A loud bang echoed through the air, and a thick plume of smoke rose in the distance, with flames lighting up half the sky.
Xuan Yang's heart tightened as he thought to himself, this is bad. A chill ran from his feet to the top of his head. What the hell is going on? Is something else about to happen?
He quickly ran toward the direction of the sound, with Qu Si Yang following closely behind, shouting, "Xuan Yang, wait for me! Wait for me!" Her voice sounded like a cat whose tail had been stepped on.
When they reached the village entrance, Xuan Yang was stunned by the sight before him. Damn! This... this is too terrible!
The large tree at the village entrance, thick enough for several people to hug, had been snapped in half. Wood shavings flew everywhere from the break, and the trunk was charred and still emitting wisps of smoke. Several villagers lay sprawled on the ground, groaning in pain, blood staining the earth and filling the air with a strong metallic scent. Xuan Yang felt his stomach churn violently, nearly throwing up.
Not far away stood a man dressed in black, his face pale, holding a black dagger that glimmered ominously. His eyes were filled with murderous intent, like a beast ready to pounce on its prey. This man seemed like an Evil Spirit risen from hell, sending chills down one’s spine.
"Shadow!" Lu Zhiyuan's voice came from behind them, filled with rage like an enraged lion. "You bastard! How dare you come to our village and wreak havoc!"
Shadow was the leader of a dark force that everyone in the village feared. He wielded powerful shadow abilities and had always been a threat to the village, hanging over them like a sword ready to fall at any moment and take their lives.
"Lu Zhiyuan, long time no see," Shadow sneered, his gaze full of disdain as if he didn't regard Lu Zhiyuan at all. "It seems you're still the same—no progress at all. You're still so weak; it's truly disappointing."
"What do you want, Shadow?" Lu Zhiyuan shouted, veins bulging on his forehead as he clenched his fists tightly.
"What do I want?" Shadow laughed coldly, his tone dripping with mockery and cruelty. "I want to destroy this village and turn it into my territory, making you all my slaves! Hahaha!" His laughter echoed through the silent night sky, sounding particularly grating.
"You wish!" Lu Zhiyuan roared back as a vibrant green vine appeared in his hand, shimmering with tiny lights like a serpent slithering toward Shadow.
Shadow's figure flickered as he moved with astonishing speed, like a bolt of black lightning easily evading the vine's attack. The vine struck the ground with a loud crack, kicking up a cloud of dust.
"Do you think you can stop me with that?" Shadow said dismissively, his tone full of contempt. "You're too naive!"
"Xuan Yang, protect Qu Si Yang," Lu Zhiyuan turned to Xuan Yang and said seriously, concern lacing his voice.
"I got it, Village Chief," Xuan Yang nodded and positioned Qu Si Yang behind him. He could feel her body trembling slightly from fear at the horrific scene before them. He gently patted her shoulder and reassured her, "Don't be afraid; I'm here."
Taking a deep breath, Lu Zhiyuan swung the vine again, now resembling green whips slicing through the air with a howling sound as they charged toward Shadow. This time, his attack was even more fierce and faster than before.
The Shadow let out a cold laugh, wielding a dagger that clashed against the vines, producing a series of metallic clangs and sparks flying in all directions.
Xuan Yang watched the battle unfold before him, filled with anxiety. He knew that Lu Zhiyuan was powerful, but the Shadow was no weakling either. The outcome of this fight was uncertain. He had to find a way to help Lu Zhiyuan; otherwise, the consequences would be dire.
Suddenly, he recalled the ability he had gained in the Shadow Realm: the power to manipulate shadows. A bold idea formed in his mind. He could control these shadows to attack the Shadow.
Taking a deep breath, he focused his mind and sensed the shadows around him. He noticed that there were many shadows surrounding the Shadow, lurking like ghosts in the darkness.
He inhaled deeply again and merged his consciousness with the shadows. He felt himself transform into a shadow, becoming an invisible entity that could freely traverse through the darkness.
He commanded the shadows as if leading an army, directing them toward the Shadow.
The Shadow sensed an attack from behind and quickly turned to defend himself. However, he did not expect that it was the shadows that were attacking him. The shadows surged toward him like a tide, surrounding him completely and leaving him no escape.
Startled, the Shadow swung his dagger in an attempt to disperse the shadows. But they clung to him like leeches, wrapping around him tightly and rendering him immobile.
"What is this?" the Shadow shouted in terror, his voice filled with fear and despair.
"This is my power," Xuan Yang's voice echoed from within the shadows, sounding like a judgment from hell.
The Shadow's fear deepened; he never imagined that this boy he considered useless possessed such formidable strength.
He struggled to break free from the shadows' grip, but it was futile. The shadows tightened around him like giant pythons, constricting him and making it hard to breathe.
"Let me go!" the Shadow cried out in desperation, his voice hoarse like a trapped beast's lament.
"Impossible," Xuan Yang replied coldly, devoid of any compassion in his tone.
The shadows gradually constricted further, enveloping the Shadow's body like a black cocoon.
The Shadow let out a piercing scream as his body began to dissipate, ultimately transforming into a wisp of black smoke that vanished into thin air.
"Shadow!" Lu Zhiyuan exclaimed, unable to believe his eyes. He never expected that Xuan Yang could defeat the Shadow so easily.
He looked at Xuan Yang, his eyes filled with surprise and relief.
"Xuan Yang, you..."
Xuan Yang stepped out from the shadows, his face pale, clearly having expended a great deal of energy.
"Village Chief, I'm fine," he said, his tone calm, though his heart was filled with excitement and pride.
Lu Zhiyuan nodded, feeling a sense of satisfaction. He knew that Xuan Yang had grown. He would become the protector of the village and the only one capable of confronting the Shadow Force.
At that moment, a commotion suddenly erupted in the distance, mixed with shouts and cries.
Xuan Yang and Lu Zhiyuan turned to see a group of villagers rushing towards them, each looking frantic, like ants on a hot pan.
"Village Chief, it's bad!" one villager shouted in panic, breathless. "Something has happened in the village!"
"What happened?" Lu Zhiyuan quickly asked, an ominous feeling rising within him.
"The Ability users in the village have split!"
