The man’s beard nearly covered half of his face. In the countryside, those who worked the fields rarely kept such an inconvenient beard.
His skin was dark, but under the flickering candlelight, it seemed uneven in places, giving off an air of disguise. Coupled with the facial features that bore a five-part resemblance to Ye Chen and the utterance of "Father," there was no doubt about his identity.
This man was King Huai'an, Liu Jin, Ye Chen's father-in-law.
Pei Guanjing immediately bent down and bowed, saying, "Xiao Xu pays respects to Father-in-law."
"Don't! I can't accept such courtesy from you," Liu Jin replied without even glancing at him. "This king has never seen anyone come to plead like this; it was only after forcing his father to sign the marriage contract that he was let go."
Upon hearing this, Ye Chen shot a sharp look at Pei Guanjing. It turned out that the agreements they had made with his father regarding those Promotion Edicts were all signed under threats.
Liu Jin did not tell Pei Guanjing to rise, and naturally, Pei Guanjing did not dare to get up. What he had done was indeed disgraceful, but if he hadn’t feared that Lou Yu would take the lead, he wouldn’t have resorted to such a clumsy method to seek a marriage proposal from King Huai'an.
Thinking of this, Pei Guanjing lifted his long robe and knelt directly before Liu Jin.
Seeing this, Liu Jin looked at him a few more times; this kid had some sense of responsibility and dared to face the consequences of his actions.
Ye Chen fixed his gaze on Pei Guanjing. The bandages he had helped wrap were already beginning to soak through with blood. He had sustained serious injuries yet had escaped with Ye Chen for an entire night. He hadn’t been injured himself; rather, Pei Guanjing had taken on much of the burden, which ultimately led to him collapsing from blood loss.
Now, Pei Guanjing was kneeling like this. It was winter, and the cold stone floor was biting; how could he remain kneeling for long? Just as Ye Chen was about to step forward to help Pei Guanjing up, Liu Jin shot him a glance and disdainfully snorted.
Liu Jin coughed a few times, signaling Ye Chen not to intervene. Ye Chen had no choice but to relent.
Time stood still. The wound on Pei Guanjing's chest was about to burst with blood, and Ye Chen could no longer wait. He frowned at Liu Jin, signaling him to wrap it up; couldn’t he see how badly Pei Guanjing was injured?
However, Liu Jin pretended not to notice and continued to cough.
Seeing his father intent on letting Pei Guanjing suffer until he knelt in defeat, Ye Chen felt a surge of urgency. He quickly shoved the medicine from the table into Liu Jin's hands. “Drink this, Father. Stop coughing. You’ve caught a chill; just take your medicine.”
After forcing a spoonful of medicine into Liu Jin's mouth, Ye Chen turned and hurried to Pei Guanjing's side, helping him to stand. With concern etched on his face, he asked, “Are you alright?”
Pei Guanjing smiled faintly and shook his head, his gaze lingering on Ye Chen. His young man had grown into such an extraordinary figure; even the way he frowned was captivating.
Liu Jin beside them curled his lip in annoyance. “Ah, children grow up too fast. I’m still here, yet you rush to help him instead of attending to your father?”
Ye Chen pursed his lips. “Father, look at the situation! He escorted me out of Military Camp and got hurt like this, yet you still want to settle scores with him? Can’t you wait until he’s healed? Bullying a sick person isn’t the lesson you taught me.”
“Uh…” Liu Jin was momentarily speechless. “Fine, do as you please. But Pei Guanjing’s appearance in Chongzhou should warrant an explanation for this old man.”
Pei Guanjing was helped in front of Liu Jin by Ye Chen. He first bowed respectfully to Liu Jin before sitting down and slowly said, “I apologize for my earlier disrespect; I hope Father-in-law can forgive me.”
Liu Jin finished the medicine brewed by Ye Chen and set down the bowl, wiping his mouth. “Oh, you haven’t even married our Chen Er yet you’re already trying to curry favor. Is the son of Pei Yongshang so shameless?”
Despite the insult, Pei Guanjing remained unfazed, maintaining his calm demeanor as if nothing could disturb him. His gaze softened as it fell upon Ye Chen beside Liu Jin.
“Your Highness King Huai'an, my engagement with A Chen has been publicly announced and cannot be annulled. If that were the case, our alliance would be rendered meaningless.”
“An alliance? How dare you bring that up!” King Huai'an scoffed. “Our Chongzhou was ambushed by Linzhou city, yet you and that old thief Pei Yongshang didn’t send any troops to help. And now you still expect me to marry Chen Er to you?”
Ye Chen lowered his gaze towards Pei Guanjing. Indeed, they were allies, but why didn’t the capital send reinforcements when Chongzhou was attacked? Was this all just a ruse?
Pei Guanjing had ridden three horses to exhaustion to arrive first in Chongzhou. His intentions were not limited to rescuing Ye Chen; there was something else he aimed to accomplish.
“I have already reassigned troops from Lan Prefecture, and they are expected to arrive in Chongzhou within the next few days. Please rest assured, King Huai'an, with A Chen here, I will ensure he comes to no harm. Trust me, marrying him to Xiao Xu will guarantee that he will not be bullied by anyone.”
