When the man spoke, a look of happiness and contentment spread across his honest face, and the corners of his mouth lifted gently, making the wrinkles on his face appear less pronounced.
Song Pearl was drawn in by something the man said.
"Is it true that Ani had a problem with her mind, often resorting to violence, and hasn't shown up since coming here?" she asked.
"Yes, after coming to the mountain, she was just like any normal person, except sometimes her words are hard to understand. You saw it just now; she invited you to my house for dinner, right?"
"Yes. How did you know?"
"She invites every stranger to my house for dinner," the man chuckled. "She is equally warm towards people and animals. The only difference now is that she often talks to Animals. Even if an ant crawls by, if she sees it, she'll talk to it!"
The man had a lot to say about Ani, and Song Pearl had to interrupt him.
"When did you bring Ani up the mountain?"
Seeing Song Pearl's serious expression while asking the question made the man realize that she was his boss. He had brought family members to work and turned the dormitory into his home; he worried that perhaps his boss was already angry. He had been so caught up in his own happiness that he forgot her identity.
"It was when you sent that snake over," the man replied.
"Are you sure?" Song Pearl stared at him, seemingly unable to believe he could remember so clearly.
"Yes, I remember very well. That night I put the snake in the pond and went home because I was a bit worried about leaving Ani locked in the dormitory. So I left in a hurry… When I opened the door to the dormitory, Ani lunged at me fiercely. She can be quite aggressive when she loses control, but she's not as strong as I am. When I tried to grab her hand to tie her up, she suddenly quieted down and stared blankly behind me. I turned around and saw Orochimaru had followed me without me noticing. I was startled… That was when I realized that although Ani seemed foolish, she had a gift for raising animals..."
"This snake?" Song Pearl's gaze fell on the snake's massive body. She wondered if it could still transform back into a light and agile ring shape.
That girl’s mind wasn’t normal; after seeing the snake, she seemed fine again.
Once, her mind had been injured when she encountered a demon. That voice guided her to become a normal person...
Was the demon still around? Her gaze fixed on the coiled snake in the cage.
"When did you start keeping it in a cage?"
"Just now, I was worried it would get lost and I wouldn't know how to explain..." the man said, lowering his head.
Song Pearl glanced at him and said nothing more. She took out her phone and dialed Qing Wenyu's number. By now, she had gotten used to thinking of him first whenever there was a problem, without considering whether he had the time.
"Come pick me up at Ecological Aquaculture Farm. I'm at Back Mountain Snake Garden," she stated directly as soon as the call connected.
"What? You're not staying overnight on the mountain?" Qing Wenyu replied without much surprise, asking back.
"Yes, after you come over, there's something I need your help with."
Qing Wenyu was a bit surprised; it wasn't often that Song Pearl asked him for help.
It was already dark, but the road to the Resort was brightly lit. However, there weren't many pedestrians or tourists around. Soon, Qing Wenyu's car arrived along the designated route and stopped at the entrance of the Snake Garden.
"Come over!" Song Pearl called out as she heard the horn.
The male Keeper awkwardly ran to the entrance to guide Qing Wenyu, and although there were lights and not many snakes in the Snake Garden, it was his duty as a staff member to lead visitors.
Qing Wenyu furrowed his brows tightly, staring straight at the back of the Keeper as he approached Song Pearl.
He wasn't particularly brave but had a kind of fear and aversion towards snakes. It wasn't that he couldn't look; it was just that looking made him uncomfortable, and he would faint before even feeling scared.
"You can go back to your dorm and check on your wife!" Song Pearl instructed the Keeper. "We'll take this snake away shortly; you don't need to wait."
"This... I think I'll wait until you close the door before leaving!" The Keeper stood still, not moving.
"No need for that trouble. Look, there aren't many snakes here; we'll just close the door when we leave. You don't have to come over," Song Pearl urged a bit impatiently.
"Are you saying you don't want me to do my job anymore?" The man suddenly became agitated, watching Song Pearl with trembling lips.
"No..." Song Pearl hadn't expected him to be so sensitive and hurriedly explained, "You can come after you've eaten. As long as this place isn't closed, you don't have to leave."
"That's great! Then I'll head out first!" The man happily ran away.
"What do you want me to do?" Qing Wenyu stood next to Song Pearl, trying his best to keep his gaze fixed on her face and not look elsewhere.
He knew how much effort he had put in to adapt for her. His feelings for her had begun on this mountain.
Song Pearl's attention was focused on the snake in the cage.
"You, go touch it and see if it can change!" Song Pearl pointed at the cage and looked at Qing Wenyu.
"Me touch it? Haven't I already touched it?" Qing Wenyu frowned. The thought of touching a snake made him feel nauseous; enduring this long was already his limit.
"Yes! Touch it again and give it a try!" Song Pearl looked at Qing Wenyu seriously. "Don't you remember? It was originally a ring on my finger, just a pet. It only became this big after you touched it. Now, please touch it back to its original form!"
"Are you kidding?" Qing Wenyu took a step back. "I don't have that kind of ability; you do it yourself!"
He refused.
"No." Song Pearl grabbed Qing Wenyu's hand. "Don't be such a coward; it's just a touch. Maybe you'll hit the right button and it will change back!"
Qing Wenyu didn't expect Song Pearl to pull so hard. Before he could resist, their hands landed on the top of the snake's head. He felt his heart skip a beat; perhaps the softness and slickness of the snake made his fingers tingle, leaving his mind blank.
It's over, I'm going to faint again!
That was his last thought.
Song Pearl didn't expect this tall man to faint so easily; was it really that strange? Last time, he had helped her bring this snake in...
She quickly supported Qing Wenyu's leaning body to prevent him from falling into the nearby concrete pool. If he saw a snake next to his head while awake, he would definitely faint again.
She still needed him to pull her back!
As Song Pearl held onto Qing Wenyu, her peripheral vision caught sight of the snake changing. It gradually transformed until it became as large as a blade of grass and then stopped moving.
Indeed, there was a change! If this wasn't artificial but naturally formed, she wouldn't believe it either.
Song Pearl freed one hand, wanting to pinch this grass-like thing.
“Song Pearl”
Suddenly, a voice rang in her ear. This childish voice was very familiar and warm.
“Yao!” Song Pearl felt a flash of light before her eyes.
Yao, really, there are indeed Yao in this world; it wasn't a dream or something she imagined. Yao is a real existence.
“Song Pearl, although I am trapped, it’s quite worth it that you got married. Congratulations, you have completed your reincarnation mission.”
“Yao, you really are a Yao!” Song Pearl looked at the thing pinched between her fingers.
“Of course I am a Yao! It’s just that I encountered someone who captures Yao recently and got caught without time to say goodbye! Thank you for thinking of coming to rescue me; you have a good heart!”
On the green leaf was a pointed head, with two black sesame-like eyes sparkling on either side.
“Who is the one capturing Yao?”
“Of course it’s that Zhang Yunye!” Yao sighed, “I had been carefully avoiding him, but who knew I would still be discovered. Just when I thought there was no hope for survival, you brought me the dawn of hope. Well done!”
“The dawn of hope?” Song Pearl laughed, holding it up to Qing Wenyu's nose and said, “It was this person who saved you! I pinched you so many times before and couldn’t extract your essence; who knew that as soon as he made a move, you revealed your true form!”
“Uh… of course my master has the ability to rescue me!” Yao muttered.
“If you weren’t a snake, your master would be even happier!” Song Pearl smirked; she hadn’t felt this good in a long time.
“I can only talk to Yao; my master is human and cannot see me~” Yao reiterated.
“Am I still a Yao? But stubbornly I am not a Yao!”
“Stubbornly you are not a Yao; he still thinks I’m an Electronic Pet… how can you believe him!” Yao gritted its teeth.
"I believe in you too~"
Song Pearl fell silent when asked by the demon. How could she trust Zhang Yunye's words so completely? She had no doubt about any of his statements, even if those words were completely wrong.
The demon and Zhang Yunye were inherently contradictory.
"Is the Keeper's wife the one you helped heal?" Song Pearl recalled the bright-eyed, sweet-smiling Ani.
"Yes! I felt a connection with that child; she was a bit silly and reminded me of you back then, so I helped her out."
"How did you do it? Weren't you captured by the Monster Tamer? How could you still save someone?"
"Are you looking for loopholes in my words? Don't believe me?" The demon blinked its eyes in a pitiful manner, but in the darkness, it was hard to tell whether its eyes were blinking or not.
"No, I'm just curious!" Song Pearl replied.
"Ha, congratulations, Song Pearl, you've become smarter and learned to think critically!" The demon's voice was filled with admiration. "Have you forgotten what this place is called? It's the Ecological Aquaculture Park! Have you forgotten the original intention of introducing these animals? It was to help people! In fact, every animal in this Ecological Aquaculture Farm has a special function; they aren't just meant for the dinner table. Isn't this what you've been researching and developing all along?"
