"Why did you have to verify behind my back?"
The next day, something even stranger happened. A college classmate I hadn't been in touch with for over a decade called me, saying she received an inquiry from a strange woman asking if there was any inappropriate relationship between us.
"I almost died laughing," my classmate said over the phone. "Back in college, you couldn't even talk to girls; how could there be anything inappropriate?"
That night, I tentatively asked Yuan Juan, "Did you take my contact list and call my friends?"
She paused for a moment, then her eyes immediately turned red. "Are you hiding something from me? Why can't I know about your social circle? I just love you so much; I'm afraid of losing you..."
Seeing her tear-streaked face softened my heart. Perhaps she was just too concerned about me. After all, we had both gone through failed marriages, and it was normal for her to feel a bit insecure.
"It's okay, don't cry," I comforted her. "If you have any questions next time, just ask me directly, alright?"
She nodded, like a child who had done something wrong, obediently snuggling into my embrace.
However, in the days that followed, Yuan Juan's controlling nature grew stronger. She began checking my phone every day and monitoring my whereabouts. If I came home ten minutes late, she would call me dozens of times until I answered.
I tolerated all of this until the first day of the Lunar New Year when we had just returned from my mother's house and suddenly received a phone call. It was my college girlfriend, who now lived abroad, calling to wish me a happy new year.
I answered the call and exchanged a few brief pleasantries. After hanging up, Yuan Juan's expression turned terrifying. "Who was that?"
"A college classmate calling to wish me well," I replied honestly.
"A woman?"
"Yeah, what's wrong?"
"You’re lying!"
She screamed hysterically, "I just heard it! That was your ex-girlfriend, right? Are you still in contact with her?"
I was taken aback. "It was just a normal New Year greeting. We haven't been in touch for many years..."
"Bullshit!"
She grabbed a cup from the coffee table and smashed it on the floor. "You definitely still have contact with her! Have you been meeting her behind my back? Do you think I'm not good enough compared to her?"
I had never seen Yuan Juan like this; her eyes were bloodshot, and she looked as if she were possessed.
"Calm down, Juan," I tried to soothe her. "You're overthinking it. She and I really are just..."
"Shut up!" She interrupted me. "If you don't trust me, why do you even want to marry me?"
I was confused by her logic. "What do you mean I don't trust you? It's clearly you who doesn't trust me..."
"Divorce!" she suddenly shouted. "Let's get a divorce! You have another woman in your heart anyway!"
I was completely enraged. "Fine, let's get a divorce! I've had enough!"
As soon as the words left my mouth, I regretted them.
Yuan Juan's reaction was more extreme than I had imagined.
She rushed into the kitchen, grabbed a fruit knife, and pressed it against her wrist. "If you dare mention divorce, I'll show you what death looks like!"
I panicked and rushed forward to snatch the knife away, holding her trembling body tightly. "Don't do this, Juan. I won't mention divorce again; I was wrong..."
She cried in my arms, "You can't leave me, Zhenbin. I can't live without you..."
For the first time, I saw her true self; she was someone who felt extremely insecure emotionally.
In the following days, Yuan Juan seemed like a different person—gentle and considerate to the point of being heart-wrenching.
