He flipped a token in his hand, engraved with the character for "Palace." This was Gong Gan's token, from which he had gleaned a wealth of information. Gong Gan belonged to a collateral branch of the Gong Family. Due to his considerable strength, he had been dispatched to Shu Cang to assist the family. Upon arriving in Shu Cang, he changed his name and adopted the identity of "Boss Gong" for convenience.
"I never expected that these prominent families, so glamorous on the surface, could be so sordid behind the scenes," he sighed, tossing Gong Gan's token into the lava. Such things were not meant to be kept; he wasn't afraid of the Gong Family as long as they remained unaware of his presence.
"Boss, what is a prominent family? What does sordid mean?" Hearing Mo Wen's words, Xiao Hei turned around with a curious expression.
"Uh... well, let me explain it to you. You could easily be deceived looking like that." Seeing Xiao Hei's innocent demeanor, Mo Wen felt it necessary to impart some common knowledge about the world to him, primarily to prevent Xiao Hei from applying the term "sordid" to himself. "A prominent family is a clan with many members who are related by blood. As for sordid, it means bad—like the person who wants to capture you. Gong Gan had revealed two pieces of information to threaten him into abandoning any thoughts of killing him. One incident he personally participated in occurred years ago when the Gong Family wiped out an entire prominent family overnight, leaving no one alive and subsequently burning their residence to the ground. The other incident involved a descendant of the Gong Family who was killed outside. Later, through various means, the Gong Family tracked down the murderer—a powerful individual whose exact realm Gong Gan did not know. In the end, the Gong Family dispatched people over several decades across multiple continents to capture this individual. They used a bone-eating insect to devour his torso and ultimately submerged his head in poison, allowing it to slowly kill his soul. By the time he finally died, ten whole years had passed since his capture. Gong Gan shared these stories merely to convey that anyone who offended the Gong Family would face dire consequences, whether they were part of a prominent family or strong individuals.
Of course, Mo Wen would not judge the Gong Family as sordid based solely on these two incidents. People are diverse; when a clan grows large, some members may inevitably tarnish its reputation. However, based on what Gong Gan later described, it seemed that most members of the Gong Family were indeed such individuals. Gong Gan was sent by the Gong Family to maintain "order" in the Shu Cang Empire. For reasons unknown, various factions coveted Cang Yun—a land without a master—but dared not control it openly. All major powers secretly controlled certain empires; on the surface, these empires appeared autonomous but were merely puppet regimes. Mo Wen had heard about this from Yin Qian long ago. The major powers would send personnel to support their chosen empires; however, these individuals could only operate in secrecy—much like Gong Gan himself—often unable to use their original surnames.
Originally, Mo Wen thought these people were sent to help govern because Yin Qian had said so. However, Gong Gan's mission was quite the opposite; under orders from superiors, he gathered thin ghosts and Liu San in Shu Cang and engaged in all sorts of nefarious activities—robbing travelers and committing murder and arson were part of his tasks, with most of the spoils going back to the family. Creating chaos on one's own territory seemed counterproductive; was there another motive at play? Such operations truly left one perplexed.
