"Who... is there?" the member of the Flame Mercenary Corps barked, his communicator flickering with an eerie light in the darkness.
My heart raced, and my body tensed up as if jolted by electricity.
Damn it, just when I thought things couldn't get worse, they did.
"What do you want?!" he lunged at me, moving like lightning, a glint of cold steel flashing in his hand—it was a drawn dagger.
I didn't have time to think. Instinctively, I sidestepped and kicked towards his knee.
"Bang!"
He reacted swiftly, twisting away from my attack, but his body still staggered slightly.
In that split second, my mind raced to devise a plan.
This traitor was no pushover. If I got entangled with him here, it would surely attract more members of the Flame Mercenary Corps, and then I'd be trapped with no way out.
"Hmph, it's really you!" he sneered, thrusting the dagger at me again, aiming for my throat.
I gritted my teeth and charged forward instead of retreating, heading straight for the blade.
"Die!"
A fierce glint flashed in his eyes as if he could already envision me falling to the ground with a slashed throat.
However, what he didn't anticipate was that my intention in charging at him wasn't to fight head-on.
I simply wanted to use this opportunity to draw him outside the base.
As long as I could distance myself from the crowd, I'd have more room to maneuver.
"You... have you lost your mind?!" He clearly didn't expect me to act this way, his movements momentarily frozen.
Now's my chance!
I surged forward, delivering a sharp elbow strike to his abdomen.
He let out a muffled groan, his body curling up like a shrimp, and the dagger slipped from his grasp, clattering to the ground.
Seizing the opportunity, I snatched the dagger and spun around, pressing the blade against his throat.
"Speak! What is your true intention?!" I demanded coldly, my voice betraying a hint of tremor.
Damn it, playing tough is indeed an art; I almost scared myself to death.
His face turned pale, eyes filled with terror.
"I... I..."
Just as he stammered, a louder explosion suddenly echoed from afar.
Boom!
The deafening blast shook the entire base.
"This is bad! It's the main entrance!" His expression shifted drastically, clearly caught off guard by how quickly the enemy had breached our defenses.
A wave of dread washed over me; damn it, everything was falling apart now.
It seemed the opposing forces were eager to strike, not even bothering to deal with the traitor among us.
"You! Come with me!" I grabbed him and rushed toward the entrance of the base without hesitation.
Since he knew so much, he still had some value.
Halfway there, I suddenly spotted Zhong Dali flailing around like a headless fly, mumbling something like "Wow! Wow!"
I could have smashed him with a brick; he was nothing but a walking troublemaker.
"Zhong Dali! Over here!" I shouted.
Hearing my voice, he froze for a moment before scampering over.
"Wei Ge! Are you okay? I heard explosions!" His simple face was filled with worry.
I rolled my eyes, too lazy to waste words with him.
"Stop talking! Hurry up and follow me! The enemy has breached the defenses!"
The three of us quickened our pace, and when we reached the main entrance of the base, the sight before me made me gasp.
Dozens of mutated zombies were violently assaulting the defenses. Their bodies were several times stronger than ordinary zombies, with some even sporting sharp bone spikes and heavy shells.
Members of the Flame Mercenary Group were fighting desperately, but it was clear they were struggling.
"Damn it! Are these bastards insane?!" Strongman Leader roared, his face smeared with blood.
I focused my gaze and saw Xie Yutong in the crowd, watching coldly with a hint of mockery at the corner of her mouth.
A chill ran down my spine; it was indeed her!
This woman is even more terrifying than a zombie.
“Wei Na! What should we do?” Zhong Dali asked anxiously.
I took a deep breath, trying to calm myself down.
Now is not the time to panic; the more chaotic it gets, the clearer we need to think.
“Listen! Zhong Dali, you’re in charge of the frontal assault, draw their fire!” I quickly issued my command.
“Me?” Zhong Dali was taken aback. “Wei Ge, how can I do it alone?”
“Just go! No time for excuses!” I snapped back at him.
He looked aggrieved but still charged forward obediently.
“Wow!” he shouted as he slammed into a mutated zombie.
The zombie was knocked back, crashing into a group of others.
I couldn’t help but chuckle to myself; this guy may not be the brightest, but he sure has strength.
“Mysterious Girl, you’re responsible for flanking support. Take out those mutated zombies attacking from a distance!” I turned to the Mysterious Girl.
She nodded, said nothing more, and in a flash, disappeared into the darkness.
“As for you,” I looked at the captive from the Flame Mercenary Corps, “tell me their weaknesses!”
He trembled, his eyes filled with terror.
"I... I don't know!"
"Don't know?" I scoffed, lightly dragging the dagger across his neck. "Then let me make you know!"
Feeling the sharp sting on his neck, he finally broke down.
"I'll tell you! I'll tell you! They... they are most afraid of... light!"
"Light?" A flicker of realization sparked within me; it was exactly as I had suspected.
These mutated zombies, though physically strong, were extremely sensitive to light.
This was indeed their fatal weakness!
"Very good!" I grinned, a sinister smile spreading across my face. "You are quite valuable!"
As I directed Zhong Dali and the mysterious girl, I took advantage of the weakness provided by the Flame Mercenary Corps, continuously attacking the mutated zombies.
Zhong Dali charged through like a bulldozer, leaving no zombie unscathed in his wake.
The mysterious girl was like the Grim Reaper, each shot she took precisely hitting the zombies' vital points.
However, just as we began to gain the upper hand, an unexpected event occurred.
The Flame Mercenary Corps member I had captured suddenly broke free from my restraints and lunged at me.
"Die! Wei Na!" His eyes were filled with madness as he thrust the dagger fiercely toward my chest.
I was taken aback; damn it, this guy had been holding back!
At that critical moment, a figure suddenly appeared before me.
"Bang!"
With a dull thud, the Flame Mercenary Corps member was kicked away, crashing heavily to the ground.
I focused my gaze and was shocked to see it was the Strongman Leader!
His face was ashen, and his eyes burned with fury.
"You bastard! How dare you betray me!" he roared, rushing over to stomp the Flame Mercenary Corps member into the ground.
"Speak! Who sent you?!"
The Flame Mercenary Corps member spat blood but clenched his teeth tightly, refusing to utter a word.
"Looking for death!" A glint of ruthlessness flashed in the Strongman Leader's eyes as he raised his foot.
"Wait!" I suddenly called out, "Don't kill him!"
The Strongman Leader froze, looking at me in confusion.
"I have a way to make him talk!" I said coldly.
After a moment of hesitation, the Strongman Leader finally nodded.
I approached the Flame Mercenary Corps member, crouched down, and whispered in his ear, "Do you know? I have a special ability... that can make your life worse than death..."
Terror filled his eyes as his body began to tremble violently.
"You... what do you want?"
I didn't answer; I merely smiled mysteriously and pulled a bottle from my pocket.
"This is... the latest variant of the Soul Devouring Virus... Can you guess what it will turn you into?"
Upon seeing the contents of the bottle, his face turned pale instantly.
"No! Don't!" he screamed in a heart-wrenching cry.
"Tell me! Who sent you?" I asked coldly.
He finally broke down, spilling everything like bamboo shoots falling from a tube.
It turned out he was an undercover agent sent by Qin Baye!
Qin Baye, the warlord of the apocalypse, the ruler of the technological city known as the Iron Fortress.
His goal was to swallow up all survivor factions!
A chill ran through me; Qin Baye was indeed not to be underestimated.
Just then, a series of even more intense explosions echoed from afar.
"This is bad! Other factions are attacking!" The Strongman Leader's expression changed drastically.
I thought to myself that it seemed Qin Baye wanted to take advantage of this zombie tide to eliminate all forces that refused to submit to him in one fell swoop.
"Everyone, pay attention! The enemy is not just zombies!" I shouted, "There are other survivor factions too!"
Everyone's expression changed upon hearing this.
Now, things had gotten serious.
“Qin Baye! You bastard!” the Strongman Leader roared, commanding the Flame Mercenary Corps to charge forward.
However, the enemy outnumbered us significantly and their weapons were far more advanced.
Our defenses were quickly breached.
“Wei Ge! We can't hold on any longer!” Zhong Dali shouted, already wounded but still fighting desperately.
I felt a surge of anxiety; at this rate, we would all die here.
In that critical moment, a sudden idea struck me.
A… absurd and crazy idea.
“Listen up! Everyone!” I shouted, my voice cutting through the chaos of the battlefield. “Let’s play a game!”
Everyone froze at my words, looking at me in confusion.
I grinned widely, a sly smile creeping onto my face.
“A… hilarious… Battle of Wits!”
