"Hey, I heard there was a serious car accident recently at the corner near the Level Crossing by that Electric Pole!"
"Yeah! I heard it was a drunk driver who crashed and wrecked the whole car."
"Huh? But I heard it was a motorcycle rider trying to dodge a wild dog that suddenly ran out from the side of the road, which caused them to hit the Electric Pole!"
"Oh, come on! That Electric Pole has had its fair share of incidents; this isn't the first or second time. I even heard about an old man who was out for his morning exercise and just collapsed for no reason while passing by!"
"That's strange. It's not like that spot is in a blind spot, and the Electric Pole isn't sticking out into the road or anything. Why is it so easy to hit?"
"Everyone says that Electric Pole is cursed; it's best to be careful when passing by."
As the classmates chatted about current events and gossip, Xiao Li sat quietly in her corner seat, listening.
Since her home was not far from school, she walked every day, and that Electric Pole mentioned by her classmates was right on her daily route.
"Xiao Li, you pass by there every day, right? Have you ever encountered any supernatural events?"
"Uh?" Suddenly called out, Xiao Li was taken aback. "Well..."
She had indeed heard many stories about incidents related to that Electric Pole. Every time she passed by it, she felt a bit uneasy, but since she had never experienced anything particularly strange, she dismissed it as just her imagination.
Until today—
This morning, she walked to school as usual. When she reached the Level Crossing, a tram happened to pass by, and she found herself blocked by the lowered barrier next to it.
The infamous Electric Pole stood directly in front of her across the Level Crossing.
As she stood idly waiting for the tram to pass, her gaze wandered aimlessly until it inadvertently landed on the Electric Pole, where she seemed to catch a glimpse of someone standing nearby.
Huh? Was there someone there just now?
Just as she instinctively tried to take a closer look, the tram suddenly rushed by, blocking her view. Once the tram had passed, she focused ahead, only to find that the area next to the Electric Pole was completely empty.
…She must have been mistaken.
When the barrier lifted, she hesitated for a moment before stepping through the Level Crossing. As she walked past the Electric Pole, she couldn't help but glance at it a few more times, but nothing seemed out of the ordinary.
Yet, there was still an unsettling feeling lingering in her heart.
"Actually, sometimes I vaguely see a figure standing next to that Electric Pole..." Xiao Li said softly.
It was said that speaking out about one's fears could lessen their grip on the heart.
After all, everyone enjoyed sharing ghost stories for fun, and it could also serve as a way to bolster their courage. Why not?
Sure enough, gasps erupted around her immediately.
"Really?"
"No way!"
"Wow, from now on I'm taking a detour; I definitely won't go past there..."
The discussion grew lively as everyone chimed in with their thoughts.
"That can't be true," a calm voice interjected, unhurriedly. "I’ve looked into it before. Although there are frequent accidents there, they usually only result in injuries. No one has actually died, so there shouldn't be any supernatural rumors surrounding it."
Xiao Jing adjusted her glasses and coolly analyzed the situation.
"Come on, Xiao Jing, you're being way too serious! These ghost stories are supposed to be fun because they're absurd and scary!"
"Exactly! Besides, you must be pretty bored to go and verify something like that."
"Well, I pass by there every day, and I don’t want to scare myself for no reason," Xiao Jing replied dismissively.
Xiao Li suddenly remembered that Xiao Jing lived in a different building in the same community as she did and took the same route to school. However, she often overslept and was late, so she had never encountered her on the way.
"…You really haven't seen anything?" Xiao Li asked cautiously.
"No," Xiao Jing replied firmly. "If you saw something, it must have been your imagination."
Although she was met with an unrelenting rebuttal, Xiao Li felt relieved rather than annoyed.
"Is that so? Then that's good..."
