The two figures, running in the rain, noticed the presence of Jiang Shi and paused for a moment upon seeing the large number of people gathered.
"I am Li Fuxiu, the Chief of Police from Southeast Province. I know you two are not ordinary individuals. May I ask what brings you here?" Li Fuxiu initiated the conversation, clearly stating his identity.
Generally, martial artists preferred to avoid conflicts with the police.
"Heh, you police are meddling too much. We haven't done anything illegal. Are you going to interfere if we go hiking as well?" one of the men, slightly plump and dressed in black, replied coldly.
"It is precisely because you haven't committed any illegal acts that we can still have a civil conversation. However, you have been sneaking around here at this hour multiple times. If you had no purpose, do you think I would believe that?" Li Fuxiu responded calmly.
"We're not bothering you; it would be wise for you to leave now. Otherwise, if this drags on, I won't mind letting you spend the night in the rain," the plump man said impatiently.
"Are you openly provoking the police? I advise you to come clean. Otherwise, bullets don't discriminate. No matter how skilled you are, they are faster," Li Fuxiu's patience began to wear thin; it was infuriating that he, as a chief, was being disregarded.
"Brother, these people are troublesome; let's take action," the plump man said with a hostile tone.
The tall and thin man beside him nodded in agreement.
Then, astonishingly, both men vanished from sight. Li Fuxiu and Jiang Shi's expressions changed drastically as they quickly stood back-to-back with their flashlights raised, scanning their surroundings. Yet the darkness seemed to swallow their light; even twenty flashlights failed to reveal the whereabouts of the two figures.
Suddenly, a strange fragrance wafted through the air. Before Li Fuxiu and Jiang Shi could react to the scent, they felt dizzy and their vision blurred until they collapsed onto the ground.
"These people are truly a nuisance. Brother, why not just kill them?" the plump man said irritably.
"Don't create unnecessary complications. In just one more day, tomorrow night we will achieve our goal. That Yin Pool has nurtured its essence for a hundred years. Now, let’s focus on our task," the tall and thin man replied in a deep voice.
With that, they ignored Li Fuxiu and Jiang Shi and used their skills to disappear into the rainy night, heading towards Longyan Pool.
What they did not anticipate was that although Jiang Shi had been affected by the drug, he was not completely unconscious; he merely felt weak and slumped on the ground while overhearing their conversation.
After they left, Jiang Shi struggled to his feet and began pinching himself and slapping his face to wake Li Fuxiu and the others.
"Li Ting, I think we should go back and reconsider our options. Those two are too unpredictable. They must have used some kind of sleeping powder on us; without gas masks, we were easy targets," Jiang Shi said with lingering fear, recalling that the plump man had shown intent to kill earlier.
"Alright, let’s hurry back. By the way, Jiang Shi, how come you're unaffected?" Li Fuxiu asked as he noticed everyone else was soaked and realizing they were outmatched by their opponents; he had no choice but to order a retreat while still puzzled by Jiang Shi's immunity to the drug.
"Li Ting, I... I don’t know either. Perhaps it’s because of the talisman my daughter gave me," Jiang Shi replied uncertainly. Earlier that evening, Jiang Jiewen had placed a talisman given by Jiang Chen into Jiang Shi's pocket before they left; there had indeed been a strange force that kept him alert during that encounter.
