"Put in a little more, wait until the first few enemies are at the edge of the fire before shooting, did you all hear that?" Tie Zhu whispered while crouching.
"Understood, Squad Leader!" The veterans simply nodded. For example, Shang Dahai and Yu Dayong had quietly crawled to their prepared shooting positions and were carefully aiming their guns at the two Japanese soldiers walking in front.
The new recruits were still hiding behind the trench, occasionally peeking out with their heads, appearing somewhat excited, and whispering to each other from time to time.
"Don't talk, be careful not to expose our position!" Tie Zhu set aside his Shunliu Brother weapon and picked up the scoped rifle, carefully observing the Japanese Army across from him.
As usual, standing at less than five feet tall, he crouched low while holding a rifle nearly as long as he was tall. Wearing a steel helmet, he moved very slowly, like an old cat inching forward. His movements were methodical, with the three leading soldiers ensuring that at least one of them was shielded by some object to protect vital areas.
"On my command, five meters left!"
With the scope, Tie Zhu could see clearly. Although he didn't understand some of the other features on the scope, he knew it allowed him to see farther and clearer.
"Four steps! Load your bullets!"
After Tie Zhu finished speaking, the two veterans, Shang Dahai and Yu Dayong, immediately pulled back their bolts gently and then lay down quietly without saying a word.
Meanwhile, several new recruits pulled back their bolts but kept moving their gun barrels around aimlessly, aiming here and there without any definite target.
"Three steps, everyone prepare to shoot. Zhou Wei and your group, keep your gun barrels steady. Choose one target; once you have it in your sights, wait for my command before pulling the trigger!"
"Got it, Squad Leader!"
Several new recruits quickly nodded in agreement and began to slowly search for their targets.
"Two steps!"
"One step, fire!"
As the enemy soldiers slowly moved closer to the edge of the campfire, an order was immediately given to open fire.
"Bang! Bang! Bang! Da da da!" The sound of the rifle mixed with the sound of a light machine gun immediately echoed in the empty alley.
"There are enemy troops, charge!" At the first sound of gunfire, a shout came from the opposite side, and several soldiers immediately grabbed their weapons and charged forward.
These soldiers were experienced veterans. They knew it was not the time to look for cover; they were exposed in the light of fire. If they did not immediately run out of this area, they would be like live targets, easily shot by the enemy across from them.
The first round of shooting hit three soldiers, which was the result of Tie Zhu, Yu Dayong, and Shang Dahai, while the other new recruits had no success at all.
After the first round of shooting ended, the enemy soldiers charged while firing, causing the new recruits to hide in the trenches and not dare to show their heads. Only Tie Zhu and two veterans were firing from their positions.
"You damn kids, get up! There are only a few enemies; open fire! Are you scared off by just a few bullets? What kind of soldiers do you think you are? Go home and grow sweet potatoes!" Tie Zhu shouted while shooting, frustrated by the poor performance of these new recruits; none of them could shoot effectively.
