The plagiarism incident involving Lin Weiwei was like a stone thrown into a calm lake, creating massive ripples. The school acted quickly; after an investigation, they directly revoked Lin Weiwei's competition eligibility and issued a public reprimand. While it wasn't severe enough to lead to expulsion, it was undoubtedly a devastating blow for her, as she had been meticulously crafting her image as the "Pure Talent Girl."
She became the laughingstock of the entire school. Wherever she went, people pointed and whispered about her. The boys who used to flock around her now avoided her like the plague. Even Zhang Li's followers quietly distanced themselves from her.
Lin Weiwei hadn't attended classes for several days; it was said that she locked herself in her dorm room, crying inconsolably.
As for me, I emerged as the biggest winner from this incident. Not only had I cleared my name and proven my abilities, but my design also won first prize in the competition without any doubt. More importantly, my image within the department and even the school had completely transformed. I went from being an inconspicuous figure who merely followed Chen Mu Yang around to an independent, talented individual who was not to be trifled with.
It felt pretty good.
Chen Mu Yang had been having a tough time too these past few days. On one hand, he likely felt deceived by Lin Weiwei regarding her feelings and trust, which hit him hard. On the other hand, his earlier blind defense of Lin Weiwei and his questioning of me had put him in an awkward position. Many people privately criticized him for being naive and love-struck.
He attempted to talk to me several times but was met with my outright indifference.
That afternoon, while I was researching in the library, he surprisingly followed me and sat down across from me. The library was quiet, filled only with the sound of pages turning.
After a long silence, he finally spoke awkwardly, "Ye Zi... I'm sorry."
I didn't even lift my eyelids, continuing to read my book.
He seemed a bit anxious, leaning forward slightly and lowering his voice even more. "I was wrong before; I shouldn't have doubted you or misunderstood you... Wei Wei..."
"Stop." I finally set my book down and looked at him with no warmth in my gaze. "Chen Mu Yang, there's no need for an apology. I don't need it."
"I..." He was taken aback by my coldness, his face showing hurt. "I know you're still angry. But Ye Zi, we've known each other for so many years; I've always considered you..."
"Considered me what?" I interrupted him with a smirk of sarcasm. "A backup? A tool? Or just a convenient scapegoat when you were playing with Lin Weiwei?"
His face instantly darkened, his breathing becoming rapid. "Ye Zi! How can you think that of me? I've never..."
"Never?" I scoffed. "Chen Mu Yang, ask your conscience. Over the years, how many troubles has Lin Weiwei caused that you had to clean up? How many times did she upset you while you took your frustrations out on me? How many resources that should have been fairly competed for did you give her just because she pouted? Can you honestly say you've never done any of that?"
He opened his mouth but couldn't refute a single word because everything I said was true.
Seeing his guilty and uneasy expression filled me with a sense of vindictive pleasure, but more than that, it was sheer exhaustion.
"Chen Mu Yang," I stood up and gathered my things. "There's nothing more to say between us. I was blind before and misplaced my feelings. Now that I've seen clearly, I don't want any association with someone like you who can't distinguish right from wrong."
"No!" He suddenly stood up, reaching out to grab my arm with a hint of panic and... defiance? "Ye Zi! Let me explain! My relationship with Wei Wei... it's not what you think..."
"Let go." My voice was as cold as ice.
