"You weren't in Cangzhou..." Ye Chen's words were abruptly cut off by a sudden embrace.
Lou Yu had already stretched out his arms and tightly held him, whispering in his ear, "Ye Chen, I’m finally back."
Ye Chen also wrapped his arms around him in return.
However, it wasn't long before his hands holding Lou Yu were pulled away by Mo Sheng standing nearby.
"Crown Prince Yong, now that Prince Yong is still at Prince Yong’s Manor, it is rather inappropriate for you to return to the capital and not visit him, but instead come to see Young Master Pei’s Wenxin Study to meet his fiancée," Mo Sheng said, increasing the force with which he tugged Lou Yu. Lou Yu squinted at him for a moment before releasing Ye Chen.
Ye Chen suddenly remembered that their current identities were quite sensitive, and such actions seemed rather inappropriate.
Lou Yu finally let go but still smiled as he said, "Ye Chen, after you were taken away by King Ren's subordinate Li Wangcai, I have been searching for you. Later, our spies in Yunzhou got the news, but unexpectedly, Pei Guanjing got there first and went to rescue you alone. Otherwise, the one who should have saved you back then would have been me."
After saying this, Lou Yu carefully examined Ye Chen from head to toe, a hint of an indescribable emotion flashing in his eyes. "Ye Chen, do you blame me?"
At this question, Ye Chen felt a bit displeased.
The way he asked made it seem as if there was some special relationship between him and Lou Yu. The entire world was already gossiping about the love triangle involving him, Lou Yu, and Pei Guanjing; his words seemed to confirm those rumors.
Sure enough, when Lou Yu walked into the small kitchen and hugged Ye Chen again, all the maidservants and young servants except for Mo Sheng gasped in shock.
Especially when Lou Yu asked Ye Chen if he blamed him; his tone was playful like that of a young couple teasing each other, which only fueled their whispers and astonishment.
So those rumors were indeed true.
Ye Chen remained silent while Lou Yu's fingertips unconsciously stroked the tiger-head pattern on the hilt of his sword. He gazed at Ye Chen’s now charming and bright demeanor, a flicker of hidden emotions passing through his eyes: "That day in Yunzhou..."
"Alright, let’s not talk about that anymore. Lou Yu, you must try the cake I just made; I didn’t make anything like this while I was in the army." Ye Chen took the initiative to pull Lou Yu's arm and led him to see the new dishes he had prepared when they were suddenly interrupted again.
Lou Yu and Ye Chen turned to follow the cold glint of light.
Mo Sheng stood between them with a grim expression, his sword at his waist slicing through the morning light with a sharp arc. "Crown Prince Yong, please conduct yourself appropriately."
What is going on with the Little Prince? I don't know if Qian Kun is different, but as a Kun Ze or even an engaged Kun Ze, he actually took the initiative to hold hands with another Tian Qian. His behavior is so reckless; why does the Young Master have to take a liking to him?
Lou Yu, however, was not afraid of him. He took a bite of the cake that Ye Chen handed him, white cream sliding down the corner of his mouth. Ye Chen instinctively reached out to wipe the cream from his mouth like he used to, when suddenly a loud shout came from the doorway.
"A Chen!" Pei Guanjing's cold voice startled the sparrows from under the eaves.
He stood in the corridor, his fox-colored cloak lifted by the autumn wind, revealing the Haitang Fragrance pouch that Ye Chen had given him at his waist.
Ye Chen looked at the suddenly appearing Pei Guanjing and then at Lou Yu, whose mouth was smeared with cream. He suddenly felt that the egg beater in his hand was particularly hot.
Why does he always find himself in these awkward situations? He was just greeting an old friend!
A quarter of an hour later, several people sat around the dining table in the hall, exchanging silent glances, and the atmosphere felt somewhat heavy.
Finally, Lou Yu broke the silence first, a slight smile on his lips as he said, "Ye Chen, have you grown taller?"
This hit home for Ye Chen. He quickly reached up to measure his height and grinned, "You really notice everything; I have indeed grown this much." He gestured two or three centimeters with his fingers and then turned the topic back to Lou Yu. "You've grown quite a bit too."
Although they had been apart for several months, Ye Chen had known Lou Yu for about a year. The boy was in his youth and had a Tian Qian physique, making his height particularly noticeable. In contrast, while Ye Chen had also grown taller, he still stood half a head shorter than Lou Yu.
"Haha, yes, you’ve grown taller but still remain so short," Lou Yu teased back.
Ye Chen's smile instantly vanished.
The next moment, a familiar voice rang out: "You may have grown taller, but has your brain grown too?"
The familiar insult slipped out effortlessly, causing Lou Yu to burst into laughter that echoed throughout the hall.
Pei Guanjing tightened his grip on his chopsticks until his knuckles turned white. He wished he could stand up and leave immediately, but thinking about how Ye Chen would continue reminiscing with Lou Yu after he left made him hold back. He lowered his gaze to focus on the grains of rice at the bottom of his bowl.
He couldn't give them that opportunity.
So he remained seated there with an unwavering posture like a mountain, though his fingers unconsciously tightened around his cup.
He had to wait until Lou Yu left before he could speak.
Now that he was Ye Chen's husband, he naturally needed to be broad-minded and understanding; when friends came to visit, they were guests.
Before Pei Guanjing could continue to endure and figure out when to ask Lou Yu to leave, a young servant hurried over, walking briskly and cupping his fists in greeting. "General Xiao Lou, the Regent has summoned you. You should go see him."
Upon hearing this, Lou Yu immediately stood up decisively, his movements sharp and quick as he turned to leave.
However, halfway there, he turned back and looked at Ye Chen with a gentle gaze, saying, "Ye Chen, I will come find you again."
Ye Chen stretched his neck to watch Lou Yu's retreating figure until Pei Guanjing's piercing gaze made him abruptly look away, startled enough that he nearly jumped up from the table.
Pei Guanjing was sitting there, his eyes fixed on Ye Chen with a sharpness akin to that of a hawk.
There was no emotion visible in his gaze, but Ye Chen knew well that it wasn't friendly.
He forced a smile, feeling awkward as he scooped up a spoonful of cake and stammered, "Let's eat, let's eat. You haven't tried the cake I made yet, have you?"
Pei Guanjing glanced at him once more before silently lowering his head to pick up his rice bowl. He took up his chopsticks and began to eat slowly, his brow slightly furrowed.
Even though it was just a half-finished product he had come up with himself, it was starting to take shape. The difference from what was sold in the bakery was significant, yet it bore some resemblance. As for the taste—since Lou Yu hadn't complained, it seemed it might still be acceptable.
