"Mom~" Lin Bingbing said with a slightly sullen face, expressing her dissatisfaction.
"It's none of your business. I'm having a chat with Xiao Jiang. Go to the kitchen and bring out the dishes," Mother Lin said, glaring at her daughter with an authoritative tone.
"Uh." Lin Bingbing felt helpless and headed to the kitchen to serve the food.
Meanwhile, Jiang Chen smiled and replied, "I don't have any background; my parents have passed away."
To be honest, Jiang Chen didn't really know much about Lin Bingbing's family. If he had known what kind of people her family was, he wouldn't have bothered with them at all. The only reason he could still exchange a few words with Mother Lin was entirely because of Lin Bingbing; otherwise, a meddlesome woman like her wouldn't have the right to speak to him.
As Jiang Chen finished speaking, he could clearly sense that the atmosphere had shifted.
Lin Bingbing's family suddenly turned their gazes unfriendly.
"How fickle," Jiang Chen thought to himself, amused but not overly concerned; he was just there for a meal after all.
"Dad, Mom, everyone, it's time to eat!" Lin Bingbing called out as she brought the dishes over.
"You come with me," Mother Lin said darkly as she pulled Lin Bingbing into another room, completely ignoring Jiang Chen.
"Bingbing, you casually invite someone over to deceive me? Do you really think your mom is that foolish and easily tricked? That guy even admitted it himself—he has no background," Mother Lin questioned coldly.
"He really doesn't have a background, but he has strength," Lin Bingbing replied.
"Pfft, what good is strength without a background? He thinks he can aim for something beyond his reach. Hurry up and make him leave; I don't want Second Young Master of Shyr seeing this. If he finds out about this guy, that kid won't get away unscathed," Mother Lin scoffed.
"Mom, what are you saying? Didn't I tell you? Even if our province's Underground World bosses saw Jiang Chen, they would treat him with respect. Don't offend him; otherwise, I won't be able to help you," Lin Bingbing frowned. Her mother's snobbishness was truly infuriating.
"Still trying to deceive me? Bingbing, after dinner, let this kid go. I'm giving you face; if you insist on keeping him around, I'll throw him out myself," Mother Lin said sternly.
Lin Bingbing was utterly speechless.
"Hmph, you really think you have the right to eat with him? Jiang Chen is here because of my goodwill. If you're unwelcome, that's even better; I'd rather dine with him outside," Lin Bingbing declared before storming out and pulling Jiang Chen along with her. Jiang Chen said nothing and followed her outside.
"Bingbing, don't be willful! Come back! Don't forget you have an engagement banquet tonight!" Mother Lin's voice called from behind.
Lin Bingbing ignored her and drove away quickly.
"Jiang Chen, I'm sorry," Lin Bingbing apologized, her eyes reddening as she fought back tears.
"Are you getting engaged tonight?" Jiang Chen asked.
"Yeah, my mom agreed to it for me, but I won't accept it," Lin Bingbing said firmly.
"Tell me what happened," Jiang Chen said calmly.
Since the question was asked, Lin Bingbing naturally did not hide anything and shared the situation at home in detail.
After hearing Lin Bingbing's story, Jiang Chen felt a sense of melancholy. The impact of one's family background on a person is immense. Who would have thought that the glamorous and celebrated star, Lin Bingbing, came from such a troubled family?
"Since you are unwilling to settle this marriage, no one can force you," Jiang Chen said after listening, which brought a bright smile to Lin Bingbing's face.
