"Squad Leader, I... I can't see!" a new recruit shouted at Tie Zhu after the shelling.
"Night blindness!" Tie Zhu immediately thought of this condition; he had learned about it from Shunliu Brother before.
Tie Zhu patted the recruit's shoulder. "Don't be afraid. Can you see my hand?"
Li De nodded. "I can see it, Squad Leader, I'm not blind!"
Seeing that the recruit could still see a little, Lin Qing breathed a sigh of relief. His condition wasn't too severe; at least he could still see something. He then pointed to a distant firelight. "Can you see over there?"
Li De squinted and stared intently into the distance, finally nodding. "I can see where there's fire, but in places without fire, I... I can't see anything at all."
Tie Zhu nodded, patted his shoulder, and motioned for him to bend down.
"Don't be afraid; it's just night blindness. You'll be fine. Didn't you know you couldn't see well at night before?"
Li De shook his head. "I was fine at home before, and there was no problem during basic training. It's just now; I... I don't know what's happening!"
"Don't be nervous; it must be because you're anxious. Squad Leader, I've seen this happen before when someone got nervous, and that's what triggered it. Just sit down and rest for a bit; it'll be okay. The enemy won't come up here!" Zhou Wei approached, looked at Li De's condition, and spoke softly.
After seeing Li De sit down, Tie Zhu walked aside with a worried expression and closed his eyes without saying anything.
Night blindness wasn't just Li De's issue; the other soldiers in the squad likely had it too, just not as severely as Li De.
Tie Zhu had experienced this before, but later Shunliu Brother stole some food from the cooks for him every day. After gradually getting enough nutrition, he became a bit lighter.
However, now at night, Tie Zhu found it somewhat blurry to see.
Zhou Wei walked up to Tie Zhu and handed him a wrinkled Hardman: "Squad Leader, don't worry. He's just too nervous!"
Tie Zhu took the cigarette, fished out a match from his pocket, struck it gently, and the faint flame slowly flickered to life. Zhou Wei leaned in to light his cigarette with it.
The two of them huddled around the small flame, igniting their cigarettes.
"You know some medicine? Cough, cough..." Tie Zhu took a deep drag of the cigarette, feeling a bit unaccustomed, and coughed twice.
Zhou Wei was an old smoker; he nodded, took a deep puff, then blew out a smoke ring before slowly speaking: "Yeah, I know a little. I learned a bit before!"
"You studied medicine, yet you're just a soldier? I'll go talk to Company Commander and see if I can get you assigned to the rear; the unit is short on doctors right now."
Zhou Wei shook his head: "Squad Leader, I want to fight the Japanese. I don't want to hide in the back; I want to kill them with my own hands!"
As Zhou Wei spoke, the veins on his forehead began to bulge. Even though there wasn't much light around, Tie Zhu could still feel his inner anger.
"Zhou Wei, I can't preach grand principles, but how many Japanese can you kill by yourself? If you save two wounded soldiers, won't those two be able to kill more Japanese than you could alone?"
"Squad Leader, I..."
"Don't speak, let me talk." Tie Zhu interrupted Zhou Wei, placing a hand on Zhou Wei's shoulder. "Listen to the squad leader, go to the back and save a couple of people. It's more useful than killing three enemies!"
"Squad leader, but—"
"No buts. I'm taking you there right now, follow me."
