She took the initiative to apologize, saying it was only because she loved me too much and was afraid of losing me. She promised to change, to learn how to trust me. Once again, I softened. I told myself that every marriage goes through a period of adjustment—we would get through it.
Not long after, we renovated a new home, preparing for a fresh start. Yuan Juan seemed genuinely happy. She carefully picked out furniture and decorated every corner. She said, “This is our love nest—we’re going to live happily here for the rest of our lives.”
After we moved in, I naively thought life would get better. But in reality, things were beginning to take a terrifying turn.
Yuan Juan started interfering with my work. One day, a female client came to consult me about her divorce case. Yuan Juan happened to drop by my office to bring me lunch. When she saw the woman sitting across from me, her expression changed instantly. She held back and didn’t explode on the spot—but she did that night.
“Your eyes were practically glued to her chest!” she screamed the moment she walked in the door. “Why the hell was she dressed like that to talk about a case? Don’t tell me you two already have something going on!”
I was dumbfounded. “She came for legal advice on a divorce case! We were discussing legal matters! What are you even talking about?”
“Don’t play dumb! I can tell—she’s clearly after you.” Yuan Juan’s face flushed with anger. “I checked her WeChat Moments. It’s full of selfies. You can tell she’s not a decent woman!”
I was stunned. “You checked her WeChat? How did you even do that?”
“I have my ways,” she sneered. “Don’t think I don’t know the kind of dirty business that goes on between lawyers and their clients!”
The next day, the husband of the woman involved suddenly showed up at my door, saying someone had informed him that his wife and I were having an inappropriate relationship. I felt as if I had fallen into an ice pit; I never expected Yuan Juan to go after her husband like this.
Moreover, Yuan Juan had written an anonymous letter at some point, sending it to the judicial bureau to report me for "improper conduct." As a result, my lawyer's license was delayed for several months, and my workplace began to view me differently. My colleagues started avoiding me, fearing that getting too close would bring them trouble.
"Why would you do this?" I asked her, suppressing my anger. "Do you realize you're ruining my career?"
"I'm protecting our marriage!" she replied defiantly. "Those women are eyeing you, and I won't stand by and do nothing!"
I looked helplessly at the sky, unsure of how this situation would unfold. The following day, I received a call that my mother was ill. Ever since marrying Yuan Juan, my visits to see her had become less frequent; the last time was two months ago. I mentioned to Yuan Juan that I wanted to visit my mother.
She immediately opposed me. "Going again? Didn't you just go a few months ago?"
"Mom isn't well; I need to see her more often," I explained.
"Is your mom more important than me?"
"You're still clinging to your mother after getting married; are you still weaning?"
I could no longer hold back. "That's my mom! How can you say something like that?"
"Yes, your mom is more important than me! Your mom has the final say!" Suddenly, she grabbed a vase from the coffee table and hurled it against the wall. "You two share such a deep bond; you don't need me as an outsider!"
In that moment, I saw a twisted sense of possession in her.
