"Squad Leader, the enemy, the enemy is coming!" Just as Tie Zhu was pulling Zhou Wei's hand, preparing to send him to the rear, Shang Dahai beside him patted Tie Zhu's shoulder and cautiously reminded him.
"Huh? The enemy is here?" Tie Zhu released his grip on Zhou Wei's hand and quickly returned to his position, squinting at a spot not far away.
Taking advantage of Tie Zhu loosening his grip, Zhou Wei grabbed his weapon and ran to a nearby position, keeping a safe distance from Tie Zhu, fearing he would try to send him to the rear again.
Tie Zhu didn't have time to worry about Zhou Wei now; the enemy was already very close. About fifty meters away by the fire, he could vaguely see several figures moving. He couldn't make out how many people there were, but it shouldn't be many.
"Dahai, can you see how many people are over there?"
Shang Dahai shook his head. "Squad Leader, it's too far to see clearly. Those Little Devils aren't showing themselves; they're just hiding and moving around."
Hiding behind a sandbag, Tie Zhu observed for a long time but still couldn't determine the number of enemies. He kept seeing shadows moving but no one stepping out.
"What are those Little Devils doing? Why aren't they attacking?" Tie Zhu couldn't figure it out after watching for so long.
At that moment, he suddenly saw Shang Dahai hanging a cigarette and getting ready to light it. He quickly snatched the cigarette away. "Are you trying to get yourself killed? The enemy is right in front; smoking will make you a target!"
Shang Dahai chuckled sheepishly and scratched his head without saying anything. In the past, he was a Machine Gunner and liked to smoke one or two cigarettes before a fight. However, he had never fought at night, so he didn't understand these things.
Tie Zhu knew all this from what Shunliu Brother had told him: never smoke at night; even if you do, don't expose yourself. The enemy's marksmanship is very accurate, and you shouldn't move around near the campfire either.
"Squad Leader, are we going to fight?" A new recruit beside him looked somewhat excited and cautiously leaned closer to Tie Zhu, asking curiously.
For the new recruits in the squad, this was the most exciting moment, but as soon as the gunfire rang out, it became their most fearful time.
Tie Zhu shook his head and said, "Don't rush. Let's take our time with the enemy and see what tricks they want to play. We have plenty of time."
After saying that, Tie Zhu shrank back under the sandbags and took out a match. He carefully lit the cigarette he had just snatched from Shang Dahai's mouth. However, his entire body was concealed by the sandbags, so the Little Devils couldn't see him at all.
Tie Zhu was waiting for the enemy to step out of the darkness. The bonfire in front was something he had personally built with his men earlier; it was enough to burn until dawn and illuminated the entire street, leaving no visual blind spots.
Moreover, Tie Zhu had received orders to hold this small street until dawn. As long as the enemy did not attack, he was more than willing to avoid engaging in a firefight, allowing the new recruits to gradually adapt to the rhythm of battle.
Otherwise, Tie Zhu feared that these new recruits would be just like he was when he first entered the battlefield in the morning—so scared that they wouldn't even dare to fire their weapons.
However, the enemy did not have much patience. After observing for about ten minutes without any artillery fire coming from above, several enemy soldiers crouched low and slowly emerged from the darkness of the building.
They kept their waists very low while holding a Type 38 rifle that was taller than they were, stepping one by one into the area illuminated by the firelight.
