yizhou broke the silence and started chatting with his cousin casually.
"…Fenggang Middle School." Jiang Xiaojuan paused for a moment before answering truthfully.
Fenggang Middle School? There wasn't much difference among middle schools; it was only in high school that disparities between various towns began to widen. Why did it matter where one attended middle school?
Then Jiang Yizhou slapped his forehead; her father was from that area, which might explain it.
“Over here, Yi Zhou, I'm here!” Ding Zhengnan waved her arms excitedly. It had been so long since she had communicated with Jiang Yizhou that she missed her a lot, although she also complained about why Jiang Yizhou didn’t call her. Even if she didn’t have a phone, couldn’t she use one?
However, all of her feelings disappeared when she saw Jiang Yizhou.
Jiang Yizhou woke up in the morning, listening to the announcements in the train carriage, and realized they were nearing the capital. There were missed calls on her phone, all from Ding Zhengnan. The return date was already set, so she had no choice but to call her back to confirm the train's arrival time and their meeting place.
Jiang Yizhou looked towards the source of that familiar voice in the crowd. Wrapped in thick clothing, it was hard to make out the outline. She waved to her cousin to come over with her luggage.
Ding Zhengnan, with a beaming face, took hold of one of Jiang Yizhou's luggage handles. Her expression stiffened for a moment. “Yi Zhou, who is this girl?”
Jiang Yizhou reached out and gently touched the girl’s face, smiling as she explained, “What are you thinking? This is my cousin, named Jiang Xiaojuan. Her mother asked me to help her find a job, so I brought her to the capital!”
Now was not ancient times where familial ties were emphasized; there were no complicated relationships to worry about. With that introduction, Ding Zhengnan's nervous expression relaxed as she extended her hand to Jiang Xiaojuan. “Hello, I’m Ding Zhengnan, your brother’s girlfriend!” she said meaningfully while glancing at Jiang Yizhou.
Jiang Xiaojuan nervously wiped her sweaty hands on her clothes before lightly shaking Ding Zhengnan's hand and then letting go. “Hello, nice to meet you!”
With a slightly commanding tone, Jiang Yizhou said to Xiaojuan, “Don’t be nervous; it’s just meeting someone. You can call her Ding Jie or Ding Zhengnan!”
Jiang Yizhou liked it when others engaged in conversation with her, while Jiang Xiaojuan was more of a listener. Therefore, for Jiang Yizhou, this journey felt no different than traveling alone; the only difference was… having an extra pet on a leash?
Although this metaphor was somewhat inappropriate and could be seen as insulting, Jiang Xiaojuan was indeed obedient like a pet—very well-behaved. Jiang Yizhou couldn’t understand how Aunt San educated her daughter.
In any case, the two felt quite bored during the journey. For instance, Jiang Yizhou didn’t like eating on the train; the boys could handle it well enough. However, the girl didn’t dare suggest buying something to eat and ended up hungry until morning. It wasn’t until Jiang Yizhou noticed that she seemed a bit hypoglycemic that she bought her breakfast.
Seeing Ding Zhengnan's car, Jiang Xiaojuan felt hesitant and didn't know what to do.
"Just put your luggage down and get in the car!" Jiang Yizhou sighed. This situation reminded him of teaching his parents how to use smart devices in his previous life, how to use WeChat and Alipay for transactions. When encountering a whole new world, everyone tends to feel awkward. However, the duration of this awkwardness varies; for someone like Jiang Xiaojuan, it would probably take quite a while.
After placing the luggage in the trunk, Jiang Yizhou took a seat in the passenger seat.
Ding Zhengnan started the engine and asked Jiang Yizhou for suggestions, "Where should we go first?" She hadn't anticipated having an extra person, so her original plan was disrupted.
"Today might be a bit busy, just take me to the place I've rented!" Jiang Yizhou replied while yawning. People can take a break, but work doesn’t stop. Regardless of whether you are present or not, it keeps coming in, especially as a Boss.
Ding Zhengnan shot a sharp glance at Jiang Yizhou, unwilling to say even two polite words to decline. However, she could only listen; bringing along a third person, especially Jiang Yizhou's cousin, made everything less convenient.
...
Li Yue arrived in the capital on the fourth day of the Lunar New Year, which was Monday, and started working. The official opening would be next Monday, so there was no need to rush.
However, she had new ideas that needed preparation. Last November, she opened an internet café in the capital and thought it was quite good. She considered trying to open one as well. The Computer Training Class had plenty of computers, and she could let that girl Jiang Yizhou mentioned work as a staff member at the internet café.
