I Donated My Bone Marrow for the White Moonlight and Regretted It 5: Breakup

I lay on the sterile hospital bed, staring blankly at the white ceiling. The side effects of chemotherapy had left me utterly weak, my hair falling out in clumps, and the reflection in the mirror showed a haggard version of myself. 0

When the nurse came in to change my bandages, I heard her softly say, "It's so sad to see someone so young suffering from this illness." I closed my eyes, not wanting to see anyone's sympathetic gaze. The smell of disinfectant in the room was overwhelming; Gu Ting had always hated that scent, frowning every time he visited someone in the hospital, saying it reminded him of death. Ironically, it was now me who was accompanied by death, while he was out there embracing a new life. 0

Suddenly, the door swung open, and a waft of perfume filled the air. I opened my eyes to see Lin Weiwei strutting in, wearing sunglasses and a mask, her high heels clicking confidently against the floor. 0

"Tsk tsk tsk, Anxin sister, you look like neither a person nor a ghost right now," she said as she removed her sunglasses, her eyes full of mockery. "No wonder Ting Ge doesn't like you anymore." 0

I hadn’t expected her to come; instinctively, I tugged at my hospital gown to cover my bald head, but she yanked it away. She covered her mouth with laughter. "Can't even afford a wig? Well, considering that Ting Ge doesn't care about you anymore, it's understandable that you're broke." 0

I clenched my fists, my nails digging into my palms. "Lin Weiwei, did you come here just to mock me?" 0

She raised her voice. "Ting Ge is right; you deserve this. Who told you to seduce him? If it weren't for you, he would have been with me long ago!" 0

"Lin Weiwei!" I weakly retorted, my voice trembling. "You were the one who looked down on him when he was poor and ran off abroad. Now that he's successful, you come back looking for him..." 0

"Shut up!" She sharply interrupted me, a flash of anger in her eyes. "Who do you think you are? Anxin sister, you're pathetic; don't you realize what your status is in Ting Ge's heart?" 0

She leaned closer with a smug grin. "Let me tell you something: you're just a substitute, a joke! Ting Ge has always loved me!" 0

I trembled all over as Lin Weiwei pulled out her phone and dialed Gu Ting's number right in front of me. 0

"Ting Ge," she said sweetly, "I'm at the hospital. Guess who I ran into? Anxin sister! She's really sick and so pitiful." 0

The voice of Gu Ting came through the phone, though I couldn't make out what he was saying, his tone was clearly impatient. 0

After hanging up, Lin Weiwei looked at me arrogantly and said, "Let's see if Ting Ge chooses you or me." 0

Within five minutes, the door to the hospital room was pushed open again. Gu Ting appeared at the entrance, dressed in a sharp suit. He frowned as he looked at Lin Weiwei and said, "Wei Wei, what are you doing here? It's dirty." 0

I lay on the hospital bed, watching the concern in his eyes extinguish the last flicker of hope in my heart. Once upon a time, he had looked at me with that same tenderness, but now that warmth belonged to someone else. 0

"Ting Ge," Lin Weiwei said as she linked her arm with Gu Ting's. "I came to see Anxin sister. She's so pitiful." 0

Gu Ting gently pushed her away, finally directing his gaze at me. I instinctively tugged at the hat I had just put on, fearing he would notice that I had lost all my hair. 0

"It's just a minor cold and you need to be hospitalized," he said coldly, his eyes casually scanning my pale face and the medicine bottles on the bedside table. "You didn't come home that night, right? Wei Wei is just being kind to visit you; don’t be ungrateful." 0

A minor cold? I forced a smile. He didn't even bother to ask why I was hospitalized or how I ended up here. Perhaps in his eyes, my value had been exhausted; I was now merely a nuisance that needed to be dealt with. 0

Watching him protectively hold Lin Weiwei made me suddenly feel very tired. This farce needed to come to an end. 0

"Gu Ting," I took a deep breath. "Let's break up." 0

The room fell silent. 0

Gu Ting froze for a moment before letting out a cold laugh. "Break up? Anxin, stop joking around. I haven't seen Wei Wei in ages; it's only natural for me to spend more time with her. Just take care of yourself and don't think about unnecessary things." 0

"Gu Ting, Lin Weiwei," I closed my eyes, my voice as light as a feather. "I wish you... never part ways." 0

"Since you love each other so much, then be together forever." 0

Gu Ting seemed to sense something; he furrowed his brow and approached the hospital bed. "What do you mean by that?" 0

I didn’t answer, merely gazing quietly out the window. The afterglow of the setting sun spilled onto the floor of the ward, tinting everything a bloody hue. 0

A nurse pushed the door open, preparing to change my dressings. She paused for a moment upon seeing the people in the room. "The patient needs to rest; could the family please step outside for a moment?" 0

"Let’s go, Brother Ting," Lin Weiwei said, linking her arm with Gu Ting's. "Don’t worry about her." 0

I touched my bald scalp and suddenly felt a sense of relief. Perhaps this illness came at just the right time; it took away my hair and also my last lingering attachment to Gu Ting. 0
