"Ms. Chen Huiying, it's your turn." A young nurse came out to call my name.
I stood up and walked towards the nurse, with my mother-in-law and husband reluctantly following behind.
Once we entered the consultation room, the doctor asked me, "When was the last time you had intercourse?"
I glanced at my husband and replied, "Three days ago."
The doctor continued, "How many years have you been married? Have you never conceived a child?"
I pressed my lips together and said, "It's been two years, and no, I haven't."
"Have you had an abortion before?" the doctor inquired.
"No..." I hadn't finished my sentence when my mother-in-law interrupted.
"I told you, how could she not get pregnant? This little vixen must be out there seducing men," my mother-in-law said as she pinched my ear, gritting her teeth. "Tell me, how many times have you had an abortion?!"
"I haven't..." I endured the pain; for these two years, I hadn't given them a grandchild, and I felt embarrassed, so I kept yielding.
"Family members, please refrain from interfering," the doctor said sternly.
Ignoring him, my mother-in-law raised her voice: "I'm telling you, this shameless woman loves to seduce men; she must have had an abortion."
"Be quiet! I'm the doctor here, not you!" the doctor retorted, raising his eyebrows.
My mother-in-law sulked into silence but muttered under her breath, "Shameless little vixen, even trying to seduce the doctor."
The doctor shot her a glance before turning to me and saying, "Go take a urine test."
"Okay," I replied as I took the urine cup he handed me.
"You need to do one too," the doctor added as he handed a male cup to my husband.
"My son can't possibly..." My mother-in-law tried to speak again but was silenced by a glare from the doctor.
I went into the restroom and finished up before coming out to find my husband waiting for me at the door.
I was taken aback for a moment and asked, "Why are you standing here? Are you done?"
He nodded and after a moment of contemplation, he looked up and said, "Hui Ying, if you really can't have children, it's okay."
I smiled slightly, feeling that my husband still cared about me. I replied, "I know."
My husband walked towards the consultation room without saying a word, and I followed him. I handed the urine cup to the doctor, feeling a bit embarrassed and lowering my head slightly.
The doctor took it and said calmly, "We can only provide results for one person today. Who do you want to check first?"
I glanced at my husband, who was staring at the floor, then looked at my mother-in-law. She rolled her eyes and said, "What are you waiting for? Don't you know to check yourself first?"
I pressed my lips together and replied hoarsely, "Let's check mine first."
The doctor nodded and said, "Leave a phone number, and we'll notify you when your husband's results are ready."
"Okay," I nodded like a little chick pecking at grains.
My mother-in-law grinned and asked the doctor, "If we don't check my son’s, can we get half of the money back?"
The doctor remained silent, but the nurse standing nearby couldn't hold back any longer and bluntly said, "Do you think this hospital is yours?"
The doctor handed my urine cup to the nurse and said to her, "Alright Jiaqi, take this to the lab for testing."
Jiaqi pouted and replied, "Got it."
She really was just a young girl; I smiled and shook my head as Jiaqi turned to my husband and said, "Bring your cup along and come with me."
My husband shoved his urine cup into my hands and said, "Wife, I have something to take care of. Can you help me deliver this?"
"What... something?" I started to ask.
Before I could finish my sentence, my husband hurriedly pulled my mother-in-law away. I awkwardly looked at Jiaqi, who smiled at me and said, "It's okay; you can come with me too."
I thanked her with a slight bow and walked out with Jiaqi. Just as we exited the consultation room, Jiaqi indignantly said to me, "Sister, as a healthcare worker, I shouldn't interfere in your family matters, but I have to be honest: your husband definitely has issues!"
"What do you mean?" I asked in surprise.
"When you and your husband went out earlier, your mother-in-law kept insisting that he has no problems and that there are plenty of women willing to have children with him."
"Well, that's just how my mother-in-law is; don’t take it to heart," I felt a bit embarrassed but thought it didn’t necessarily indicate infidelity on my husband's part.
"Think about it: under what circumstances can you be sure that a man has fertility?" Jiaqi pressed.
I thought for a moment and replied, "He has children?"
Jiaqi looked serious as she said, "Exactly! How can your mother-in-law be so sure? That woman might already be pregnant! You don’t want to be taken advantage of while counting someone else’s money!"
Suddenly, I recalled the strange ringtone of my husband's phone and the sound of my mother-in-law excitedly saying, "Is it happening?!" My heart trembled involuntarily.
I worked hard to steady my mindset, took a deep breath, and said to Jiaqi, "Okay, I understand. I'll be careful."
