Xuan Yang tightly supported Qu Si Yang as they stumbled along the winding, rocky mountain path.
With every step, the sharp stones mercilessly pierced the soles of his feet, causing him to involuntarily gasp in pain.
Yet, despite the unbearable agony, he dared not pause, for the howling mountain wind roared like a wild beast, ruthlessly tearing at their clothes and producing chilling sounds that seemed ready to shred their flimsy garments to pieces at any moment.
Trembling with fear, Xuan Yang glanced back and saw that the once deep and dark cave had completely collapsed, a thick cloud of dust rising like a heavy curtain that obscured it entirely.
From a distance, the collapsed cave resembled the grave of a giant sleeping monster, standing silently and mysteriously as if still recounting the harrowing life-and-death struggle they had just experienced.
"Damn it! If it weren't for Qu Si Yang arriving in time, I would have probably turned into a meat pie by now!"
Recalling the critical moment they had just escaped from, a wave of intense fear surged within Xuan Yang, beads of sweat rolling down his forehead and instantly soaking his clothes.
"Si Yang, really... thank you."
Xuan Yang spoke with a slightly trembling voice that sounded hoarse from exhaustion, filled with gratitude as he addressed Qu Si Yang beside him.
Hearing Xuan Yang's words of thanks, Qu Si Yang gently shook her head. A faint smile, strained and difficult to muster on her already pale face, appeared as she weakly replied, "As long as you're okay..."
As she spoke, her breath grew weaker, and even the bloodstain at the corner of her mouth became more alarming; it was evident that she had also sustained serious injuries.
Looking at this incredibly strong woman who was gravely wounded yet still resilient, Xuan Yang felt an overwhelming sense of guilt and self-blame wash over him.
"It's all my fault for being so useless! If I weren't so incompetent, how could I have caused you to be hurt like this?"
He cursed himself internally while instinctively gripping Qu Si Yang's slightly cold hand tightly. The deep sense of guilt gnawed at his already fragile heart like a venomous snake.
Qu Si Yang gently patted his hand and comforted him, "It's not your fault; that old bastard is just too cunning. Damn it, he can even use earth escape!"
She paused for a moment, her brow furrowed in thought before continuing, "But who exactly is that old man?"
"What is this 'Shadow Puppet' he mentioned?"
A series of questions tangled in her mind like a mess of threads.
Xuan Yang shook his head, bewildered. "I don't know either. Damn it, I'm just as confused right now."
He recalled the old man's frenzied words before he vanished, filling his heart with doubt.
The old man had said that his Shadow Puppet possessed immense power, enough to allow him to dominate the entire village... What could that possibly mean?
Could it be that his Shadow Puppet held secrets he was unaware of?
Xuan Yang felt as though he had fallen into a vast enigma, shrouded in fog that obscured his path.
Just then, a chilling voice echoed behind them like a ghostly whisper: "You can't escape." The voice was like a call from hell, carrying an icy dread.
Xuan Yang and Qu Si Yang were startled, quickly turning around.
They saw a figure cloaked in black, emerging from the darkness like a demon rising from the depths of hell.
The figure was tall, with a pallid face devoid of color, and eyes sharp as an eagle's, exuding a suffocating aura of coldness.
"Who are you?" Xuan Yang asked warily, his body tense and ready for battle.
The cloaked figure let out a chilling laugh, reminiscent of an owl's hoot, sending shivers down their spines. "Who I am is unimportant; what matters is that you will all die!" As soon as he finished speaking, his form vanished from sight, flickering like a phantom.
Xuan Yang and Qu Si Yang were struck with terror and hurriedly stepped back.
However, the cloaked figure moved with incredible speed, like a bolt of black lightning; they had no chance to evade him.
In an instant, the figure appeared before Xuan Yang, brandishing a gleaming blade that flashed like a venomous snake striking directly at Xuan Yang's throat.
Xuan Yang quickly raised his arm to block, and with a sharp clang, a powerful force surged towards him like a mountain collapsing. He was sent flying, crashing heavily to the ground, feeling as if his bones were about to shatter.
The man in black showed no intention of letting up, charging forward like a relentless parasite, unleashing a storm of attacks upon him. The glint of blades and the chilling aura surrounded Xuan Yang as he found himself unable to retaliate, the sound of cracking bones echoed around him, as if he would be torn to shreds at any moment.
Seeing this, Qu Si Yang gritted his teeth against the excruciating pain and rushed forward to help Xuan Yang.
However, the man in black let out a disdainful sneer: “You overestimate yourself!” He swatted at Qu Si Yang with a palm as casually as one would swat a fly. Qu Si Yang was sent flying, blood spewing from his mouth, falling to the ground like a withered butterfly, utterly powerless.
“Si Yang!” Xuan Yang's eyes widened in rage as he cried out, struggling to get back on his feet. Looking at Qu Si Yang lying on the ground, his heart filled with anger and despair. Like a cornered beast, he let out a furious roar: “You will pay for this!” His eyes were bloodshot, burning like flames.
He summoned the remnants of his true energy within him and charged once more at the man in black.
“An ant trying to stop a chariot!” The man in black scoffed, his eyes filled with contempt. He struck at Xuan Yang with ease, as if swatting away a mosquito.
Xuan Yang was once again sent flying, falling helplessly to the ground like a kite with its string cut. His body felt on the verge of collapse, his internal organs burning with excruciating pain.
Yet he refused to give up because he knew he could not fall; he had to protect Qu Si Yang!
Gritting his teeth, he trembled but stood up again, his gaze resolute like a candle about to burn out, emitting its final glow.
At that moment, a mysterious voice suddenly echoed in Xuan Yang's mind: “Kid, do you want to become stronger?” The voice sounded like an ancient call, laced with temptation.
Xuan Yang was taken aback and asked in confusion, “Who are you?”
The voice replied with a hint of mockery: “You’ve forgotten me again; I am Shadow Puppet.”
Xuan Yang's heart jolted; he never expected Shadow Puppet would speak to him directly.
“Do you want to become stronger?” Shadow Puppet asked again, its tone dripping with allure.
Without hesitation, Xuan Yang replied fiercely: “Yes! Damn it, I’ve dreamed of becoming stronger!”
“Good. Then surrender your body to me,” Shadow Puppet commanded firmly.
Xuan Yang did not hesitate for a moment and immediately agreed. He knew this was his only hope!
A powerful force surged into his body in an instant, erupting like a volcano. He felt his body filled with strength, as if he had been possessed by a divine spirit.
His injuries healed instantly, and his true essence returned to its peak state, revitalized like a withered tree coming back to life in spring.
"Is this the power of the Shadow Puppet?" Xuan Yang thought, filled with shock as he felt the torrent of energy within him, as if he had gained control over the heavens and the earth.
He looked at the man in black, a cold smile creeping onto his lips, as chilling as the arrival of death: "Now, it's my turn."
In an instant, he vanished from his original spot, appearing behind the man in black as if teleporting. He swung his fist down like a cannonball, striking fiercely at the man's back.
Caught off guard, the man in black was hit by Xuan Yang's punch and let out a scream, flying backward like a broken sack. He crashed heavily to the ground, struggling to get up but realizing he was gravely injured, powerless like a dying beast.
Xuan Yang seized the advantage and charged forward like a ferocious tiger descending from the mountain, unleashing a storm of attacks on the man in black.
His fists and feet fell like raindrops, each strike carrying overwhelming force. The man in black was unable to fight back, with the sound of cracking bones echoing through the air, as fragile as porcelain on the verge of shattering.
"You're not that brat! Who are you really?" The man in black asked in terror, his eyes filled with fear as if he had seen a messenger from hell.
Xuan Yang sneered, "Have you forgotten who I am so quickly? I am the Puppet Master!
Didn’t you want my power?
Come and take it!"
He delivered a punch to the man's chest with tremendous force, like a heavy hammer striking down.
The man in black let out a cry of agony and collapsed to the ground like a deflated balloon, falling silent.
Xuan Yang walked over to Qu Si Yang and helped her up.
"Si Yang, are you alright?" Xuan Yang asked with concern, his tone filled with tenderness.
Qu Si Yang shook his head and said, "I'm fine, how about you?"
"I'm fine too," Xuan Yang replied, a hint of a relaxed smile appearing on his face.
He looked at Qu Si Yang, his heart filled with tenderness, warm like a spring breeze.
He held Qu Si Yang tightly and vowed, "From now on, I will never let you be harmed again."
Qu Si Yang also embraced Xuan Yang tightly, tears of happiness filling her eyes, radiant like a rainbow after the rain.
The two of them held each other close, as if they were the only ones in the world, everything around them becoming blurred and indistinct.
However, unbeknownst to them, the shadow had not perished.
It lurked in the darkness, coldly watching Xuan Yang and Qu Si Yang like a venomous snake, its eyes filled with vengeful light that burned like flames from hell.
"Puppet Master, wait for me. I will definitely return."
The shadow gritted its teeth as it spoke, its tone laced with deep-seated hatred.
It turned and vanished into the darkness, silent as a ghost, leaving only a chilling laugh echoing through the valley, like a curse from hell that sent shivers down the spine.
