The rain fell in dense strands, hammering against the windshield and weaving the road ahead into a blurry gray curtain. Lin Xia gripped the steering wheel tightly, her fingertips turning white from the pressure, her nails nearly digging into her palms. The cold, mechanical voice of the car's navigation system repeatedly announced, "You have deviated from the route," but she stubbornly continued to drive forward. 0

Three days ago, Lin Xia received a mysterious letter. On yellowed paper, the ink was pressed so deeply that it seemed to seep through, bearing the words "The old house awaits your return," signed by her grandfather, who had passed away ten years ago. The letter was like a stone thrown into a calm lake, sending ripples through her innermost thoughts. In her memories, her grandfather always wore those gold-rimmed glasses, sitting in a wicker chair at the old house, telling her mysterious and ancient stories. Now, that old house nestled deep in the mountains seemed to possess an irresistible magic, drawing her into this journey filled with uncertainty. 0

Finally, the old house came into view. It stood like a weary elder, quietly enduring the storm. The weathered red brick walls were covered in dark green moss, like scars left by time; on the faded Vermilion Door, the Copper Door Knocker was rusted and lost its former luster. As she pushed open the heavy door, a sharp creaking echoed in the silent space, as if the old house were awakening from years of slumber. 0

Stepping inside, a damp and moldy smell assaulted her senses, mingled with a faint hint of sandalwood that made her stomach churn. Lin Xia fumbled to turn on her phone's flashlight; the dim beam cut through the darkness, casting flickering shadows on the walls. Just then, a barely audible sigh drifted down from upstairs, as if someone were whispering in her ear. Lin Xia's heart raced, a chill creeping up her spine. She forced herself to suppress her fear and shouted loudly, "Who’s there?!" But all that answered her was an empty echo. 0

Gathering her courage, she slowly ascended the staircase. With each step she took, the stairs creaked underfoot as if they might collapse at any moment. On the second floor corridor hung several old portraits; the eyes of the figures seemed to follow her movements, sending shivers down her spine. Lin Xia quickened her pace in an attempt to escape this eerie atmosphere. Suddenly, she stepped on something soft; looking down, she found a wet cat. Its eyes glowed with an eerie green light as it stared at her before letting out a piercing yowl and darting into the darkness like a flash of lightning. 0

Startled, Lin Xia stumbled back and collided heavily against the wall. She gasped for breath, trying to calm herself. At that moment, hurried footsteps echoed from downstairs—growing closer and clearer with each passing second. Lin Xia widened her eyes and fixed her gaze on the staircase entrance; her heart raced as if it would burst from her chest. However, when the footsteps reached the corner of the stairs, they abruptly ceased as if their owner had vanished into thin air. 0

Fear engulfed Lin Xia like a tidal wave. She turned and dashed into the nearest bedroom, slamming the door shut behind her and bracing herself against it with all her strength. In the darkness, her breathing sounded unnaturally loud. Gradually adjusting to the gloom, she was horrified to discover that in the frame on the bedside table, her grandfather's photograph had become indistinct; his lips seemed to curl into an eerie smile. 0
