Under the influence of the sensing aura, the three individuals had already landed on the island and were making their way towards the mountain. Mo Wen did not rise; instead, he continued to roast meat over the fire pit. Xiao Hei was dumbfounded, glancing between his own bulging belly and the roasted meat in his leader's hands. The aroma wafting from the meat stirred his appetite, and he regretted eating too quickly earlier, as he barely had time to savor the flavor before it was gone. Looking at the meat on the fire and then at his belly, he could only swallow hard in resignation. It was a classic case of wanting more than he could consume; his leader must have done this on purpose.
Mo Wen pulled out a dagger and sliced some roasted meat, placing it in front of Xiao Hei without caring whether he would eat it or not. He leisurely took small bites of the meat himself. In truth, Mo Wen was also losing his appetite. The distance from the edge of the island to Xiao Shan was several miles at least, and it would take time for the three approaching individuals to arrive. Moreover, they were quite unfortunate; every time they stepped forward, they triggered one of Mo Wen's hidden traps, resulting in explosions that left them in disarray.
"Which bastard set up these traps? Damn it, if I catch him, I'll skin him alive!" Liu San cursed as he brushed off the dust from his clothes after an explosion.
"Haha! San, you just keep talking big about skinning people. Look at your sorry state," a tall and thin man beside him couldn't help but laugh heartily at Liu San's appearance.
"Second brother, don’t mock Third. You're not much better yourself. Everyone be careful; I sensed something just now. Someone might have gotten ahead of us," said the scholarly-looking leader among them.
"What’s there to be afraid of? We three brothers are known as the Deadly Trio. With our realm in this Sea of Lava, we can definitely walk through unscathed," Liu San replied dismissively to his leader’s warning. Since entering the Lava Sea, they had been unstoppable against any enemies they encountered.
The title "Deadly Trio" was given to them by others as a curse predicting their demise; it was a testament to how those who were good rarely lived long while calamities lingered for ages—a notion that had proven true for them. The leader among them was a middle-aged man with a scholarly appearance who seemed weak but was actually the strongest among them. The other two knew little about their leader beyond his surname. The second brother was named Shou Gui; due to his martial arts training, he had forgotten his real name. The third brother was Liu San, who was also the weakest of the trio.
Shou Gui and Liu San had originally been desperate fugitives until they were saved by someone surnamed Gong during a life-or-death moment. Since then, they had followed this Gong without question. Initially, both had coveted their leader's position but abandoned those thoughts after realizing that their lives were saved by Gong and witnessing his capabilities.
Unlike Hei Hu and other Mountain Bandit factions outside, these three remained on the run without claiming territory or gathering followers. Even when approached by potential recruits, Gong would refuse them. At first, Shou Gui and Liu San did not understand why Gong acted this way, but they ultimately chose to obey him—mainly because he had saved their lives and they knew they could not defeat him.
Under Gong's leadership, they had narrowly escaped several ambushes by the Official Government, which earned them immense respect for him from Shou Gui and Liu San. They discovered that following Gong meant they didn’t need to worry about finding targets; as long as they followed their leader’s plans, success was guaranteed.
