Jiang Jiewen and Jiang Chen had been sitting in the tea room for over an hour when the clock struck a little past two in the afternoon.
“It’s about time. I’ll take you home,” Jiang Chen said.
“Okay,” Jiang Jiewen nodded. Although she felt reluctant to part with Jiang Chen, she obediently accepted his words.
As they stepped out of the private room, Jiang Chen was at the front desk settling the bill when a few people walked in.
“Jiang Jiewen, aren’t you supposed to be at your middle school class reunion? What are you doing here? Is it trendy for young people to drink tea during gatherings now?” A voice called out, and it was none other than Jiang Jiewen’s father, Jiang Shi.
“Dad~~” Jiang Jiewen’s voice was noticeably flustered.
Having finished paying, Jiang Chen turned around and saw Jiang Shi. He recognized him from when he had dropped off Jiang Jiewen at school during their middle school days. Though years had passed, Jiang Shi hadn’t changed much, and Jiang Chen easily recognized him.
This was the first time Jiang Shi had seen Jiang Chen and assumed he was his daughter’s boyfriend. But why did he seem so ordinary?
“Who is this young man?” Jiang Shi asked.
“Dad, this is Jiang Chen!” Jiang Jiewen answered honestly.
“Really? He’s Jiang Chen?” Jiang Shi looked skeptical. After all, since entering university, Jiang Jiewen had spoken highly of Jiang Chen, painting him as someone extraordinary. It was clear to her father that she had feelings for him. Since he was capable, Jiang Shi didn’t oppose his daughter dating him.
However, as the years went by, his daughter had not sought out any other boyfriends and seemed fixated on Jiang Chen, who appeared indifferent to her feelings—especially recently, as there hadn’t even been any news from him. This made Jiang Shi quite anxious and increasingly dissatisfied with Jiang Chen. Even if he possessed remarkable abilities and background, it didn’t justify his daughter wasting her youth on him.
Jiang Shi’s feelings were understandable; any father would likely feel the same way. After all, Jiang Jiewen was indeed exceptional—beautiful and not inferior to those actresses on television, with a high level of education to boot. With such qualities, she could easily marry into a wealthy family. Was there really no one better than Jiang Chen in this world?
Over the past two years, Jiang Shi had tried countless times to persuade his daughter otherwise. Yet every time she mentioned Jiang Chen, it was as if she had been enchanted—she remained steadfastly loyal to him and defended him fiercely as if he were a deity in her heart, unworthy of any criticism from others, even her parents. She firmly insisted that there was no man more outstanding than Jiang Chen.
Jiang Shi felt that his daughter had lost her reason because of Jiang Chen and harbored deep resentment towards him. He even thought that when he finally met Jiang Chen one day, he would give him a good talking-to. But now that they stood face to face, he found himself frozen in place and somewhat at a loss.
“You are Jiang Chen?” Jiang Shi looked deeply at him, his tone heavy and complex.
Jiang Chen smiled slightly and nodded at Jiang Shi as a greeting before turning to Jiang Jiewen and gently saying, “Since your dad is here, I’ll take my leave.”
“Uh, okay,” Jiang Jiewen nodded. She didn’t want to witness the encounter between Jiang Chen and her father just yet.
As Jiang Chen passed by Jiang Shi, he noticed the slight movement of his throat. If this was how he treated her father, how well could he possibly treat his daughter? Just as Jiang Chen was about to push open the door to leave, Jiang Shi finally spoke up.
