Wang Shunliu hid at the counter for a while, and the fire from the Japanese Soldier had stopped.
Slowly approaching the entrance on the first floor again, holding his gun, Wang Shunliu carefully recalled the layout of the Japanese Soldier positions in his mind.
"There is a machine gun in the middle position. I just killed the machine gunner, and now it should be the ammunition loader operating it!"
Wang Shunliu looked outside at the positions, contemplating a suitable shooting spot.
Just as he turned around and was about to raise his gun, bullets from the Japanese Soldier in the corner building came flying in.
Wang Shunliu hurriedly ducked back inside, feeling blood on his shoulder; a bullet had just hit Tie Zhu's shoulder.
"Ah!" Tie Zhu gasped sharply, leaning against the door and covering his shoulder with his hand.
It hurt, very much. The bullet from the Japanese Type 38 had strong penetration power, usually causing penetrating injuries unless it hit a bone and lodged inside.
Wang Shunliu gritted his teeth and slowly walked to the counter beside the bureau. He pulled out a piece of white cloth from the messy ground and wrapped it around his shoulder haphazardly.
The blood quickly soaked through the white cloth, and sweat beads formed on Wang Shunliu's forehead as his face turned pale.
On both sides of the corner building,
Kuomintang Soldiers were slowly approaching from both sides of the corner building.
The Japanese Soldier's attention was drawn to Wang Shunliu and had not noticed the Nationalist Army closing in from both sides.
"Regimental Commander, you stay back here. Don't rush too far forward; it's dangerous here!"
The Second Battalion Commander said to Hu Lian while running, occasionally pulling Hu Lian back to prevent him from getting too close.
Hu Lian forcefully shook off the Second Battalion Commander’s hand: “Li Erlengzi, let go of me! If you stop me again, I swear I’ll take you down!”
“Regimental Commander, Regimental Commander, even if you take me down, I can’t let you charge ahead! Someone, stay by the Regimental Commander’s side and don’t let him rush too fast. The rest of you, follow me!”
Two soldiers stopped and blocked Hu Lian’s path, protecting him behind them.
Inside the Corner Building, the Japanese soldiers had already noticed the soldiers charging from both sides.
Inside the building
“The Chinese are charging! Machine Gun fire! Suppress their fire quickly!”
A Japanese Sergeant fired at a nearby Kuomintang Soldier with his Type 38 Rifle. The Japanese Army soldiers were very accurate; three Kuomintang Soldiers fell after the first round of fire.
“Quick, quick, quick! Rush over there!”
The Second Battalion Commander shouted loudly while holding his gun. The first round of Japanese fire was quite weak compared to what he had seen before, which made him believe they could successfully take the Corner Building.
On the second floor of the Japanese Corner Building, a Machine Gunner frantically adjusted the Heavy Machine Gun's muzzle, preparing to suppress the Kuomintang Soldiers with fire.
“Fire! Fire!”
The Japanese Sergeant shouted crazily, continuously firing his Type 38 Rifle.
“Tat tat tat...”
The Japanese Machine Gun began to fire wildly, and the Kuomintang Soldiers charging from the left were immediately suppressed and couldn’t lift their heads.
“Is there anyone who can take out that Machine Gun?”
The Second Battalion Commander lay on the ground, spitting out dirt, as the Japanese reacted, and the Nationalist Army was once again suppressed and unable to move.
Hu Lian pushed aside the soldier blocking his way and charged forward, bullets striking the ground beside him, kicking up dust.
“Li Erlengzi, why are you lying here playing dead? Are you a target for the Japanese? Follow me!”
The Second Battalion Commander quickly grabbed Hu Lian: “Regimental Commander, there’s an open area of over ten meters ahead with no cover. The Japanese soldiers still have machine guns covering us. Charging in headfirst is no different from seeking death.”
Wang Shunliu gritted his teeth and slowly supported himself to walk to the door again.
“Three!”
“Two!”
“One!”
Wang Shunliu silently counted in his heart, enduring the pain as he tightly gripped his weapon. He turned and stepped out of the doorway, firing a shot at the nearby Corner Building.
“Bang, bang!”
In the chaotic battlefield, the two gunshots rang out clearly, piercing through the entire battlefield and reaching Tie Zhu's ears as well as Wang Shunliu's.
Wang Shunliu hit a Japanese machine gunner with one shot, and the fire from the Japanese soldiers immediately ceased. Without machine gun support, the Kuomintang soldiers were able to raise their heads and continue their charge forward.
“Quick, quick, quick! Move up!” The Second Battalion Commander raised his rifle and jumped up, leading the charge.
“Prepare for close combat!”
A Japanese sergeant drew his bayonet and fixed it onto his Type 38 rifle, ready to engage in hand-to-hand combat with the Kuomintang soldiers.
Bureau Outside
Wang Shunliu collapsed onto the ground, blood pooling around him as a bullet struck the back of his head.
Hidden in the Ruined Building, a Japanese Soldier slowly pulled back the bolt of his rifle, softly uttering a number: "32!"
The Nationalist Army had already rushed to the base of the Corner Building, entering the shooting blind spot of the Japanese Soldier.
"33!"
The Japanese Soldier gently squeezed the trigger, and a Kuomintang Soldier fell to the ground in response.
Inside the Ruined Building, the Japanese Soldier pulled back the bolt once more, increasing the number he spoke.
Hu Lian hesitantly walked over to the body of the Kuomintang Soldier.
"Get down, quickly move inside!"
A bullet struck beside Hu Lian, who swiftly dove into the Corner Building, signaling to those nearby.
The Second Battalion Commander looked at Hu Lian in confusion: "Regimental Commander, what’s going on?"
"There’s a Japanese sniper behind us. The soldier at the entrance was shot from behind. We must have a skilled marksman or sniper from the Japanese Army behind us!"
"Regimental Commander, how do you know this?"
Hu Lian pointed to his head: "Think more. I was right next to the soldier when he was hit. I didn't hear a gunshot, and we should be quite far away. If it were a marksman, they couldn't shoot that accurately; it must be a professional Sniper Rifle! Also, judging by the wound, it shouldn't be a Japanese Type 38 Rifle."
The Second Battalion Commander nodded in partial understanding: "Regimental Commander, what should we do now?"
"Take down the Small Building and inform the soldiers to keep their heads down. Be careful of the Sniper."
"Received!"
A soldier from the Nationalist Army had just rushed into the room when a bullet struck him in the back of the head, causing him to fall forward.
"Regimental Commander, this won't work! When we stand up, we're just targets for the Japanese! What should we do?"
Hu Lian glanced outside and slowly crawled to the fallen Kuomintang Soldier. He pulled out two Grenades from his body: "You all take care of the inside. I'll figure out how to deal with that sniper outside! Give me a few Grenades."
"Oh, okay!"
Several soldiers carefully handed over all the Grenades they had on them to Hu Lian, keeping their heads low in fear of being shot in the head by a Japanese Soldier.
Hu Lian cautiously raised his head to look outside and threw a Grenade onto the open ground outside.
The explosion kicked up a cloud of dust, briefly obscuring a small area at the entrance.
"Be careful!"
Hu Lian warned the few soldiers preparing to rush upstairs as he picked up some debris from the ground and threw it outside.
