When Tie Zhu opened his eyes again, he found himself back in the room where he had just been hiding.
"Why is this happening? Why, why!"
He pounded his head with his fists, lying on the ground and wailing, wondering why he couldn't even die. He just wanted to accompany Shunliu Brother.
"Why, why!"
Lying on his back, Tie Zhu stared blankly at the ceiling, questioning why he wanted to die but couldn't. Why was it like this? Was heaven playing a joke on him?
Tie Zhu lay on the ground with vacant eyes, unsure of what was happening to him now, whether he was still dreaming, and why he returned to the past every time he died!
"Why! Why!" Tie Zhu muttered to himself, his quiet voice accompanied by soft sobs.
After lying on the ground for several minutes, Tie Zhu suddenly jumped up: "No, no, I can't do this. I need to avenge Shunliu Brother! I can't just ignore it when Shunliu Brother's body is outside!"
"But what should I do? The Japanese Soldier outside has such precise aim; I don't even know where he is!"
"There must be a way, there must be a way. Since heaven won't let me die, it must mean I'm meant to avenge Shunliu Brother! It has to be that way!"
"How can I get close to that Japanese Soldier? Where exactly is he?"
Tie Zhu sat on the ground, struggling in his mind as thoughts raced through his head.
"What should I do? Should I rush out again? It seems like I did that before!"
Holding his gun, Tie Zhu was about to head outside when he paused at the door.
"No, Shunliu Brother is right in front; I can't do this!"
Just thinking about Shunliu Brother made Tie Zhu's tears well up again. If he followed the same route and saw Shunliu Brother's body, he feared he wouldn't be able to control his emotions once more.
Tie Zhu did not realize that he had unknowingly begun to fully believe everything he saw in his so-called "dream."
He retracted his foot, which was ready to rush out, and started to examine the room. He had been too anxious earlier, only thinking about exiting through the front door without taking the time to observe the space.
It was an ordinary small house facing the street, two stories high. The first floor was empty except for some discarded trash, and the ground was covered in dust, indicating it had been abandoned for a long time and was no longer inhabited.
"Window!"
While surveying the room, Tie Zhu suddenly brightened up. Why hadn't he thought of escaping through the window? Then he could just circle around behind that Japanese Soldier.
Annoyed with himself for not thinking of such a simple solution, he wondered why he had been foolishly planning to rush out and block the Japanese Soldier's line of fire.
With a plan in mind, Tie Zhu grabbed his gun and walked over to the window, gently pushing it open.
"Cough cough, cough cough, cough cough!"
As the window opened, a cloud of dust billowed out, filling Tie Zhu's mouth and covering his face with a thick layer of grime.
Outside was a narrow alleyway that seemed very deep and unknown. Tie Zhu peeked out, looking left and right; the Japanese Soldier did not fire, indicating that this position was out of his line of sight.
Silently noting that this spot was not visible to the Japanese Soldier, Tie Zhu flipped over and slipped into the small alley behind the house.
The alley was narrow enough for only two people to walk side by side. The cobblestone path twisted and turned into the distance. Tie Zhu squinted as he examined the path, faintly seeing an exit in the far distance.
Holding his Rifle, Tie Zhu cautiously moved forward, taking very light steps and keeping his voice low.
Even so, in the eerily quiet alley, there were still slight echoes.
"Drip, drip, drip, drip, drip!"
A dark cloud slowly drifted across the sky, bringing raindrops that fell from above onto the rooftops of buildings, creating a crisp dripping sound that was quite rhythmic.
Tie Zhu stood in the middle of the alley, with bright sunshine on his left and a light rain starting to fall on his right.
Caught off guard by this strange phenomenon, Tie Zhu scratched his head and said, "I was wondering why it wasn't raining earlier. So it stopped right here!"
Like a curious child, Tie Zhu jumped to the left, standing under the sunlight, then jumped to the right, getting pelted by raindrops.
"This is so much fun! Shunliu Brother would love it here!"
Tie Zhu paused his movements and stood still, slowly looking to his left. "Shunliu Brother should be lying not far from here! Don't worry, Shunliu Brother, I will avenge you!"
Tightly gripping the weapon in his hand, Tie Zhu reluctantly withdrew his gaze and continued moving forward.
Ruined Building
The Japanese Sniper slowly observed the surroundings, his eyes scanning the entire town like a filter. Wherever he could see, his mechanical-like eyes swept over.
"Mouse, so you were hiding in this place!"
The Japanese Sniper spotted Tie Zhu slowly walking forward in the alley. A smile crept onto his face as he aimed his gun at him.
"Goodbye, Mouse!"
Gently pulling the trigger, a bullet roared out of the barrel and struck Tie Zhu in the head.
Bang!
A clear sound echoed again as Tie Zhu felt a sharp pain in his head. Everything went dark; it hurt—really hurt!
Tie Zhu opened his eyes once more and found himself back in the room where he had just been hiding.
"Am I really unable to die?"
Looking at his unscathed self, Tie Zhu stood there in a daze, motionless.
"Why can't I die? This can't be a dream! Why is it that every time I die, I come back to life perfectly fine? If once is a dream, twice is a dream, then what about three times, four times? I can't even remember how many times I've 'lived' today!"
"Am I a monster? Why can't I die!"
Tie Zhu sat on the ground, holding his head. He was extremely panicked; he had realized something was wrong with him. He wanted to talk to someone but was too afraid to do so.
"I'm not a monster, I'm not! There must be something wrong, it has to be like that!"
"What should I do? What should I do!"
In his mind, two little figures kept whispering in Tie Zhu's ear: "Tie Zhu, you are a monster, a thorough monster. You are a demon; only demons can be immortal. You are a demon!"
Another little figure told him: "Tie Zhu, don't be afraid. You are not a demon; you are just a person. Maybe a deity is playing a joke on you, or maybe it's just some kind of joke. Don't be scared!"
Tie Zhu rolled on the ground, holding his head as the voices echoed in his mind: You are a demon, I am not a demon!
"Ah! I'm human, I'm not a demon!"
Tie Zhu knelt on the ground, holding his head and crying out in pain.
