After overcoming his inner demons, Su Mu felt rejuvenated. He reignited his passion for alchemy and talismans, and his skills progressed by leaps and bounds. Daoist Xuanji was pleased to see Su Mu's transformation; he knew that Su Mu had truly embarked on the path of cultivation.
One day, a special patient arrived at the Heavenly Mechanism Sect. A lavishly dressed middle-aged woman, accompanied by a pale young man, anxiously knocked on the sect's door.
"Immortal Master, please save my son!" The woman knelt before Daoist Xuanji as soon as she saw him, crying out, "My son has been ill for six months. We have sought help from many doctors, but he shows no signs of improvement. I am heartbroken as I watch him grow weaker by the day!"
Daoist Xuanji quickly helped the woman to her feet. "Please rise, madam, and tell me about your son's condition."
Wiping her tears, she said, "My son's name is Li Yun. Six months ago, he suddenly developed a high fever that wouldn't subside, accompanied by extreme fatigue and loss of appetite. At first, we thought it was just a common cold, but after trying many medicines with no effect, his condition worsened. He began to experience hallucinations, often speaking nonsense and even sleepwalking. In recent days, he hasn't been able to keep even a drop of water down; it seems he is on the brink of death..."
Daoist Xuanji instructed Su Mu to take Li Yun's pulse. As Su Mu placed his fingers on Li Yun's wrist, he carefully sensed the fluctuations in his pulse. He discovered that Li Yun's pulse was erratic—sometimes rapid and sometimes slow, alternating between strong and weak—and there was a chilling energy within him that was steadily eroding his vitality.
"Master, this illness is rather peculiar; it seems like he has fallen victim to some sort of dark magic," Su Mu said softly as he withdrew his hand.
Daoist Xuanji nodded in agreement. "I find this matter suspicious as well. Madam, may I ask if your son has visited any unusual places or come into contact with anything strange recently?"
The woman thought carefully before responding, "A few days ago, Yun went on an adventure with some friends to a mass grave outside the city..."
"A mass grave!" Su Mu and Daoist Xuanji exchanged glances, both understanding the situation clearly. The mass grave was heavily infused with negative energy and was a gathering place for various malevolent spirits; it was highly likely that Li Yun had picked up something unclean there.
"Madam, your son's illness is not an ordinary one; it is caused by the poison of a malevolent spirit. I will need to conduct further examinations to determine the specific treatment method," Daoist Xuanji stated.
Upon hearing this, the woman quickly replied, "Immortal Master, I will agree to any conditions as long as you can cure Yun's illness!"
Daoist Xuanji looked gravely at Su Mu and said softly, "Su Mu, quickly prepare some talismans for exorcism and the corresponding medicinal herbs.
This matter is of great importance, and we must not be careless." After saying this, he turned his gaze to the anxious woman and spoke earnestly, "Madam, please rest assured. When the moon reaches its zenith tonight, I will set up a ritual altar in the backyard and perform the Daoist rites to drive away the malevolent spirit that haunts your son! However, I ask that you keep everyone in your household restrained during this time; no one is to approach the backyard without permission.
If anyone dares to defy this warning, they must bear the consequences themselves. Do not blame me for not having made this clear beforehand."
The woman nodded repeatedly, indicating her understanding.
As night fell, Daoist Xuanji and Su Mu set up the ritual altar in the backyard, lighting incense and candles as they began their incantations. Su Mu assisted his master while secretly observing Li Yun's condition. He knew that tonight would be a fierce battle.
