The troops from Lan Prefecture have come to provide support, but why has he not received any news? Liu Jin furrowed his brow, looking at Pei Guanjing, observing him discreetly. Pei Guanjing, dressed in a deep blue long robe, had one shoulder soaked with blood. Nevertheless, the determination in his eyes and the firmness in his voice suggested that he was indeed telling the truth. 0

On this Azure Wind Bright Moon Night, amidst the snow-covered pines, Pei Guanjing was as unfathomable as the rumors suggested. However... 0

As Liu Jin's gaze swept over the bloodstains on Pei Guanjing's clothing, he averted his eyes. If these injuries were due to his deliberate neglect of Chen Er’s safety in favor of his own, he would not have been wounded so severely. When Ye Chen returned, aside from a scratch on his face, there were no other injuries visible, which clearly indicated that he had protected Ye Chen well. 0

Such a husband, if he were not Pei Yongshang's adopted son, Liu Jin would certainly agree to this marriage. But now, the union between Pei Guanjing and Chen Er was no longer a decision for just the two of them; it represented the merging of powers from the capital, Lan Prefecture, and Chongzhou, concerning the stability of the realm. Moreover, it involved Chen Er’s future happiness, which he could not decide lightly. 0

"Hmph, how do I know if what you say is true? Why have I not received any letters? The troops from Lan Prefecture have come to Chongzhou, yet no news has been released. Are you trying to deceive me?" 0

Although Liu Jin knew in his heart that Pei Guanjing would not lie to him, he still felt dissatisfied. His son was standing right beside him, pouring him tea. 0

"Guanjing, drink some hot water; your medicine will be ready soon," Ye Chen interjected. While he could not intervene in military matters, serving tea was still within his capabilities. 0

His father had hidden his identity and concealed himself here because there was a traitor within the Chongzhou Military Camp who leaked maps of Chongzhou, leading to an invasion by troops from Linzhou City and resulting in countless casualties. His father had received news in advance and had played along with Uncle Huo to set this trap to uncover the mastermind behind it all. However, he had not anticipated that so many soldiers would come from Linzhou City; it exceeded their calculations. Thus, they had no choice but to retreat temporarily and feign death to wait for a suitable opportunity to draw out the culprits. If his father had not told him these things today, he might have truly believed that something unfortunate had happened to him. 0

"Sir, the time has come." A somewhat unfamiliar voice came from outside the door; it was the bodyguard who had brought him to find his father. 0

Upon hearing this, Liu Jin glanced at Pei Guanjing and Ye Chen before suddenly standing up and opening the door to step outside. However, he did not close the door but left it ajar so that he could still see inside from a distance. 0

After Liu Jin left, Ye Chen looked at Pei Guanjing several times before taking away the bowl of medicine Liu Jin had finished: "I’ll go find you something to eat." 0

Seeing Ye Chen step outside, Pei Guanjing smiled and nodded: "Alright." 0

Ye Chen returned once more, holding a bowl of porridge and offering it to him. Pei Guanjing, however, did not take it; he merely pressed his lips together and gazed at him. 0

“A Chen, I initially…” 0

“Don’t speak, just eat. Once the medicine is ready, you can take it,” Ye Chen interrupted him, placing the porridge in front of Pei Guanjing and impatiently urging, “Hurry up and drink.” 0

Before long, Liu Jin returned. He stared at Pei Guanjing for a long moment without saying anything, then approached and ruffled Ye Chen’s hair. “A Chen, it’s getting late; you should go to bed.” 0

“But the medicine in the kitchen…” 0

Liu Jin snorted coldly. “Young Master Pei understands medicine; he doesn’t need anyone else to help him brew it. Don’t worry about it; go back to your room and sleep.” 0

Liu Jin’s tone was firm, indicating that Ye Chen could no longer stay here. Since Pei Guanjing was already fine, Ye Chen decided not to argue further and turned to leave. 0

Pei Guanjing watched Ye Chen’s departing figure in silence for a moment but was soon called back by Liu Jin. “Regarding the troops from Lan Prefecture, my personal guards have reported back; this matter counts as your achievement. The timing is right for General Huo now; I need to go oversee things. As for Chen Er… I must entrust his care to you for the time being. Can you manage that?” 0

Pei Guanjing rose and bowed respectfully. “I will protect A Chen without regard for my own life; I assure King Huai'an that he will be safe.” 0

With his promise secured, Liu Jin felt truly reassured. He could not afford to be away from the front lines for too long, especially leaving Chen Er alone here. Since Pei Guanjing had arrived, he would temporarily take on the responsibility of protecting Chen Er. 0

“I will leave tonight; you can explain things to him tomorrow.” With that, Liu Jin exited through the back gate of the courtyard. 0

On this wintry night with falling snow, the sky was dark red, as if it were about to bleed at any moment. 0

The tranquil and peaceful mountain village had long since fallen asleep, with only the horse tied in the stable being led away by Liu Jin and his companions. 0

This was the countryside, a private residence belonging to his loyal soldiers. He was temporarily staying here to create confusion; with so many people around, the risk of exposure was too great. His departure would actually be beneficial for Chen Er. 0

Turning back to glance at the lit room inside, Liu Jin turned around and drove the cart away with his men. 0

After Liu Jin left, Ye Chen did not go to sleep. Instead, he sat on the edge of his bed, contemplating whether he should go meet Pei Guanjing. His injuries were so severe that even walking to the small kitchen seemed like a challenge. Did he really want to follow his father's reckless behavior? 0

Just then, as Ye Chen's thoughts raced, a sudden sharp sound of something breaking pierced the silence. 0

Was it a bowl that shattered? 0

Ye Chen sprang up abruptly and rushed out of his room. 0

As he hurried into the small kitchen, he found Pei Guanjing holding a bowl of medicine, gently bringing it to his lips. Upon seeing Ye Chen, he seemed unsurprised and instead smiled at him. "You’re here." 0

Noticing the medicine still in Pei Guanjing's bowl, Ye Chen asked in confusion, "The medicine is still there, so what was that sound just now?" 0

"How could I bear to break the medicine you prepared for me? That was just me accidentally knocking over a bowl while getting this one. Did I disturb you?" 0

Following Pei Guanjing's gaze, Ye Chen indeed saw that a bowl had shattered on the floor nearby. 0
