"I'm just here to take a stroll," Lou Yu said, gently ruffling Xiao Douya's hair.
Xiao Douya lowered his head in thought and then said, "Uncle, would you like to come into our health center? We’re offering free consultations lately."
Seeing the child’s cute and clever demeanor, Lou Yu bought a skewer of candied hawthorn from a vendor nearby and handed it to him with a smile, saying, "You’re quite charming, working so hard to bring customers to the health center. Is this your family’s pharmacy?"
Xiao Douya happily licked the candied hawthorn and replied in a sweet voice, "Yes, it’s run by my grandpa."
A slight tremor passed through Lou Yu's eyes as an unsettling premonition washed over him. He scrutinized the child closely and suddenly noticed that there was something about the boy's features that irked him, yet his round eyes exuded an endearing charm.
With a smirk, Lou Yu abruptly snatched the candied hawthorn from Xiao Douya's hand and asked, "Is your grandpa Ye Chen?"
Xiao Douya stared at the candied hawthorn that was now far from him in confusion and hurriedly replied, "Yes, yes! Grandpa is Ye Chen, my father is Pei Guanjing, and my grandfather is..."
Before Xiao Douya could finish, Lou Yu took a big bite of the candied hawthorn, stuffing it into his mouth until his cheeks bulged. He said, "You shouldn’t eat this; it's not good for kids."
Xiao Douya seemed to suffer a tremendous blow. First, he widened his eyes in shock, then pouted his lips and looked at Lou Yu with a pitiful expression. He tugged at Lou Yu's clothes gently and said in a whiny voice, "Uncle, I want to eat... candy..."
Lou Yu felt an indescribable anger rise within him. How could he have bought food for Pei Guanjing’s son? He was truly losing his mind. The more he thought about it, the angrier he became. While chewing on the candied hawthorn, he pointed a finger at Xiao Douya's forehead dismissively and said with a sneer, "I told you that you can't eat this."
Xiao Douya was so upset that he burst into tears.
At that moment, Ming Xiting had just stepped off the carriage and witnessed this scene.
The man had a broad and upright figure that exuded an invisible sense of pressure from afar. He wore a long dark robe that fluttered slightly in the breeze, accentuating his tall and straight posture.
As he drew closer, Ming Xiting could see the man's face clearly.
He had sharp eyebrows that slanted into his temples and deep phoenix eyes that seemed distant yet piercing. There was a hint of sharpness and coldness in his gaze. His high nose had strong lines, and his thin lips were slightly curled into a smirk that carried a trace of disdain.
He was handsome, but his character did not match his looks at all.
Thus, before Ming Xiting could approach further, a sharp voice rang out directly into Lou Yu's ears.
"Have you no shame? A grown man bullying a child!"
Lou Yu squinted as he swallowed the last candied hawthorn, then turned to Ming Xiting and coldly said, “What’s it to you?”
Looking up, he saw Kun Ze approaching. Tall and slender, he stood like a graceful bamboo. His features were strikingly beautiful, with skin as white as snow, exuding an aura of Ice Skin Jade Bone.
Ming Xiting was dressed in a light yellow long robe today, appearing elegant and dignified. A warm-colored headband hung from his ink-black hair, fluttering gently in the breeze. He took a few light steps and soon stood before Lou Yu.
“Why shouldn’t it concern me? You’re a grown man bullying a child. Is there no sense of justice left? You even have to snatch a string of candied hawthorns from a kid,” he exclaimed loudly.
His voice drew the attention of the surrounding crowd, who began to gather.
Some recognized the young master of the Ming family.
“It’s Young Master Ming Xiting! He’s actually arguing with someone,” one person remarked.
“Indeed! I wonder who this person is to provoke Kun Ze into such a rage, even disregarding etiquette to publicly insult him,” another added.
As more people gathered, Lou Yu glared coldly at Ming Xiting and said fiercely, “I’ll remember you.”
Ming Xiting was equally unyielding, returning the glare and shouting back, “If you have guts, don’t run away. Let’s see if I won’t deal with you.” With that, he prepared to call for someone to stop Lou Yu.
Noticing movement at the entrance of the health hall, Lou Yu smirked and quickly turned to leave, disappearing into the crowd.
The hidden guards watching from the shadows widened their eyes. Not only did he snatch food from a child but he also publicly argued with Kun Ze. If this got out, would they be killed?
Ye Chen heard his son crying and hurriedly pulled Pei Guanjing outside. They had been inside organizing herbs and seeing patients; usually, they let Xiao Douya play at the door. Unexpectedly, today the little one had started crying—a rare occurrence since it was usually other children who came crying to them.
After taking the child from Ming Xiting’s arms, Ye Chen dispersed the onlookers while placing Xiao Douya into Pei Guanjing’s embrace. He then took Ming Xiting’s hand and led him into the health hall.
Pei Guanjing watched Ye Chen take the initiative to hold Ming Xiting’s hand, a complex expression flashing in his eyes—ambiguous and uncertain.
Su Ye followed behind Ming Xiting. He and Ming Xiting positioned themselves—one sitting next to Ye Chen while the other stood behind them.
“Hey, Ye Chen! Your son was just bullied! Didn’t you see? Someone snatched his candied hawthorn!” Ming Xiting exclaimed, his throat dry as he lifted his teacup for a big gulp, far from the refined demeanor that people had attributed to Kun Ze earlier.
Su Ye froze with his hands raised in mid-air. When had their young master become so rude? He had almost been frightened just now; when had he gained such courage to confront someone much taller than himself in public?
Ye Chen raised an eyebrow and glanced at Pei Guanjing, who was standing to the side holding Xiao Douya. "Did you buy that for him?"
Pei Guanjing replied with a calm expression, "I didn't."
Ye Chen then fixed his gaze on Xiao Douya. "Did you steal money to buy it?"
Xiao Douya quickly shook his head, his eyes reddening as he spoke pitifully, "I didn’t! That uncle bought it for me, but... I only had one, and then he took it away. Wuwu..."
Seeing his son about to cry again, Ye Chen felt a surge of irritation and pulled Ming Xiting up. "Let's go talk in the backyard."
Ming Xiting stood up in response, and Su Ye, noticing this, tried to follow him but was stopped by Ming Xiting's outstretched hand. "You go back and tell my father that I will be staying here for a while to treat my illness."
Upon hearing this, Su Ye immediately turned around and hurried off, eager to inform his master that he had finally decided to take the initiative to seek treatment.
As expected, Su Ye soon returned with Ming Zhao's message, stating that as long as the treatment showed results, he would agree to however long it took. He also brought a box of small gold ingots for Ye Chen. This all happened about an hour later.
Meanwhile, Pei Guanjing remained indifferent, holding the still-sniffling Xiao Douya in his arms as he watched his wife take someone into the backyard right in front of him.
It wasn't until someone called out from the entrance, "Hey, is the doctor here? I need treatment," that he turned around, gently setting down the exhausted Xiao Douya to attend to the patient.
