On the sixth day of the seventh month, it was sunny.
A Liang had a good sleep and then ate some food he brought with him before heading to the hall.
By this time, it was already past noon. After stargazing last night, he returned to his room around one in the morning, which explained why he had gotten up so late today. He noticed that everyone was sitting below, looking listless, as if they hadn’t slept well last night.
“Hey? Where are Xu Renbin and Sun Miaoyan?” A Liang asked.
Wen Ting replied, “They’ve been in their room and haven’t come out. They might still be resting because of the poisoning yesterday.”
“Yeah, Xiao Xin isn’t feeling too well today either. After lunch, she tidied up the table and told us she was going back to her room to rest for a bit,” Rongrong said. “That was around noon.”
“Right, we’ve all been sitting here since eight this morning,” Wang Gang said. “We have no idea what’s happening outside. Ling Song hasn’t returned yet; I wonder how he’s doing. Someone should go check outside.”
“Alright, I’ll go take a look,” A Liang said, stretching lazily as he walked out. “I could use some fresh air anyway.”
When A Liang reached the dining area, he suddenly noticed something and shouted, “Everyone, come quick!” The others hurried over in surprise and found a small note pinned to the wall: It’s now the second turn; those who are poisoned cannot escape death!
Without hesitation, everyone rushed to the second floor of the inn and frantically knocked on Sun Miaoyan and Xu Renbin’s door. Fortunately, upon hearing the knocking, Sun Miaoyan opened the door, looking like she had just woken up.
However, there was no response from Xu Renbin’s side. At that moment, Wang Gang ran upstairs with a hammer and smashed at the door until the lock broke.
They pushed the door open and saw Xu Renbin lying on the floor with a dagger stabbed into his back, next to him lay a piece of garnet. Indeed, the constellation on it matched Xu Renbin’s sign—Scorpio! And from his right pocket, the key to the room was sticking out.
In the deceased's other pocket, there were also some coins, a lighter, and other items.
"Tsk tsk, a swift death, truly ruthless! The blood hasn't even coagulated; it must have happened recently," Liang Xueli remarked as he examined the body, a hint of helplessness in his tone.
A Liang glanced at his watch; it was exactly one o'clock in the afternoon.
"A locked room, an impossible locked room!" Wang Gang murmured. "There’s only one key, and it’s currently in the deceased's pocket. How could that be?"
Indeed, the door was locked, and the only window was also secured.
"This dagger!" Wang Gang suddenly exclaimed. "This is Ling Song's dagger! I've seen him use it! He said it was for self-defense in the wild; the design on the handle is quite distinctive."
"That's right!" Rongrong nodded in agreement. "I saw him take it out yesterday; it's definitely this one."
"This... we can only wait for Ling Song to return to understand," Liang Xueli murmured nearby.
"Well then, let me check the surroundings," A Liang said as he surveyed the floor of the room. Suddenly, he noticed a small coil of fine thread next to the door, along with some wood shavings.
A Liang picked it up, and everyone gathered around. Although the thread was thin, it was remarkably strong and wouldn't break easily. One end of the thread had been cut. The wood shavings were quite ordinary, merely ground down to a fine powder.
Everyone stood at the scene in silence, deep in thought about the sequence of events that led to this moment. After all, a locked room is a challenge for every detective enthusiast; what connection could this fine thread and wood shavings have to the locked room?
Another person had sacrificed their life. If what was written on the note is true, ultimately only one person can leave Survival Island. How will the remaining individuals choose? Will they trust each other? Or will they become suspicious of one another in their quest for that sole chance at survival?
After checking the scene for a while, the keys, coils, and other items found had been examined several times, leaving everyone seemingly puzzled.
Sun Miaoyan suddenly seemed to remember something. "Everyone, it seems we have forgotten an important matter!"
"What is it?" everyone asked in unison.
"Think about it, why did we get poisoned yesterday? It was because our tea was toxic, and Rongrong served us from the same teapot. So either the teacups were poisoned or the rock sugar added later was toxic! Xiao Xin's teacup was chosen by A Liang, so she couldn't possibly be foolish enough to tamper with her own cup. That leaves only the rock sugar as the source of the poison. And why did everyone add sugar? Because we were drinking chrysanthemum tea! This means..."
"This means that Xiao Xin is a key figure! At the very least, we need to find out who made her use the chrysanthemum tea!" Wang Gang added, "How could we be so foolish!"
"Hey? Where's Xiao Xin?" Liang Xueli asked.
Rongrong looked around and said, "I don't know. She went back to her room after lunch and hasn't been seen since!"
"Quick, let's go check!"
