As Jiang Chen looked at the stone coffin, its lid suddenly stirred. His expression shifted slightly, realizing that something was indeed inside. The lid moved slowly and gently, as if reluctant to disturb him. Since it did not wish to alert him, Jiang Chen pretended to be unaware and decided to see what lay within.
He turned his head away and approached the pile of gold in front of him. Picking up a gold brick, he observed the various shapes and sizes scattered around, including many gold ingots that, judging by the official seals on them, likely belonged to different dynasties.
"Has someone been continuously collecting gold artifacts here?" Jiang Chen pondered quietly, all the while remaining vigilant of his surroundings.
Ye Xiaoying's group had entered with searchlights, relying on their beams to survey the environment. However, for Jiang Chen, the area was as bright as day; he could see every minute detail clearly.
Suddenly, he sensed a change in the water behind him. Jiang Chen spun around and locked eyes with whatever had emerged from the coffin. The creature paused momentarily upon seeing him turn so abruptly, its expression a mix of surprise and uncertainty.
But that hesitation was brief. It lunged at Jiang Chen with incredible speed, wielding a bone fork in its hand. Its eerie blue eyes glimmered like gemstones in the night, exuding a chilling aura that was truly terrifying.
Seeing Jiang Chen standing still, the creature assumed he hadn’t noticed it; after all, humans couldn’t see underwater without light. As it closed in on him, Jiang Chen’s lips curled into a faint smile. This creature resembled a mermaid but was far from beautiful; its face was grotesque like that of a green-faced demon, with sharp fangs bared and a dolphin-like lower body. Most striking were its four arms—two long and two short—each ending in webbed hands resembling those of a frog, clutching its bone fork in a rather comical manner.
This being could barely be classified as a monster on Earth; judging by its appearance, it seemed intelligent—perhaps aside from its looks, it resembled a human in many ways. There was no need for speculation; Ye Xiaoying's disappearance was undoubtedly linked to this creature.
Jiang Chen raised his hand and lightly tapped the water in front of him, sending ripples through it. The water visibly began to freeze before him. The creature’s expression changed dramatically as it charged forward but collided with the ice that spread rapidly, freezing its lower half within the icy block.
The monster screamed and struggled, swinging its bone fork at Jiang Chen while baring its teeth like an enraged monkey, even spitting venom at him.
Initially intending to interrogate it, Jiang Chen reconsidered; after all, this was a monster—what was the point of wasting words? He could simply explore the stone coffin instead.
Ignoring the creature's antics, he moved above the coffin and peered inside. To his surprise, there appeared to be a hidden passage within.
Without hesitation, Jiang Chen crawled into the passageway of the coffin. It was quite narrow at first and showed signs of being man-made but eventually opened up into a fissure at the seabed. After swimming for about ten minutes and covering several miles, he finally spotted light ahead.
